HEAT OF THE MOMENT: TITLE CLASH GOES ENFIELD'S WAY AFTER FIERY HERTINGFORDBURY CONTEST

There was no shortage of heat at Hertingfordbury on Saturday afternoon, and not all of it came from the weather.

With temperatures climbing well into the low-to-mid 30s during another extraordinary day of Britain's June heatwave, Hoddesdon 3rd XI and Enfield CC, Middlesex 4th XI served up a fiercely contested Division 12 East encounter that felt every bit like a match between two genuine promotion contenders. The cricket was competitive, the atmosphere intense and, ultimately, it was Enfield who left with the 30 points after securing a hard-earned 22-run victory.

For Hoddesdon, the disappointment of surrendering top spot is softened by the knowledge that they remain firmly in the promotion hunt. Thirteen valuable points ensured Dan Hawkins' side remain third in the table on 187 points, just eight behind the new leaders Hitchin and only eight adrift of Saturday's victorious visitors, who climb into second on 195 points. With plenty of cricket still remaining this summer, there is everything still to play for.

The game itself was an absorbing contest that swung several times before Enfield held their nerve better during the closing stages. Winning the toss on a baking afternoon, Enfield chose to bat first and immediately found themselves facing a disciplined Hoddesdon bowling attack that refused to allow the visitors any early momentum. Scott Higgins once again demonstrated why he has become one of the 3rd XI's most reliable pace bowlers this season. Despite the unforgiving conditions, Higgins produced an outstanding spell of fast bowling, finishing with magnificent figures of 2-12 from his full allocation of eight overs, including three maidens. His relentless accuracy made scoring exceptionally difficult and ensured Enfield never escaped during the opening exchanges. Captain Dan Hawkins also led superbly from the front with the ball. Mixing his pace cleverly, Hawkins claimed 2-16 from 7.4 economical overs, while conceding barely two runs an over. His dismissal of Dineth Hewage late in the innings helped prevent Enfield from accelerating further.

However, the standout bowling performance belonged to wily all-rounder Mick Billson.

Known around Hoddesdon as one of the club's outstanding junior coaches, Billson once again reminded everyone that his playing ability remains every bit as impressive as his coaching credentials. Bowling with intelligence and immaculate control, he ripped through the middle order to claim an excellent 3-16 from six overs, including three maidens. His victims included Enfield captain Tim Cunningham, dangerous middle-order batter Zeeshan Munir and wicketkeeper Seb Liddle, removing three key figures just as the visitors looked to build. Ash Hill also chipped in with two wickets, while Paul Webb dismissed Rayan Sadek to ensure every member of the attack contributed to another disciplined display.

Mick Billson Was Again In Fine Form On Saturday Afternoon

Credit must also go to wicket keeper Joe Robinson who took no less than four catches behind the stumps. It may well have been his superb skill and glove work, it may also have been that his kit hasn't been washed since 2022 and the Enfield batters couldn't maintain their composure, but either way, it was a wonderful display including some stunning catches. Although Enfield eventually posted 140 all out in 39.4 overs, the total felt one that remained well within reach. Thomas Simons top-scored with 29, while Muhammad Fawaz's unbeaten 23 provided valuable late runs, but no batter managed to dominate for any sustained period thanks to Hoddesdon's collective bowling effort.

Captain Dan Hawkins was delighted with the commitment shown by his attack.

"The lads were outstanding with the ball. On a day like that, in those temperatures, to maintain those standards for nearly forty overs took a huge effort. Mick was exceptional, Scott never stopped asking questions and everyone stuck to the plans brilliantly."

Needing 141 to preserve top spot, Hoddesdon's reply never quite found the rhythm they had hoped for.

Enfield's bowling attack, which had already established itself as one of Division 12 East's strongest statistically before arriving at Hertingfordbury, again demonstrated exactly why they are genuine title challengers.Muhammad Fawaz proved particularly destructive, returning outstanding figures of 4-12 from eight miserly overs. Asela Madushanka matched him with 2-12, while David Combe also claimed four wickets despite being slightly more expensive.

Early wickets left Hoddesdon immediately chasing the game.

Paul Webb battled hard for 11 before falling in the fifth over, while Ross Maughan's patient 12 came to an end shortly afterwards. Sampathreddy Palepu made six before becoming another victim of Combe as Enfield tightened their grip. Yet just as the visitors threatened to run away with proceedings, Ashley Hill and Kyle Hay produced a partnership that dragged Hoddesdon right back into contention.

