Hoddesdon CC 3rd XI travel to Enfield CC, Middx 4th XI on Saturday with belief restored, momentum firmly behind them and the Division 12 East promotion picture suddenly looking far more open than it did a few weeks ago. Four straight wins have dragged Louis Webb’s side right back into the conversation, and this weekend’s trip to East Lodge Lane now has the feel of a proper late-season test against one of the strongest sides in the division.

The table tells its own story. Hitchin remain top on 387 points, but they are now being hunted hard by Enfield on 382 and Datchworth on 381, while Potters Bar sit fourth on 354 and Hoddesdon are fifth on 350. That leaves Hoddesdon only four points behind Potters Bar, 31 behind Datchworth, 32 behind Enfield and 37 behind leaders Hitchin, so there is still plenty to play for with the finishing line in sight.

Saturday’s fixtures add another layer of intrigue to an already fascinating title and promotion race. Enfield host Hoddesdon, Datchworth take on Potters Bar, and Hitchin travel to Bayford & Hertford, meaning all of the top five are involved in matches that can directly reshape the table. Hoddesdon arrive in excellent form after a superb run of results that has transformed the mood around the side. They beat Letchworth Garden City by 57 runs, destroyed league leaders Hitchin by 155 runs, edged past Potters Bar by 34 runs and then completed a gritty four-wicket victory away at Hatfield and Crusaders last weekend. The Hatfield win was not always straightforward, but chasing 187 at Newgate Street showed character, depth and composure at a stage of the season when pressure can do strange things to teams. That victory at Hatfield also underlined the importance of Darshana Keerthichandra, known as Dash in the changing room, who produced a superb unbeaten 70 to guide Hoddesdon home. He keeps his place this weekend and deservedly so, having played one of the defining innings of the 3rd XI’s season. In a side where confidence is spreading through the batting order, Dash now looks like a major player in the final push.

The 3rd XI Are On Quite The Run Of Results

Nikunj Pradhan has been another huge figure in Hoddesdon’s revival and will take the gloves this weekend. He has 185 runs for the season at an average of 37.00, including two half-centuries, with his 65 against Hitchin and 59 against Potters Bar both sitting among Hoddesdon’s top five individual innings of the campaign. His keeping role adds another responsibility, but he has already shown the calmness and cricket brain needed to influence games in more than one department. Mark Feely has also enjoyed a fine campaign with the bat and remains Hoddesdon’s leading run scorer with 236 runs. His club-best 51 against Hitchin was a deserved reward for a player who has provided stability, experience and important runs throughout the year. Alongside Louis Webb, Dash, Ash Hill, Reece Jones and others, Feely gives Hoddesdon a batting unit that now looks far more threatening than it did during their mid-season wobble.

Captain Louis Webb remains central to everything Hoddesdon do, both as a leader and as an all-round cricketer. He has 213 runs with the bat and tops the club’s 3rd XI bowling charts with 23 wickets, including that brilliant 5-22 against Potters Bar which earned him his first Green Jacket. His left-arm spin has been one of Hoddesdon’s most reliable weapons all season, and his leadership through the recent winning run has been just as important.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s game, Webb said the squad know exactly what is at stake but are determined not to get carried away. “We have worked really hard to get ourselves back into this position, and now we have to enjoy the challenge rather than fear it,” he said. “Enfield are a very good side and we know that from the first game, but we also know we are playing our best cricket of the season at the right time.”

Webb also praised the attitude shown by the group during the recent run, especially after a difficult spell earlier in the summer. “The best thing for me is that everyone has contributed,” he added. “Nikunj, Touchy, Dash, Reece, Ash, the bowlers, the lads in the field, everyone has had moments, and that is what makes a proper team. We had a tough patch, but nobody disappeared and nobody gave up, and now we are seeing the rewards. The previous meeting with Enfield is still fresh in the memory, and it was a game with a bit of needle at Hertingfordbury back on 27 June.

Enfield made 140 all out after winning the toss and batting, but Hoddesdon were bowled out for 118 in reply, falling 22 runs short in a contest that felt far tighter and sharper than the final margin suggested. Muhammad Fawaz was a major difference-maker that day with 4-12, while David Combe also took 4-30 to help Enfield defend a modest total. Zeeshan Munir gives Enfield further batting strength, with 268 runs at an average of 53.60 and a top score of 113 not out. Rayan Sadek and Thomas Simons have also passed 200 runs for the season, while Junaid Hameed, Seb Liddle and Faheem Syed add depth to a side that has chased confidently in recent weeks.
