FOURTH XI RETURN TO THUNDRIDGE LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK AGAINST HARLOW
After a bruising opening-day experience away at Bishop’s Stortford, Hoddesdon CC 4th XI return to familiar surroundings this Saturday as they host Harlow CC 5th XI at the picturesque Thundridge Cricket Club.
With a 1pm start scheduled on what is forecast to be another pleasant spring afternoon, there is already a feeling around the camp that this weekend offers the perfect opportunity for a reset button. Last Saturday’s defeat may have been a difficult one to swallow, but there were valuable lessons learned from facing a talented Bishop’s Stortford side packed with county-standard youngsters and experienced senior heads. The scoreboard may have looked painful, but opening weekends can often throw up surprises — and Hoddesdon will be determined to show their true character this time around.
BACK HOME AT THUNDRIDGE
There is always something special about cricket at Thundridge.
Tucked away amongst the Hertfordshire countryside, the ground has become a popular home for Hoddesdon’s 4th XI in recent years, offering a relaxed atmosphere, excellent hospitality, and a surface that often rewards sensible cricket. For new captain Nirosh Perera, this weekend also represents a chance to settle into leadership on home soil after a tough first outing in charge. Perera remained upbeat despite the heavy loss last week and will no doubt be keen for his side to respond positively rather than dwell on one disappointing afternoon.
The skipper earned widespread respect around the club last season with his reliable performances across the 3rd and 4th XIs, and his calm personality appears well suited to guiding a developing side through the inevitable ups and downs of a long campaign.
FAMILY AFFAIR
One of the standout features of Saturday’s line-up is the involvement of both Barnaby Webb and his father Paul Webb. Young wicketkeeper Barnaby continues his development behind the stumps and will once again don the gloves for Hoddesdon. Still learning the game at senior level, he has already impressed teammates with his enthusiasm, attitude, and willingness to improve. And while many fathers would happily spend their Saturdays simply supporting from the sidelines, Paul Webb remains very much an important player in his own right.
An experienced and respected figure around the side, Paul brings valuable calmness with both bat and ball, and his presence in the dressing room adds leadership and composure to the group. The prospect of father and son sharing the field together is one of the many things that makes grassroots cricket so enjoyable.
There is another family affair in the offing too, as Seb Ringe appears alongside father Stuart. Stuart has been a familiar face around the club in recent years, especially at junior cricket events, training and games, supporting his young son. To see them line up together is another string to the 4th xi bow and we look forward to that dynamic blossoming, much the same as it has for the Webb family. Stuart himself is handy with the bat, although many will recall his younger days when he was one of the best footballers in the area. Transferring that talent to the game of cricket has been a joy to watch and we wish both players well for the weekend, and indeed the season.
HARLOW ARRIVE IN FORM
While Hoddesdon search for their first win of the season, Harlow CC 5th XI arrive with momentum already behind them. The Essex side opened their campaign with victory last weekend, courtesy of a 4 wicket win away to North Weald CC, and currently sit second in the early Division 4 standings, carrying a form guide of LCCCW into Saturday’s contest. Of course, one game into the season means league tables should be taken with a pinch of salt, but Harlow will undoubtedly travel with confidence after getting points on the board immediately. That said, Hoddesdon know they are a far better side than the one that appeared nervy and tentative in patches last week. The challenge now is to transfer that belief onto the pitch.
POSITIVE SIGNS DESPITE OPENING DAY LOSS
It would be easy to focus purely on the result from Farnham, but there were still positives to take. Nikunj Pradhan looked fluent early on with an aggressive 14 at the top of the order, while Reece Jones showed intent during a brief counter-attack lower down the innings.
With another week of training and greater familiarity within the squad, Hoddesdon will hope batting partnerships begin to develop more naturally. The shortened 35-over format used last week also created a frantic tempo that perhaps didn’t suit Hoddesdon’s more measured style. Saturday’s return to standard match rules should allow the side greater opportunity to build innings patiently and settle into the contest properly.
THE TEAM NEWS
Perera once again captains the side, with a mixture of youth, experience, and familiar club faces making up the XI.
The selected team is:
There is a nice balance to the line-up, with several players eager to make a strong impact after quiet opening weekends. The inclusion of both Seb and Stuart Ringe adds additional depth, while Dharshana Keerthichandra and Luke Mitchell will be looking to help strengthen the middle order. Meanwhile, players such as the hugely improved Jack Bailey and Chunot Shah will hope for improved fortunes after facing a tough assignment against an excellent Bishop’s Stortford batting line-up last Saturday.
A BIG CHANCE FOR A RESPONSE
The beauty of cricket is that redemption is never far away.
One poor afternoon does not define a season, particularly in a division where results and momentum can swing dramatically from week to week. For Hoddesdon’s 4th XI, Saturday feels important not because it is a “must win” game — far from it — but because it offers an opportunity to show resilience, togetherness, and improvement. A good performance at home would immediately lift confidence and remind everyone involved what this side is capable of.
SUPPORT ALWAYS WELCOME
As always, spectators are warmly encouraged to come along to Thundridge and support the team. Grassroots cricket thrives on atmosphere, familiar faces around the boundary, and the community spirit that makes Saturdays so enjoyable throughout the summer months.
With the sun expected to shine once again, there are certainly worse ways to spend an afternoon than watching cricket in the Hertfordshire countryside.
THE FINAL WORD
Opening day may not have gone to plan, but there is no sense of panic within the Hoddesdon camp. Instead, there is determination.
Determination to improve. Determination to compete harder. And determination to ensure last week becomes merely an early bump in the road rather than a defining moment. Saturday now presents the perfect opportunity to start building momentum. And back on home turf at Thundridge, Perera’s men will be hoping the second chapter of the season tells a very different story.
