Division 12 East Leaders Hit the Road as Hawkins' Men Target Another Big Statement
The race at the top of HPCL Division 12 East is becoming tighter by the week, and Hoddesdon 3rd XI will head into Saturday's trip to Hatfield & Crusaders 3rd XI knowing that every point matters as the season enters a crucial phase.
Dan Hawkins' side make the short journey to Newgate Street sitting proudly at the summit of the table with 144 points, narrowly ahead of Datchworth and Hitchin, who both sit just a single point behind on 143. With margins so fine, there is little room for complacency, but recent performances suggest the green-and-whites are finding form at exactly the right moment. Three wins from their last four completed fixtures have propelled Hoddesdon to the top of the standings, while their hosts arrive looking to halt a difficult run that has left them eighth in the division on 77 points. With temperatures expected to climb into the high twenties, a dry surface likely and plenty riding on the result, all the ingredients are in place for another fascinating afternoon of village cricket.
Hawkins: "We've Earned Our Position"
Captain Dan Hawkins has been delighted with the way his side has responded after a mixed start to the campaign.
After defeat against Datchworth earlier in the season, Hoddesdon have shown impressive resilience, collecting victories over Bayford, Preston, Letchworth Garden City and Potters Bar to establish themselves as genuine promotion contenders. Speaking ahead of the match, Hawkins was keen to stress that the hard work must continue.
"We've put ourselves in a really good position, but nobody is getting carried away. The league is incredibly tight and we've seen already this season that anybody can beat anybody on their day. What has pleased me most is the way different players have stepped up each week. One week it's the bowlers, the next week it's somebody digging in with the bat. That's the sign of a good team. Hatfield & Crusaders will be looking at us as the team at the top of the league and they'll want to make a statement. We need to be professional, stick to our plans and make sure we earn every point."

Form Guide
Hoddesdon arrive in excellent spirits following their convincing 53-run victory over Potters Bar 4th XI last Saturday. After posting 143 all out from their 40 overs, the bowlers took centre stage, dismissing Potters Bar for just 90. It was another example of the discipline and consistency that has become a trademark of this Hoddesdon side. Before that came a four-wicket victory at Letchworth Garden City and a dramatic four-wicket win over Preston, while the fixture against Hitchin was washed out.
Hatfield & Crusaders have endured a much more difficult recent spell.
Their last completed fixture saw them bowled out for 82 before Enfield chased the target with six wickets to spare. Prior to that they suffered a heartbreaking two-run defeat against Hitchin after scoring 217 and were beaten by Letchworth Garden City by 31 runs. While results have not gone their way, there are signs that Hatfield possess enough quality to be dangerous if Hoddesdon take their eye off the ball.
The League Table
Saturday's fixture sees first place travel to eighth.
Division 12 East
The picture could hardly be tighter at the top. A victory for Hoddesdon would guarantee they remain leaders regardless of other results, while any slip-up could see the chasing pack leapfrog them.

Hoddesdon's Key Men
The statistics show exactly why Hoddesdon have climbed to the summit.
Leading the bowling charts is Benjamin Strong, whose remarkable return of 11 wickets at an average of just 7.82 remains among the best records in the division. His sensational 7-22 against Preston remains the standout individual bowling performance of Hoddesdon's season so far. Louis Webb continues to provide control and wickets in equal measure. Nine wickets at 12.11 and an economy rate barely above three runs per over make him one of the division's most dependable performers. Captain Hawkins himself has contributed eight wickets while maintaining a miserly economy rate of 2.31, while Scott Higgins has quietly become one of the most effective bowlers in the side. His six wickets have come at an astonishing average of just 5.50.
With Strong unavailable this weekend, responsibility will again fall on Hawkins, Webb and Higgins to lead the attack. That said, Austin Bean returns to the side this weekend and he too is capable of damaging any batting line up. Two wickets away to Letchworth on the 30th of May was a vivid reminder of his class with ball in hand and Hawkins will be hoping the youngster can replicate that kind of form.

Pace Bowler Scott Higgins
With the bat, Freddie Hawkins currently tops the run-scoring charts with 64 runs at an average of 32. Although those numbers do not leap off the page, they underline how this side has relied on contributions throughout the order rather than one dominant batter. Reece Jones has impressed with 49 runs and a strike rate exceeding 90, while Louis Webb has chipped in with valuable lower-order runs. Last weekend's stars Mark Feely and Reece Jones will also be eager to build on encouraging performances against Potters Bar, where Feely top-scored with 38 and Jones added 34.

The Hatfield Threat
Despite their league position, Hatfield & Crusaders possess several players capable of changing a game. At the top of the list is Nikhil Jonnalagadda. His 159 runs from just three innings include scores of 81 not out and 56, giving him a remarkable average of 79.50. He has scored almost twice as many runs as any of his teammates and is clearly the wicket Hoddesdon will want most. Barry Phillips is another player Hawkins' bowlers will need to keep quiet. He has scored 84 runs and boasts a highest score of 70.
With the ball, Tony Jakes has been exceptional. His figures of 6-17 against Preston represent the best bowling performance produced by Hatfield this season. Six wickets from only 7.2 overs at an average of 2.83 make him their standout bowler statistically. Omkar Gandhi and Arjun Mettu have also taken three wickets apiece and have maintained economical figures throughout the campaign. If Hatfield are to upset the league leaders, it is likely that Jonnalagadda with the bat and Jakes with the ball will be central to their hopes.

Dan Hawkins has named the following XI for the trip to Newgate Street:
1. Dan Hawkins (Captain)

2. Paul Webb
An experienced campaigner who brings calmness and know-how to the top order.
3. Ross Maughan
Always competitive and capable of influencing matches with his aggressive approach and tactical nous.
4. Mark Feely
Fresh from a top score of 38 against Potters Bar and looking increasingly comfortable in the middle order.
5. Tyler Burroughs
An energetic all-round cricketer who offers flexibility in both disciplines. A livewire with the bat on his day.
6. Sampathreddy Palepu
A valuable contributor who adds depth to the batting line-up and useful overs if required.
7. Austin Bean
Talented bowler who continues to gain valuable senior cricket experience.
8. Rudy Bean

11. Scott Higgins

Conditions Could Play a Major Role. With temperatures forecast to reach the high twenties throughout Saturday afternoon, fitness and concentration could become significant factors. The outfield is expected to be quick, boundaries should be plentiful and batting conditions could improve as the day progresses. Winning the toss may prove particularly important. Hawkins will undoubtedly weigh up whether to take advantage of fresh conditions with the ball or back his side's batting depth to set a challenging total. Either way, patience and discipline are likely to be rewarded.

Saturday's Venue, Newgate Street Village Hall
Final Word
This is exactly the sort of fixture promotion-chasing teams must negotiate successfully. Hatfield & Crusaders have struggled for consistency and sit eighth in the table, but village cricket has a habit of punishing complacency. Hoddesdon will know they must produce another professional performance if they are to return home with maximum points. The visitors arrive as league leaders, boasting superior form, stronger statistics and growing confidence. However, with Jonnalagadda's batting and Jakes' bowling providing genuine threats, Hawkins' men cannot afford to underestimate their opponents. If Hoddesdon can reproduce the disciplined bowling and determined batting that has carried them to the top of Division 12 East, they will fancy their chances of strengthening their grip on first place.
