PERERA’S NEW-LOOK FOURTH XI READY FOR OPENING DAY TEST
The long winter nets, the hopeful glances at weather apps, and the quiet hum of anticipation around Lowfield can finally give way to the real thing this Saturday, as Hoddesdon Cricket Club’s 4th XI kick off their 2026 campaign with a trip to face Bishop’s Stortford CC 1825’s XI.
But before anyone blindly heads for Bishop’s Stortford, a quick note for players and supporters alike — this one takes place at Farnham CC, opposite the Three Horseshoes pub in Hazel End. Not quite the usual surroundings, but cricket, as ever, will be the main attraction when the first ball is bowled at 1pm.
A NEW ERA BEGINS
All eyes this weekend will be on new captain Nirosh Perera, who steps into the role after an impressive debut season in Hoddesdon colours in 2025. Having featured across both the 3rd and 4th XI last year, Perera quickly established himself as a reliable and skilful bowler — the kind captains turn to when something needs to happen.
And the numbers back that up.
Across 105 overs last season, Perera claimed 15 wickets, maintaining a tidy economy rate of 4.32. His best figures of 2/29 might not leap off the page at first glance, but those who watched him bowl know his value lies in control, consistency, and the ability to quietly squeeze the life out of opposition innings. He was also handy with the bat at times last season, a top score of 39 against Old Albanian 3rd xi last season a particular highlight.
Now, he takes the reins.
It’s always a significant moment when a player steps up into a leadership role, and Perera’s appointment signals both trust from the club and a fresh direction for the 4th XI. With a mix of experience and youth in the side, his calm, measured approach could prove vital over the coming weeks.
THE OPPOSITION: YOUTHFUL ENERGY
Saturday’s opponents, Bishop’s Stortford 1825’s XI, represent a slightly different challenge.
Effectively the club’s 5th XI, the side is largely made up of talented 15 and 16-year-olds — players at the very start of their senior cricket journeys. It’s a team built on enthusiasm, energy, and developing ability, and one that has asked for the match to be played as a 35-over contest to help maintain engagement and intensity throughout. In a sport that thrives on tradition, that kind of flexibility is refreshing — and Hoddesdon have responded in the right spirit, with Perera agreeing to the adjusted format.
It promises to be a quicker, sharper contest than the standard league fare, with less room for slow starts or recovery phases. Every over will matter, every mistake will be magnified, and momentum could swing rapidly. For Hoddesdon, the key will be striking the right balance: respecting the youthful exuberance of their opponents while applying the experience and game awareness that comes with senior cricket.
THE HODDESDON LINE-UP
While the exact batting order remains under wraps — and rightly so at this stage — the squad itself offers plenty to be excited about.
Perera leads the side, with Barnaby Webb set to take the gloves behind the stumps, bringing reliability and sharp hands to the role. The Webb name features prominently, with Paul Webb and Louis Webb also included — a trio that could prove influential across all departments. With Barney the latest addition from the Webb production line, the dynasty continues apace.
There’s a blend of youth and experience elsewhere too. Jack Bailey and George Elsom offer solidity, while Nikunj Pradhan adds versatility to the side. Reece Jones and Chunot Shah bring energy and enthusiasm, with the latter capable of impacting the game in multiple ways.
Further down the list, Lee Ellerbeck and new signing Ben Marques round off a side that looks well-equipped for the challenges ahead.
Importantly, this is not a side built purely for one-off results — it’s a team designed to develop, compete, and enjoy cricket. The 4th XI has long been a crucial part of the club’s structure, providing opportunities for emerging players and a platform for experienced heads to pass on knowledge.
MORE THAN JUST A MATCH
Opening day of any season is about reconnecting with teammates, shaking off the rust, and rediscovering the rhythm of match day cricket. It’s about the sound of leather on willow, the chatter in the field, and the shared moments that define a season. For the 4th XI, there’s an added layer this year — a new captain, a new dynamic, and a chance to set the tone early. Perera’s leadership will be under the spotlight, but not in a pressurised sense. This is an opportunity — for him and the team — to establish identity, style, and spirit from the very first ball.
TRAVEL & TEAM SPIRIT
With the game taking place at Farnham, logistics come into play as well. Players are asked to arrive by 12:30pm at the latest, giving enough time to prepare properly ahead of the 1pm start. As always, if anyone is in need of a lift, Perera has made it clear he’s happy to coordinate — a small but important detail that reflects the team-first mentality he’s keen to foster. It’s these off-field elements — organisation, communication, and support — that often translate into performances on it.
WHAT TO EXPECT
In a 35-over contest, expect urgency.
Batsmen won’t have the luxury of long settling-in periods, bowlers will need to find their lines quickly, and captains will be forced to think on their feet. Fielding standards will be crucial, and sharpness in the ring could easily make the difference. For Hoddesdon, the aim will be clear: start the season strongly, build confidence, and enjoy the occasion. For Bishop’s Stortford’s young side, it’s a chance to test themselves against senior opposition and continue their development. For everyone involved, it’s the beginning of another cricketing journey.
THE FINAL WORD
There’s something special about the first game of the season. The table is blank, the possibilities are endless, and every player walks onto the field believing this could be their year. For Hoddesdon’s 4th XI, that journey starts at Farnham this Saturday. New captain. Fresh energy. A slightly unusual venue. And a game that promises to be played in the right spirit.
Cricket is back — and it all begins here.
