A difficult afternoon at The Recreation Ground saw Hoddesdon 4th XI suffer a heavy ten-wicket defeat against St Margaretsbury, but despite the disappointing result there were valuable lessons for one of the youngest sides in the division as they continue their development in the Herts & Essex Border League.

Having comfortably defeated the same opposition by 80 runs earlier in the season, Hoddesdon travelled to Stanstead Abbotts hoping to complete the league double. Instead, they ran into a disciplined bowling display before watching the home side make light work of a modest target without losing a wicket, condemning the visitors to their ninth defeat of the campaign. The result leaves Hoddesdon ninth in Division 4 with 95 points from twelve matches. St Margaretsbury climb to fifth on 130 points, while Harlow Town 3rd XI continue to lead the table on 205 points ahead of Bishop's Stortford 1825's on 190. North Weald remain third with 154 points and Sawbridgeworth occupy fourth on 143, illustrating just how competitive the division continues to be heading into the closing weeks of the season.

The 4th XI Sit Ninth

Although the scoreboard makes for difficult reading, the afternoon should not overshadow the progress this young Hoddesdon side has shown throughout the campaign. Several players are still learning senior cricket, and while Saturday exposed the standards required at this level, it also provided another important chapter in their cricketing education.

After losing the toss, Hoddesdon were asked to bat first on a surface that immediately offered assistance to the St Margaretsbury attack. The hosts made excellent use of the conditions, bowling with impressive accuracy and forcing the visitors into a battle for every run. Captain Nirosh Perera and Arthur Brown attempted to provide a steady foundation but found scoring difficult against some disciplined opening spells. Perera battled hard for 5 from 19 deliveries before falling to Oliver Hurd, while Brown showed admirable patience during a 34-ball stay at the crease before contributing 8 runs. The early wickets left Hoddesdon immediately under pressure and when George Elsom was dismissed without scoring, followed shortly afterwards by Matthew Kent for 4, the visitors were struggling at 29 for 4 with the innings in danger of unravelling. Jack Bailey once again demonstrated his determination despite finding run-scoring difficult. His 7 from 23 balls reflected the testing conditions rather than a lack of application, as St Margaretsbury's bowlers maintained relentless pressure and gave very little away. Lee Ellerbeck departed without troubling the scorers, leaving Connor Taylor with the task of trying to rebuild alongside the middle order. The wicketkeeper contributed a useful 8 runs, striking two boundaries in an innings that briefly hinted at a counter-attack before Toby Fowler claimed another breakthrough.

If Hoddesdon were searching for a positive to emerge from the innings, it came in the shape of Chunot Shah. Batting with confidence and composure while wickets continued to tumble around him, Shah produced the visitors' standout individual performance with an excellent 20 from 28 deliveries. His innings contained four well-struck boundaries and, importantly, demonstrated the positive intent that Hoddesdon had struggled to find for much of the afternoon. While the overall total proved well below par, Shah's contribution showed encouraging maturity and deservedly earned him the accolade of the side's highest run-scorer. Freddie Lee also battled hard for his 6 runs before becoming another victim of Oliver Hurd, while George Viggars remained unbeaten at the close as Hoddesdon were dismissed for 87 in 24.4 overs.

Chunot Shah Top Scored For Hoddesdon

The scorecard also reflected how difficult batting conditions had been. Twenty-nine extras, including twenty-two byes, two leg byes, three wides and two no balls, represented almost one-third of Hoddesdon's final total and underlined how difficult it was for the recognised batters to establish meaningful partnerships. Oliver Hurd proved the chief architect of Hoddesdon's downfall with exceptional figures of 7 for 12 from just 6.4 overs. Supported superbly by Toby Fowler, who returned figures of 1 for 17 from seven overs including three maidens, the home attack rarely allowed the visitors any freedom. Owen Hedge chipped in with 1 for 22 while Monty Leverett also claimed a wicket, completing a thoroughly professional bowling display that ensured St Margaretsbury carried significant momentum into the chase.

Defending just 87 always represented an enormous challenge, but Hoddesdon approached the task with admirable commitment. Andy Viggars opened with a tidy spell that included a maiden and conceded only 24 runs from his four overs, while captain Perera was equally economical, returning excellent figures of 0 for 18 from four overs at just 4.50 runs per over. Jack Bailey continued his all-round contribution with another wholehearted spell, while Freddie Lee also gave everything despite the target rapidly disappearing.

Unfortunately for Hoddesdon, the St Margaretsbury opening pair simply refused to offer an opportunity.

Tim Pedlar anchored the innings calmly with an unbeaten 29, allowing his opening partner Raees Khan to play the more aggressive role. Khan struck an impressive unbeaten 50 from just 45 deliveries, including eight boundaries and two sixes, ensuring the target was reached in just 12.5 overs without the loss of a wicket. The home side's clinical chase inevitably left Hoddesdon frustrated, particularly after the confidence gained from defeating the same opponents so convincingly earlier in the season. Cricket, however, has a habit of producing dramatically different outcomes, and Saturday served as a reminder of how quickly momentum can swing from one fixture to the next.

Valuable Lessons Will Be Learned From Such A Heavy Defeat

Captain Nirosh Perera refused to dwell solely on the result and instead focused on the wider development of his squad.

"Nobody enjoys losing, especially by that margin, and we're all disappointed because we know we're capable of much better than we showed with the bat. We never really built any partnerships, and against a bowling attack that disciplined you're always going to struggle if you keep losing wickets."

Perera was also quick to praise the attitude shown by his young players despite a difficult afternoon.

"It's important that we keep things in perspective. We've got a very young side with players who are still learning what senior cricket is all about. Days like this are tough, but they're also part of becoming better cricketers. We have to take the lessons, keep working hard and come back stronger next week."

The skipper reserved particular praise for Chunot Shah after his determined innings.

"Chunot showed exactly the sort of character we want to see. He stayed positive, played his shots and never stopped competing. There were good signs from several players despite the result, and that's what we'll build on going forward."

There was also encouragement in the discipline shown by Hoddesdon's bowlers despite having such a small total to defend. Perera, Viggars, Bailey and Lee all continued to work hard throughout the chase, never allowing heads to drop despite the inevitability of the result becoming increasingly apparent. Those qualities have become a hallmark of this developing side throughout the season. Results have often been difficult against older, more experienced opposition, but the willingness to keep competing and supporting one another has never been questioned. The challenge now is to transform those experiences into future performances. With several youngsters continuing to gain valuable exposure to senior cricket alongside experienced figures such as Perera, Andy Viggars and Jack Bailey, the foundations remain in place for continued improvement.

Saturday was undoubtedly one to forget from a scoreboard perspective, but it should not define this Hoddesdon team. Heavy defeats are never enjoyable, yet they often provide the clearest lessons, and this young group has shown enough resilience throughout the campaign to suggest they will learn from the experience.

There will be brighter afternoons ahead.
