Defeat was the final outcome for Hoddesdon 4th XI on Saturday afternoon, but there was plenty for captain Nirosh Perera and his developing squad to take encouragement from as North Weald left Thundridge Cricket Club with a seven-wicket victory in Division Four of the Herts and Essex Border League. The visitors chased down Hoddesdon's 134 with seven wickets in hand, reaching 135 for three after 28.1 overs, but the scoreline only told part of the story of another afternoon that highlighted the progress this youthful side continues to make.

Having produced a remarkable run chase against Harlow the previous weekend, Hoddesdon were unable to repeat those heroics with the bat this time around. However, the innings once again demonstrated the importance of experienced players guiding the club's next generation, with Jack Bailey, Lee Ellerbeck and Adam Tackley all making valuable contributions after the home side had found themselves under considerable pressure early on.

The defeat leaves Hoddesdon eighth in the updated Division Four standings with 93 points from 11 matches. North Weald's victory lifts them into third place on 134 points, leapfrogging Sawbridgeworth, while Bishop's Stortford remain clear leaders ahead of Harlow Town. Although the table still makes difficult reading, Hoddesdon remain within touching distance of Dunmow in seventh place and, more importantly, continue to show signs that performances are steadily improving even if results have not always reflected that progress.

Winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Hoddesdon's plan was clear from the outset. Perry Kisby returned to the side to add experience at the top of the order alongside Arthur Brown, with the intention of seeing off the new ball before allowing the middle order to capitalise against an older, softer ball. That strategy initially worked exactly as intended. Kisby looked composed during his appearance back in the side, making a measured three while settling into his innings before Gareth Fuller held onto a catch to give Alex Law the breakthrough. Brown then demonstrated the maturity that has become increasingly evident throughout the season, occupying the crease for 53 deliveries in a patient innings of 10 that blunted the new ball and frustrated North Weald's opening attack.

Unfortunately, Hoddesdon struggled to build momentum once the bowlers changed. George Elsom struck a boundary before falling for four, while captain Perera endured one of those afternoons every batter experiences, dismissed without scoring after facing five deliveries.

Reflecting afterwards, Perera admitted the game turned during that middle phase of the innings.

"Our batting plan was for Perry and Arthur to see off the new ball before the middle order attacked the looser bowling," he explained. "That first part worked well. Perry was great to have back and looked in good touch, while Arthur showed real maturity. Collectively though, we can improve our execution against slower bowling. I certainly had no answer to bowling that made Boris look like Brett Lee!"

At 27 for four, Hoddesdon were in danger of folding cheaply against an increasingly confident North Weald attack. Instead, Bailey and Ellerbeck produced the innings that ultimately gave their side something meaningful to defend. Bailey compiled an excellent 39 from 70 deliveries, striking six boundaries in an innings built on patience and determination rather than risk. He absorbed pressure when wickets were falling around him, allowing the innings to stabilise before Ellerbeck provided the acceleration from the opposite end.

The experienced man blasted 36 from only 29 balls, including five boundaries, changing the complexion of the innings with a positive approach that immediately placed North Weald back under pressure. Their partnership of 74 transformed the contest and dragged Hoddesdon from a position of real difficulty into one where a competitive total suddenly became achievable.

Lee Ellerbeck Gave Hoddesdon Something To Defend

"At 30-odd for four, Jack and Lee rebuilt brilliantly," said Perera. "Jack showed great patience, while Lee's power was a joy for us and a nightmare for the opposition. That partnership was exactly what we needed."

Although both eventually departed in quick succession, Adam Tackley ensured the innings finished positively. The club stalwart struck 16 from 23 deliveries, finding the boundary three times before becoming the final wicket to fall with the score on 134. Connor Taylor added five valuable runs, while Joshua Kent contributed three and Matthew Kent two as Hoddesdon were dismissed after 37.1 overs. North Weald's bowling attack shared the workload effectively throughout the innings. Alex Law proved particularly impressive, returning outstanding figures of two for six from 5.1 overs, while Ben Payne claimed two for 18. Richard Haworth, Vincent Curren and captain Paul Mount each collected a wicket, with the visitors maintaining pressure through disciplined line and length rather than outright pace.

