Youngster George Impresses Despite Defeat

YOUTHFUL HODDY MADE TO PAY, BUT NIROSH INSISTS "THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT"

Hoddesdon CC 4th XI 54 all out (21.5 overs)
Dunmow CC 4th XI 56/2 (8.1 overs)
Dunmow won by 8 wickets

On paper, Hoddesdon 4th XI suffered a heavy defeat at Thundridge on Saturday as Dunmow chased down a modest target of 55 in just 8.1 overs to claim a comfortable eight-wicket victory. Yet despite the result, there remained plenty of reasons for optimism within a young and developing Hoddesdon side that continues to provide opportunities for emerging players while building for the future.

Captain Nirosh Perera's team went into the contest sitting seventh in Division 4 and hoping to continue the encouraging progress shown in recent weeks. The hosts had enjoyed memorable victories over St Margaretsbury and Stansted before the previous weekend's break, and confidence remained high despite a challenging afternoon lying ahead. Unfortunately for Hoddesdon, the toss proved pivotal.

Dunmow skipper Archer Bayford won the toss and elected to bowl first on a surface that offered plenty of assistance for the seamers throughout the day. As Perera later reflected, it was perhaps one of those wickets where batting first immediately became a significant challenge. The hosts found themselves under pressure almost from the outset. Nikunj Pradhan was the first man to depart, caught for a duck after facing eight deliveries as Hoddesdon slipped to 2-1. George Elsom followed shortly afterwards without scoring, trapped leg before wicket by Richard Cross, and when Jack Bailey was also dismissed without troubling the scorers the innings was already in trouble at 7-3.

The wicket continued to offer movement and bounce, making strokeplay extremely difficult. Lee Ellerbeck and Aoylid Hossain both fell without scoring as Archer Bayford ripped through the middle order. The Dunmow bowler produced an outstanding spell, finishing with remarkable figures of 4 for 5 from his five overs, including two maidens. At 9-5, Hoddesdon were staring down the barrel.

What followed, however, summed up much of what this youthful 4th XI is about. Rather than folding completely, captain Perera dug in and showed tremendous determination in difficult circumstances. The skipper occupied the crease for 64 deliveries and battled his way to 19 runs, comfortably the highest individual score of the innings. It was not an innings filled with boundaries or flourish, but it demonstrated resilience, concentration and leadership when his side needed it most. Perera's efforts gave Hoddesdon something to cling to while wickets continued to tumble around him. Young Barney Webb, another player learning his trade in senior cricket, stayed with his captain for a valuable period and contributed a hard-earned single. Luke Mitchell added 3 runs and Chunot Shah chipped in with 1 as Hoddesdon slowly edged towards a total that at least gave their bowlers something to defend.

One of the most notable statistics of the innings was that extras finished as Hoddesdon's highest scorer. Dunmow conceded 29 extras, including 24 wides and five no balls, accounting for more than half of Hoddesdon's final total. While that figure highlighted the difficult batting conditions, it also underlined how desperately the hosts needed partnerships and time at the crease. Veteran Peter Draisey was left unbeaten on 1 at the end of the innings, once again demonstrating his willingness to dig in and battle for the cause. Draisey's value to this side extends well beyond runs and wickets, with the experienced campaigner providing guidance and encouragement to a dressing room packed with developing cricketers.

George Viggars was the final wicket to fall as Hoddesdon were eventually bowled out for 54 in 21.5 overs. While the total was clearly below par, there was still hope that early wickets could create some pressure. That hope quickly became reality. Viggars produced the standout moment of the afternoon for Hoddesdon with an impressive spell that rewarded both his effort and enthusiasm. The youngster removed William Foxton leg before wicket for 16 in the 4th over before also bowling Freddie Reeve for 3 to leave Dunmow wobbling at 29-2. Those breakthroughs were thoroughly deserved by Viggars. Running in with energy and a smile throughout his spell, he finished with figures of 2 for 31 from four overs and provided the biggest positive of the day from a Hoddesdon perspective. While Dunmow ultimately had too much quality and too many runs in hand, Viggars' success offered a small ray of light on an otherwise dark afternoon.

Gareth Howell remained unbeaten on 24 while Liam Twiname finished 8 not out as Dunmow completed the chase at 56-2. Jack Bailey was also impressive with the ball, producing an economical spell of 2 overs, 1 maiden, 2 runs and an economy rate of just 1.00. Aoylid Hossain conceded only five runs from his over, while Perera's opening over cost seven runs.

Despite the disappointing result, there was no sense of panic from the Hoddesdon camp afterwards. Indeed, Perera's message to his players on Sunday morning perfectly encapsulated the culture he has worked hard to create within the side. Rather than focusing solely on the defeat, the captain encouraged players to reflect constructively on their performances and identify areas for improvement. The skipper highlighted batting techniques, strike rotation and bowling consistency as development opportunities while also making sure the positives were recognised. Most notably, he singled out George Viggars for special praise following the youngster's memorable afternoon.

Speaking after the match, Perera remained characteristically upbeat.

"It was a difficult day and the toss played a bigger part than it normally would because of the nature of the pitch. We didn't get enough runs on the board, but the important thing is that the players continue learning and improving. We have a very young side and these experiences are all part of their development."

The captain also paid tribute to Viggars' contribution.

"George was outstanding. He bowled with great intent, showed real character and fully deserved his first senior wickets. Seeing young players come through and enjoy moments like that is one of the most rewarding parts of captaining this team."

Perera also stressed the importance of maintaining perspective.

"We've won some games recently, we've lost this one heavily, but nothing changes. We keep working hard, we keep supporting each other and we keep improving. The future of this side is very bright."

Those sentiments were echoed by Peter Draisey, whose experience stretches back decades at Hoddesdon Cricket Club.

"Results come and go, but what matters is seeing young players gaining experience and developing their skills. We've got some talented youngsters in this group and days like this are all part of learning senior cricket. The attitude in the dressing room remains excellent and that's something we can all be proud of."

While Saturday's defeat was undoubtedly disappointing, the league table provides some important context. Hoddesdon remain seventh in Division 4 on 57 points, still above St Margaretsbury and Harlow 5th XI. They also sit only five points behind Saturday's opponents Dunmow, who occupy sixth place on 62 points. At the top of the table, Harlow Town 3rd XI continue to lead the way on 105 points ahead of Bishop's Stortford 1825s and Stansted 2nd XI.

For Hoddesdon, however, the focus remains far closer to home.

This 4th XI was never assembled solely to chase league positions. Its purpose is equally about developing players, introducing youngsters to senior cricket, creating opportunities and ensuring the club's future remains strong. Saturday may have ended in defeat, but the emergence of George Viggars, the continued leadership of Nirosh Perera, the experience provided by Peter Draisey and the enthusiasm shown throughout the side all served as reminders that success can be measured in more ways than one.

The scoreboard belonged to Dunmow. The long-term future still looks very much in Hoddesdon's favour.
