HEAT IS ON AS HODDY DEFEND SUMMIT AGAINST HIGH-FLYING ENFIELD
The mercury is set to soar once again this weekend, but there will be more than just the weather raising temperatures when Hoddesdon 3rd XI welcome Enfield CC, Middlesex 4th XI to Hertingfordbury on Saturday afternoon.
With Britain gripped by an extraordinary June heatwave that has already seen temperatures push beyond 40°C in parts of the country during the week, players and spectators alike can expect another sweltering afternoon. Forecasts suggest the mercury will still be sitting comfortably in the mid-30s by the time the first ball is delivered at 1pm. If that wasn't enough, the cricket itself promises to be just as hot.
Division 12 East's form sides go head-to-head in what is undoubtedly the standout fixture of the weekend. Hoddesdon begin the day perched proudly at the summit on 174 points after seven matches, just a single point clear of Hitchin's 5th XI and nine ahead of Saturday's visitors Enfield, who arrive in third place on 165 points.

1st Plays 3rd In Division 12 East This Weekend
While there is still plenty of cricket remaining this summer, there is no escaping the significance of a contest that could have major implications in the title race. Momentum certainly favours the home side. Captain Dan Hawkins' men have won five of their seven completed fixtures, with only one defeat blemishing an impressive campaign that has exceeded many pre-season expectations. Last Saturday's nerve-shredding two-wicket victory away to Hatfield & Crusaders underlined the resilience that has become a trademark of this developing side.
Chasing 144 for victory, Hoddesdon found themselves under pressure at several stages before experienced campaigner Paul Webb anchored the innings superbly with a composed half-century. The veteran opener's calmness allowed others to play around him before the visitors eventually crossed the line with three overs remaining to collect another valuable 30-point haul. That result extended Hoddesdon's excellent recent sequence. Before overcoming Hatfield & Crusaders they comfortably dispatched Potters Bar by 53 runs, while their previous completed fixture saw them chase down Letchworth Garden City's total by four wickets. A rain-off against second-placed Hitchin denied them the opportunity to strengthen their grip on top spot further, but the consistency shown throughout the opening two months has firmly established them as genuine promotion contenders.

Paul Webb Scored A Majestic 50 Last Time Out
Enfield, though, arrive with ambitions every bit as serious.
Despite sitting third, their record is remarkably similar to Hoddesdon's. They too have won five of their seven league fixtures, with their only defeat coming in convincing fashion against Potters Bar. Since then they have bounced back impressively, defeating Hatfield & Crusaders by six wickets before edging Preston by four wickets last weekend after dismissing their opponents for just 115.

Enfield's Recent Results
The visitors' statistics reveal exactly why they remain firmly in the title picture.
With the bat, David Combe has been the standout performer. The opener tops Enfield's run-scoring charts with 211 runs at an average of just over 30, including two half-centuries and a highest score of 59. His ability to occupy the crease provides the platform around which the rest of the innings is often built, making an early breakthrough against him a priority for Hoddesdon's attack. Rayan Sadek has also proved a valuable contributor, accumulating 131 runs with an excellent highest score of 55, while Junaid Hameed has chipped in with 155 runs and boasts the visitors' highest strike rate among their leading batters. Antony Freer has already passed fifty once this season and offers further depth in the middle order.
If Enfield possess batting strength, their bowling attack may be even more dangerous.
David Combe has enjoyed an outstanding all-round campaign and currently leads the wicket-taking charts with 14 victims at an exceptional average of just 7.43. His economy rate of 2.12 runs per over illustrates just how difficult he has been to score from, while his best figures of 3-7 demonstrate his ability to dismantle batting line-ups. Supporting him is Rayan Sadek, who has collected 10 wickets, including a superb spell of 4-3 earlier this season, while Vrushank Patel has seven wickets with outstanding best figures of 4-16. Joe Simons and Zeeshan Munir have both claimed five wickets apiece, giving Enfield enviable variety and depth with the ball.

Enfield CC, Middx 4th Xi Come To Town This Weekend
Hoddesdon therefore know they will need another disciplined batting display if they are to preserve their position at the top of Division 12 East. Fortunately for skipper Dan Hawkins, experience and youth continue to blend beautifully within his side. Fresh from his match-winning fifty last weekend, Paul Webb again takes his place near the top of the order. The rangey all rounder continues to prove that class is permanent, combining old-fashioned patience with an ability to frustrate opposition bowlers who simply cannot find a way past his compact technique. Adding another layer to Saturday's story is the presence of son Louis Webb alongside him. The father-and-son partnership has become one of the most enjoyable features of Hoddesdon's campaign, with both players contributing in different ways while sharing the field in club colours. It is another reminder of everything community cricket represents.
Another familiar face returning to the side is the equally evergreen Mick Billson.
Many around the club know Mick for the outstanding work he continues to do developing Hoddesdon's junior cricketers, helping nurture the next generation through the youth ranks. However, anyone assuming his role finishes once the coaching sessions end should think again. Billson remains a more than capable cricketer in his own right, bringing invaluable experience, composure and competitive spirit whenever called upon. His presence strengthens the side considerably, particularly in high-pressure situations such as this.

Behind the stumps, Joe Robinson will take the wicketkeeping gloves. Robinson's safe hands and energetic presence are crucial to Hawkins' side, particularly with the pace attack expected to generate movement even on what could become a dry, hard surface under the blazing sunshine.
Leading that attack is Scott Higgins. The quick has become an increasingly influential member of the 3rd XI this season, consistently asking questions of opposition batters through pace, bounce and relentless accuracy. On a wicket likely to harden further under the extreme temperatures, Higgins could prove a genuine handful with the new ball. Alongside him, Ash Hill adds further quality to the side, while Kyle Hay, Reece Jones and Sampathreddy Palepu provide Hawkins with useful options throughout the innings.
Captain Dan Hawkins believes his side must remain focused despite the growing excitement surrounding their league position.
"It's been a brilliant start from everyone, but we've achieved nothing yet," Hawkins said. "Being top is nice because it reflects how hard the lads have worked, but nobody will be handing us anything. Enfield are there for a reason and they'll come here full of confidence."
The skipper believes adapting to the conditions could be every bit as important as cricketing ability.
"The weather is going to be a huge factor. Mid-30s is tough on everyone, so it'll be about staying switched on for forty overs in the field, looking after ourselves physically and taking our chances when they come. Games like this often come down to small moments."
Hawkins also reserved praise for the balance within his squad.
"We've got youth, we've got experience and we've got players who genuinely enjoy playing together. Paul is in fantastic touch, Louis continues to improve every week, Mick still shows exactly why he's such a respected cricketer and Scotty gives us real energy with the ball. Joe behind the stumps has been excellent too. Everyone has a role to play."

Hawkins Has Real Belief In His Squad
With first against third, two of the division's strongest bowling attacks, plenty of batting talent on show and oppressive summer conditions adding another fascinating subplot, all the ingredients are in place for one of the matches of the season. If Hoddesdon can overcome one of their closest challengers, they will strengthen their grip on top spot and send another statement to the rest of Division 12 East that this talented group are serious promotion contenders. Should Enfield prevail, however, the title race will tighten considerably heading into July.
Either way, spectators at Hertingfordbury look set for a scorching afternoon in every sense of the word.