North Weald Won By 7 Wickets

If Hoddesdon's batting innings had been one of recovery, their response with the ball reflected another encouraging step forward. Despite eventually falling short, Perera's attack consistently asked questions of an experienced batting line-up and never allowed North Weald to race away with the contest. Jack Bailey once again led from the front, producing another excellent spell of seven overs that returned figures of one for 25 at an economy rate of just 3.57. His reward came when he trapped Gareth Fuller leg before wicket for two, giving Hoddesdon an early breakthrough after North Weald had reached 36.

George Elsom also struck, with Connor Taylor completing a smart catch behind the stumps to dismiss danger man Vincent Curren for 35 after the opener had occupied the crease for 73 deliveries. Curren's patient knock had provided North Weald with a solid platform, but Hoddesdon's perseverance was rewarded as Elsom removed the visitors' leading batter. Matthew Kent then enjoyed another memorable moment, claiming his wicket with only the second ball of his spell when Taylor again held onto the chance to dismiss Richard Haworth for 46. Haworth's eight boundaries had edged North Weald towards victory, but Kent's breakthrough delayed the inevitable and underlined the youngster's willingness to contribute whenever called upon.

Elsewhere, Arthur Brown bowled an impressively controlled spell of four overs, conceding only 14 runs without reward, while Perera himself produced typically economical figures of none for 12 from four overs. Caleb Harding also continued his encouraging development despite going wicketless, with his six-over spell highlighting the promise that the coaching staff continue to see in the young seamer. The biggest frustration for Hoddesdon came in the extras column. Twenty-seven wides and a no-ball ultimately gifted North Weald almost a quarter of the runs required for victory, a statistic Perera believes offers the clearest area for improvement.

"Our bowling and fielding are improving, with fewer loose balls and mistakes," he reflected. "More consistency is still needed with line and length because that allows us to set more attacking fields. From there it's about turning good into great by taking a special catch, forcing a run-out, developing a variation or finding an extra yard of pace."

Those comments perhaps best summed up the afternoon. There were plenty of encouraging individual displays, but also obvious opportunities for growth that can be addressed on the training ground over the coming weeks. Perera was particularly pleased with the spirit displayed throughout the day, highlighting the support shown by the senior players towards the club's younger cricketers.

"What I'm most proud of is that everyone genuinely looks to support each other," he said. "There were countless moments yesterday. Adam helped me set up the game and guided the youngsters late in the innings, Lee put his arm around Connor when he had a bit of a wobble, Perry encouraged the bowlers throughout. It shows a great togetherness. We relish the good moments but we smile through the tougher ones as one group."

That sense of unity has become one of the defining characteristics of Hoddesdon's 4th XI this season. While results have fluctuated, the commitment to developing younger players alongside experienced club members has never wavered, and Saturday again illustrated why the long-term outlook remains positive.

"If we maintain the balance of senior heads leading from the front with youngsters growing from strength to strength, not only will we continue to challenge during the remaining games this season, but we'll build a superb foundation to really push on next year," Perera added. "I appreciate everyone getting behind what we're trying to do and showing me patience and support. Let's keep at it because there are more great moments for this team on the horizon."

On a day when North Weald deservedly claimed the points to strengthen their promotion challenge, Hoddesdon once again found reasons for optimism. Bailey's resilience, Ellerbeck's counter-attack, Brown's maturity, the guidance provided by Kisby and Tackley, and the continued development of the younger players all pointed towards a side that continues to evolve together. The scorebook will record another defeat, but those inside the Hoddesdon dressing room will know there are foundations being laid that could prove far more valuable in the seasons ahead.