Hill played with positive intent throughout his innings, striking five boundaries and a towering six during an excellent knock of 32 from just 30 deliveries. His willingness to counterattack lifted both the scoreboard and the sizeable home support, briefly shifting momentum back towards the hosts. A ball that kept low ultimately proved his undoing, which was a shame as he looked well set, including an absolutely huge six that sent fielders and spectators alike, scattering. Alongside him, Kyle Hay displayed maturity beyond his years. While Hill supplied much of the aggression, Hay anchored the innings superbly, compiling a composed 30 from 57 balls. His patience allowed Hoddesdon to rebuild after the early setbacks and together the pair added valuable runs that kept the required rate under control. Both players deserved enormous credit for refusing to let the game drift away. Unfortunately for Hoddesdon, Enfield struck at crucial moments.

Ash Hill Looked In Fine Touch With The Bat

Hill departed with the score on 82 before Reece Jones fell soon afterwards without scoring. It was an odd dismissal with Enfield claiming a snick behind but umpire Louis Webb remaining stoic and unfazed. Jones walked away from the stumps to compose himself but Webb took that gesture of an indication of guilt and assumed Jones was heading back to the pavilion. Webb then decided to raise the finger and the Enfield players celebrated. Jones turned to see that he had now been given out and trudged off the field, still adamant he hadn't touched the ball and that he was just 'going for a walk to have a word with himself'. Either way, Jones was gone. Hawkins contributed 11 but became Fawaz's fourth victim, while Louis Webb and Billson both departed in quick succession as the pressure intensified. Joe Robinson fought gamely for his five runs before becoming the ninth wicket, leaving Scott Higgins unbeaten as Hoddesdon were eventually dismissed for 118 in the 35th over.

Jones Dismissal Caused Confusion

The decisive period perhaps arrived midway through the innings when Billson came to the crease.

Having already starred with the ball, the experienced all-rounder found himself at the centre of the afternoon's only sour note. The ball before his dismissal, Enfield launched an enthusiastic appeal for leg before wicket, only for standing umpire Paul Webb to calmly reject the claim. The decision clearly frustrated the visiting captain, whose visible reaction of hands on hips, muttering and shaking his head suggested his disagreement. Moments later, Billson chipped a simple catch into the air.

What followed was disappointing.

The celebrations that greeted the wicket were noticeably over-the-top, culminating in an animated send-off directed towards Billson. In what had, until then, been an excellent, hard-fought and respectful contest between two outstanding cricket teams, the reaction felt unnecessary and somewhat out of keeping with the spirit that had characterised the afternoon. Competitive cricket naturally brings emotion, particularly in matches carrying significant promotion implications, but there is always room for perspective. Fortunately, the incident did little to overshadow what was otherwise an outstanding game between two evenly matched sides and handshakes were offered post match, although perhaps the grip applied, particularly by Billson, was a little stronger than initially required...

Hawkins preferred to focus on his own team's performance afterwards.

"It was always going to be an emotional game because both teams knew what was at stake. We concentrated on ourselves all afternoon and that's what we'll continue doing. Credit to Enfield because they bowled really well when it mattered."

The skipper was particularly pleased with the resilience shown despite defeat.

"Ash and Kyle gave us a real chance. They showed great character after we'd lost early wickets and nearly turned the game back our way. Mick's bowling was absolutely superb and Scott was outstanding again. There are lots of positives to take from the afternoon."

Indeed, despite slipping from first to third, Hoddesdon remain in an exceptionally healthy position. The updated Division 12 East standings show Hitchin moving into top spot on 203 points, Enfield climbing to second with 195, while Hoddesdon sit just eight points further back on 187. The gap is far from insurmountable, particularly given the number of fixtures still remaining throughout July and August. If anything, Saturday reinforced that Hawkins' side belong firmly among the division's elite. They matched one of the strongest teams in the league for long periods, bowled with outstanding discipline and were only denied by several timely breakthroughs from an equally impressive opposition attack.

There will undoubtedly be frustration inside the dressing room after allowing top spot to slip away, but there should also be considerable pride. The bowling unit continues to improve week after week, the younger players continue to mature under pressure and experienced figures such as Paul Webb and Mick Billson continue to provide invaluable leadership alongside captain Hawkins.

Saturday may have belonged to Enfield, but the wider battle for Division 12 East remains very much alive. Congratulations go to Enfield on an excellent victory, and everyone at Hoddesdon Cricket Club wishes them well for the remainder of the campaign. If this contest is anything to go by, there may yet be another chapter between these two outstanding sides before the season reaches its conclusion.
