Arthur Takes First Senior Wicket As 4th XI Trust The Process

Temperatures climbed into the mid-30s as Britain baked under another day of the June heatwave, but despite the scorching conditions at Leventhorpe School, Hoddesdon 4th XI once again demonstrated that this side is about far more than the league table.

The scoreboard will show a nine-wicket defeat to Sawbridgeworth 4th XI, who eased to 78-1 in reply to Hoddesdon's 76-8, but it doesn't tell the full story. It doesn't reflect the willingness of players to answer the call, the youngsters continuing to gain valuable senior experience, or the determination shown by captain Nirosh Perera's side throughout a difficult afternoon against one of Division Four's stronger outfits. Sawbridgeworth's victory lifts them to fourth place in the Herts & Essex Border League Division Four standings on 88 points, while Hoddesdon remain ninth on 64. Yet within the dressing room there remains a clear understanding that this team is being built for the future, with development taking priority alongside results.

Despite Defeat, The 4th XI Continue To Develop

After winning the toss, the home side immediately inserted Hoddesdon on a surface that looked dry, hard and likely to become even quicker under the relentless sunshine. Batting was never going to be straightforward against an experienced attack, but Hoddesdon's willingness to fight was evident from the very first over. Captain Nirosh Perera once again led from the front. While the runs didn't flow freely, his patient 13 from 60 deliveries illustrated the determination required simply to survive against disciplined bowling. His innings became an exercise in resilience rather than strokeplay as wickets fell regularly around him.

Unfortunately, the visitors struggled to establish any meaningful partnerships. Adam Tackley battled hard for his single before falling early. George Elsom showed glimpses of his natural ability with eight runs before becoming one of four victims for opening bowler Ewan Jennings. Jack Bailey endured one of those afternoons every cricketer experiences sooner or later, departing first ball, while young Barnaby Webb suffered similar misfortune when he was bowled off his pads without scoring. Arthur Brown displayed encouraging defensive technique during his stay, making one run before falling to Matthew Kingston-Pack, while Monty McCullagh continued to show promising signs with a composed nine that hinted at the talent developing within Hoddesdon's younger ranks.

Caleb Harding again demonstrated maturity beyond his years. Although his unbeaten three from 43 deliveries may not catch the eye statistically, his determination to remain at the crease in difficult circumstances epitomised the spirit within this developing side. Peter Draisey, continuing to provide invaluable experience both behind the stumps and within the dressing room, added three runs before Amer Khokhar injected some much-needed momentum late in the innings. Khokhar's unbeaten 23 from just 14 balls was comfortably the innings' most fluent contribution. Two boundaries and two maximums lifted Hoddesdon beyond what at one stage threatened to be an even lower total, ensuring they reached 76-8 from their 30 overs.

Sawbridgeworth's bowling attack deserved considerable credit. Jennings produced one of the outstanding spells seen in the division this season, returning extraordinary figures of 4-2 from five overs, while Kingston-Pack claimed 2-5. Louis Shemwell, Isaac Chisnall and Thomas McDonald all maintained relentless pressure as the home side conceded just 76 runs, including only seven wides despite the oppressive conditions.

Sawbridgeworth 4th XI Provided Stiff Opposition

Faced with defending a modest target, Hoddesdon knew they required early breakthroughs to create any realistic opportunity. To their immense credit, they refused to surrender and attacked every ball with real enthusiasm despite the intense afternoon heat. Arthur Brown provided the breakthrough that everyone had been searching for. The young all-rounder removed Sammy Mirams for 34 after the opener had looked increasingly comfortable. It was a thoroughly deserved reward for another player learning his trade against experienced opposition. Unfortunately for Hoddesdon, that proved to be the only success of the innings. Albert Page remained unbeaten on 19 while Thomas McDonald struck an unbeaten eight as Sawbridgeworth reached their target in just 10.5 overs.

Although the margin of defeat appears emphatic, there were positives with the ball. Jack Bailey bowled with excellent pace and rhythm despite six wides inflating his figures, conceding only 15 runs from three overs. Caleb Harding continued his encouraging development with another tidy spell, while Khokhar maintained useful control. Brown's reward for his perseverance was richly deserved, while George Elsom was asked to contribute late in the innings despite the game already slipping away. The statistics perhaps tell a broader story of where Hoddesdon currently find themselves. Twelve wides and two no balls offered Sawbridgeworth additional assistance, while Hoddesdon's own batting innings featured only 61 runs from the bat. These are areas that will undoubtedly improve with experience and more time together.

What continues to stand out, however, is the attitude throughout the squad.

That point was perfectly captured by captain Nirosh Perera in his Sunday morning message to the players, a reflection that perhaps said more about this group than any scorecard ever could.

"Thanks to all who played yesterday, especially those making their first appearance for the 4s this season. It's clear that run scoring is proving difficult for us at the moment, and it's not something we'll fix overnight. All we can do is keep turning up, work hard in training, and improve bit by bit."

Rather than dwelling on another defeat, Perera focused on the bigger picture.

"Regardless of the result, I want to commend everyone's attitude. From those who rushed down from Haileybury to make sure we had a full XI, to those batting in unfamiliar positions and bowling with great energy when the chips were down, the commitment was outstanding."

His praise for Barnaby Webb underlined exactly what the 4th XI represents.

"Despite being unlucky to get bowled off his pads first ball, he dusted himself off, brought great energy in the field, backed the bowlers all afternoon and threw himself around to save runs. It's brilliant to see our young players showing that kind of maturity so early."

Barney Webb

Perhaps the most heartening comments were reserved for Arthur Brown, named Perera's Player of the Week after producing another encouraging all-round display.

"Arthur showed excellent technique with the bat, earning praise from the opposition skipper, before running in to claim his first senior wicket. We love to see it."

Those words perfectly encapsulate what Hoddesdon's 4th XI is trying to achieve. Results matter, but development matters more. Youngsters including Brown, Webb, Harding, Elsom and McCullagh are gaining priceless experience every single Saturday against seasoned club cricketers. Every over bowled, every difficult spell with the bat and every challenging afternoon under relentless sunshine is adding another layer to their cricket education. The presence of experienced players such as Nirosh Perera and Peter Draisey provides the ideal environment for that growth. They understand the importance of creating opportunities for younger players while maintaining standards and competitiveness. There will undoubtedly be easier afternoons ahead than this one. Batting will improve, partnerships will grow and confidence will build. Those improvements rarely happen overnight, but they do happen when players continue turning up, working hard and believing in the process.

As Perera concluded in his message to the squad:

"Losses like the ones we've had recently are never easy to take. But when you see players like Barney, Arthur and Caleb developing week after week, it's a reminder that we're building something bigger than this season. The experience they, and the rest of the 4s, are gaining now set Hoddy up for a bright future."

Captain Nirosh Had Warm Words For His Team On Sunday Morning

On an afternoon when the mercury soared above 30 degrees and Sawbridgeworth collected the league points, Hoddesdon may still have walked away with something equally valuable: another step forward in the development of the club's next generation. If that progress continues at its current rate, brighter scorecards will surely follow.
