FOUR-MIDABLE? HODDY LOOK TO TURN HEAT UP ON ST MARGARETSBURY

There will be plenty of reasons to keep an eye on Thundridge Cricket Club this Saturday afternoon as Hoddesdon CC 4th XI return to home soil looking to kickstart their Herts & Essex Border League Division 4 campaign against St Margaretsbury CC.

With temperatures forecast to soar into the high 20s and possibly even brush the 30-degree mark, conditions could be absolutely brutal for anybody stuck in the field for long periods. Sun cream, wide-brim hats and hydration breaks may prove almost as important as batting technique and bowling changes as Nirosh Perera’s side look to turn encouraging signs into valuable league points.

While the table currently shows Hoddesdon sitting eighth after three defeats from three, there remains a strong sense around the group that results have not fully reflected performances so far this season. Against strong opposition in Bishop’s Stortford, Harlow and North Weald, there have been flashes of promise, moments of resilience and plenty of individual contributions to build upon. Saturday now presents another opportunity.

Standing in their way are a St Margaretsbury side currently sixth in the table with 37 points, having won one and lost two of their opening three matches. Their most recent outing saw them post an impressive 213-6 at home to Harlow Town CC 3rd XI before ultimately losing by five wickets. That score alone tells Hoddesdon plenty about the challenge ahead. Neil Lightfoot produced a magnificent unbeaten 111 from 112 balls in that innings, striking 19 boundaries and carrying his bat superbly throughout the innings. Omar Jina also impressed with a fluent 60, while Richard Leggett chipped in with 47 the previous week against Stansted. There is clearly batting depth within the St Margaretsbury ranks and skipper Owen Hedge will arrive at Thundridge believing his side are capable of posting another competitive total.

However, their bowling attack has shown vulnerabilities too.

Despite posting over 200 against Harlow Town, they were unable to defend it, with Owen Hedge taking 3 wickets but conceding at over six an over. Earlier in the season they also leaked 250 against Stansted CC 2nd XI. That balance between dangerous batting and slightly inconsistent bowling makes this feel like a fascinating contest between two sides desperate to climb the Division 4 table.

For Hoddesdon, there is also a real sense of excitement around the selected XI. Captain Nirosh Perera remains upbeat despite the difficult opening few weeks and believes the squad is beginning to settle nicely.

We know results haven’t gone our way yet,” said Perera ahead of Saturday’s game.

But there’s been plenty of positives. The spirit in the side has been brilliant and every week we’re getting stronger availability and stronger balance in the team. The lads are still smiling, still enjoying it and we’re all desperate to put in a big performance together.

Perera also admitted the weather may play a huge role.

It’s going to be seriously hot. You’ll need discipline with the ball and patience with the bat because conditions could get tough very quickly. We want to make Thundridge a difficult place for teams to come.

Opening the batting once again will likely be Paul Webb. Paul’s experience and calmness at the top of the order will be hugely important on what could be a demanding afternoon. Webb remains one of those players capable of settling everybody around him and guiding younger teammates through pressure situations. Also in the side is Nikunj Pradhan, who will be eager to make a big contribution after showing glimpses of promise during the opening fixtures. Hoddesdon know if Pradhan can affect the game, the performance of the entire team could quickly gather momentum.

One of the biggest boosts this week is the return of Ash Hill.

Hill enjoyed a superb season last year and established himself as arguably one of the club’s most improved cricketers. A naturally gifted sportsman and universally popular figure around Lowfield, his return adds real energy to the side. Stylish with the bat and athletic in the field, Hill could be a major player this weekend.

Jack Bailey features again and continues to provide important balance to the XI. Bailey’s versatility remains hugely valuable in 4th XI cricket, while his positive attitude and willingness to contribute in every department make him an important member of the group. Experienced campaigner Mark Feely also keeps his place. Feely’s value to Hoddesdon Cricket Club stretches far beyond the boundary rope through the incredible support provided by David Barney & Company Solicitors, one of the club’s principal sponsors. On the pitch, however, he continues to offer experience, composure and cricket intelligence that younger players can learn from enormously.

Reece Jones returns to Saturday cricket following last weekend’s Sunday Friendly XI appearance against Oakfield. Jones did not get the opportunity to bat in that fixture but did send down four overs and should now arrive nicely loosened up for league action. Hoddesdon will hope he can make an impact with both bat and ball.

George Kimberley takes over wicketkeeping duties this week in the absence of Barney Webb. Kimberley’s enthusiasm behind the stumps will be important, particularly with bowlers trying to maintain standards in difficult hot conditions. Wicketkeepers often become central figures during energy-sapping afternoons and Hoddesdon will be confident he can rise to the occasion.

Sampathreddy Palepu comes into the side after appearing for Dan Hawkins’ 3rd XI last weekend. Still developing his cricket experience, Palepu continues to work hard on his game and has already shown signs of improvement with the bat over the past two seasons. His recent statistics demonstrate gradual progression and Hoddesdon will hope he can continue developing at Thundridge this Saturday.

Captain Nirosh Perera himself remains central to everything the 4th XI are trying to build this year. His positivity, enthusiasm and leadership have remained consistent despite the challenging start and there is little doubt the squad enjoy playing under him. Perera will once again likely have a major role to play with bat and ball. George Elsom retains his place after working hard throughout the opening weeks of the season. Elsom’s commitment and willingness to contribute wherever needed continues to impress and another opportunity now arrives against strong opposition.

Finally comes one of the most eye-catching selections of the weekend.

Scott Higgins enters the side fresh off a superb performance for the 3rd XI last week and arrives carrying an impressive league bowling record overall. Higgins has now claimed 85 career league wickets for Hoddesdon at an economy rate barely above four an over, including outstanding recent seasons in 2024 and 2025. Those numbers are no accident. He remains one of the craftiest and most dependable bowlers available to the club and his arrival massively strengthens the Hoddesdon attack heading into Saturday’s contest.

Perera certainly seemed delighted to have him available.

Scott is a huge addition for us,” the skipper admitted.

You only have to look at his numbers over the years to see what he brings. He’s experienced, clever and always competitive. Having somebody like him around the younger lads is brilliant too.

While league position may currently favour St Margaretsbury, there is little doubt Hoddesdon will believe this fixture represents a genuine chance to get their season moving. The visitors arrive with dangerous batsmen but also vulnerabilities. Hoddesdon arrive without a win but with improving availability, growing belief and a squad packed with character.

And on a scorching afternoon at picturesque Thundridge CC, momentum can change very quickly indeed.
