4TH XI PREVIEW | Sawbridgeworth CC 4th XI vs Hoddesdon CC 4th XI

Herts & Essex Border League Division Four
Saturday 27th June | Leventhorpe School | 1.00pm

The calendar may still insist it is only June, but anyone stepping onto a cricket field this weekend will feel as though August has arrived several weeks early. Following a week in which temperatures have regularly climbed into the mid-to-high 30s across Hertfordshire and Essex, another blisteringly hot afternoon awaits at Leventhorpe School as Hoddesdon's 4th XI make the journey north to face Sawbridgeworth in Division Four of the Herts & Essex Border League.

With shade likely to be at a premium and hydration every bit as important as batting technique or bowling plans, captain Nirosh Perera knows his young side will face one of their toughest physical examinations of the season. Yet despite recent defeats, there remains a genuine sense of optimism surrounding this developing group. The results may not always reflect the effort being invested, but every week another young player gains valuable senior experience, another partnership begins to develop, and another lesson is learnt that will benefit both Hoddesdon Cricket Club and its future.

That philosophy will once again be tested against a Sawbridgeworth side sitting comfortably three places and five points above Hoddesdon in fifth position. While the hosts have collected 68 points from their opening seven matches, Hoddesdon occupy eighth on 63 points, leaving remarkably little between the two sides despite contrasting campaigns.

Hoddesdon Occupy 8th Place In The HEBL Division 4

For Perera, the focus remains firmly on improvement rather than league position.

"We're building something every week," said the skipper. "Results haven't always gone our way, but we're seeing players improve all the time and that's exactly what this team is about. The younger lads are gaining confidence playing senior cricket and everyone is learning how to compete together."

Recent form perhaps favours the hosts, although neither side arrives overflowing with confidence. Sawbridgeworth were comfortably beaten by Harlow CC 5th XI last weekend, bowled out for 122 after conceding 223 for seven. Before that they shared the points in an abandoned fixture with North Weald, while their last victory came against the league leaders Harlow Town 3rd XI when Harlow were forced to concede the fixture.

Hoddesdon, meanwhile, also come into the contest following defeat against the same Harlow Town side, losing by 209 runs after being set an enormous target of 273. Although the scoreboard looked one-sided, there were plenty of positives hidden within the afternoon, particularly with the ball. Jack Bailey produced the outstanding bowling figures of the campaign, claiming 4 for 69, the best figures by any Hoddesdon bowler this season. George Elsom continued his impressive development with three wickets and a Green Jacket Award, while Freddie Lee and Nirosh also chipped in. Against arguably the strongest batting line-up in the division, there was enough resilience to suggest brighter days lie ahead.

Jack Bailey Grabbed 4 for 69 Last Week

Perera certainly believes so.

"We know we're playing against experienced club cricketers most weeks, but that's exactly how our younger players develop. Nobody hides when things get tough. They keep coming back, keep learning and keep working for each other. That's all I can ask."

The statistics also suggest Saturday could prove considerably closer than league positions might initially indicate. Sawbridgeworth possess one of Division Four's leading wicket-takers in Isaac Chisnall, whose ten wickets have come at an outstanding average of just 9.30. His best figures of 4 for 27 underline the threat he poses with the new ball, and Hoddesdon's batsmen will need to negotiate his opening spell carefully. Alongside him sits Thomas McDonald, another consistent performer with eight wickets at 12.63, while Harrison Weller has chipped in with seven scalps of his own. Collectively they form a disciplined bowling attack capable of exploiting any early scoreboard pressure.

With the bat, Sawbridgeworth's danger man is undoubtedly Craig Chisnall, whose unbeaten century against Stansted remains one of the division's standout innings this summer. Sammy Mirams has twice passed forty already this season, while Gary Barnett and Rob Morgan provide further depth through the middle order.

Sawbridgeworth CC Will Provide A Stern Test

Yet Hoddesdon travel with bowling threats of their own. Jack Bailey now leads the club's wicket charts with nine wickets, while Freddie Lee has quietly collected six despite limited appearances. Ashley Hill's remarkable spell of 4 for 13 remains Hoddesdon 4th xi's best bowling performance of the year, although he plays higher up this weekend, while captain Perera and experienced campaigner Paul Webb have both taken four wickets apiece.

George Elsom's continued improvement deserves particular mention. The young bowler claimed three wickets against Harlow Town, demonstrating increasing confidence every time he takes the ball. Those kind of performances have not gone unnoticed around the club, and another strong afternoon could further cement his growing reputation. Scott Higgins also deserves recognition despite not featuring for Niroah this weekend. His superb figures of 3 for 20 remain among the club's standout bowling displays this season and highlight the healthy competition developing for places.

Runs have perhaps been harder to come by collectively, but there are encouraging signs there too.

Darshana Keerthichandra leads the averages after scoring 128 runs, including an excellent fifty earlier in the campaign. Nikunj Pradhan has reached three figures for the season, while captain Perera's composed 54 remains Hoddesdon's highest individual score of 2026. Jack Bailey has shown his all-round qualities with valuable contributions too.

Saturday also offers another opportunity for several players making encouraging progress.

Adam Tackley comes into the side bringing invaluable experience and another strong family connection within Hoddesdon Cricket Club. While son Charlie represents the club's First XI on the very same afternoon, Adam continues to demonstrate the importance of experienced senior players supporting the club's development pathway. His presence will undoubtedly help guide several younger teammates through another challenging contest. Behind the stumps, Peter Draisey will once again don the wicketkeeping gloves. One of the club's longest-serving cricketers, Peter continues to prove that enthusiasm, reliability and experience remain priceless commodities in club cricket. Younger bowlers know they'll receive encouragement every ball, while his calm presence behind the stumps often settles the entire side.

Monty McCullagh and Seb McCullagh continue their cricketing education at senior level, learning the demands of adult cricket week after week. Connor Taylor will be eager to make further progress with both bat and ball, while Arthur Brown and Caleb Harding represent another exciting generation beginning their senior journeys. Barney Webb continues to develop into an increasingly dependable all-round cricketer, while captain Perera himself leads from the front, balancing his own performances with the responsibility of nurturing so many emerging players.

The Youngest Of The Webb Boys, Barney

It is easy to become preoccupied with league tables during a difficult run, but the broader picture remains encouraging. Many of these players are experiencing their first sustained taste of senior weekend cricket. Every spell bowled in oppressive heat, every difficult catch attempted and every partnership built under pressure represents another step forward in their development. Success for this Hoddesdon side cannot simply be measured in league points; it is measured in confidence gained, skills improved and friendships strengthened.

Perera embraces that challenge wholeheartedly.

"We've got a fantastic group of lads who genuinely enjoy playing together. That's important because development doesn't happen overnight. If we keep competing, keep enjoying our cricket and keep supporting one another, the wins will come. Saturday is another opportunity to show how far we've come."

With temperatures forecast to exceed 35 degrees, fitness, concentration and discipline are needed. Bowling long spells under a relentless sun will test both sides physically, while batting partnerships could become increasingly valuable as fielding teams tire during the afternoon. If Hoddesdon can make early breakthroughs with Bailey and Elsom, restrict Sawbridgeworth's experienced middle order and build meaningful partnerships of their own, there is every reason to believe they can return from Leventhorpe School with a positive result.

Whatever the outcome, another chapter will be written in the continued development of a side determined to invest in its future.
