FEELY GOOD FACTOR AS HODDY STAY TOP OF THE TREE
Potters Bar CC 4th XI 90 all out (28.3 overs) lost to Hoddesdon CC Saturday 3rd XI 143 all out (40 overs) by 53 runs
Hoddesdon CC Saturday 3rd XI strengthened their grip on top spot in HPCL Division 12 East with a convincing 53-run victory away at Potters Bar CC 4th XI on a warm Saturday afternoon at Dame Alice Owen School. In a match that featured disciplined batting, aggressive middle-order strokeplay and some outstanding bowling performances, Dan Hawkins' side once again demonstrated why they sit at the summit of the division. The victory earned Hoddesdon a full 30 points and moved them onto 144 points, one clear of both Datchworth and Hitchin, keeping the promotion race firmly in their own hands.
While the scorebook will show a comfortable win, it was built on two foundations. Firstly, the determined batting efforts of Mark Feely and Reece Jones, who rescued Hoddesdon from early trouble. Secondly, the devastating bowling spells produced by vice-captain Louis Webb and Scott Higgins, who dismantled the Potters Bar batting line-up with ruthless efficiency.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Hoddesdon knew they would need to work hard against a Potters Bar attack that had enjoyed success earlier in the season. Unfortunately for the visitors, the innings got off to a difficult start. Paul Webb battled hard for his 7 from 26 deliveries but was caught off the bowling of Leo Tyler with the score on 8. Ross Maughan followed shortly afterwards for 3, leaving Hoddesdon under pressure at 23 for 2. Captain Dan Hawkins joined Mark Feely and attempted to steady the innings. Hawkins showed typical determination, occupying the crease for 31 deliveries and striking two boundaries during his innings of 15. However, when he became the third wicket to fall at 30, Potters Bar sensed an opportunity and when Tyler Burroughs departed for 1 with the score on 37 for 4, the hosts were firmly on top. At that stage, Hoddesdon needed a partnership and they received exactly that.
Mark Feely and Reece Jones produced the defining batting stand of the match, combining composure with calculated aggression to completely alter the direction of the contest. Feely played the senior role beautifully, absorbing pressure and rotating the strike, while Jones launched a fearless counter-attack that shifted momentum decisively towards the visitors. The pair added 68 runs for the fifth wicket, taking Hoddesdon from a precarious 37 for 4 to a much healthier 105 for 5. Feely's innings of 38 from 72 deliveries may not have been the fastest knock of the afternoon, but it was arguably the most important. His innings included three boundaries and three towering sixes, providing stability when his side needed it most.
At the other end, Jones played one of the most explosive innings of the season. His 34 came from just 26 deliveries and included four boundaries and two maximums. With a strike rate of over 130, he transformed the atmosphere around the ground and put Potters Bar firmly on the back foot. The partnership was recognised in the match highlights, with Hoddesdon reaching 50 in 17.4 overs before accelerating rapidly towards three figures. By the time the score reached 100 in the 28th over, the visitors had seized complete control. Although Jones was dismissed at 105 and Feely followed immediately afterwards without another run being added, the damage had been done.

Reece Jones and Mark Feely's Partnership Steered Hoddesdon Home
The lower order then ensured the momentum was not wasted. Amer Khokhar battled for 3 from 19 balls, while Louis Webb contributed a valuable 11. Joe Robinson added 12 and Sampathreddy Palepu chipped in with 4 before Scott Higgins remained unbeaten on 2. Extras also played their part, contributing 13 runs to the total. When the final wicket fell with the last ball of the innings, Hoddesdon had reached 143 all out from their allotted 40 overs. It was not a huge score, but on a surface offering assistance to the bowlers, it felt competitive.
As it transpired, it proved far more than competitive. If the batting innings had been built around Feely and Jones, the bowling reply belonged emphatically to Louis Webb and Scott Higgins.
Potters Bar's chase began disastrously.
Louis Webb immediately found his rhythm and struck with the very first over of the innings, removing Niloy Mitra for a duck after Joe Robinson completed the catch behind the stumps. Aarav Dave followed for 5 and Finlay Armstrong was dismissed for just 1, both falling to Webb as Hoddesdon tore through the top order. At 7 for 3, Potters Bar were already in deep trouble. The pressure intensified when Paul Webb produced a sharp run out to remove the dangerous Kenny Horsman for a duck. Given Horsman's reputation as one of Potters Bar's key batters, his early departure represented a huge moment in the match.
Dan Hawkins then joined the act, trapping Nathanial Faldo for 6 to leave the home side reeling at 14 for 5. Louis Webb continued to bowl with remarkable control. Mixing accuracy with subtle movement, he claimed the wicket of Tuhin Mitra for 8 and finished with magnificent figures of 4 for 17 from eight overs, including a maiden. His economy rate of just 2.13 told its own story. Every over increased the pressure on the hosts, and every dot ball pushed them closer towards collapse. Despite the carnage, Potters Bar did show some resistance through Yogeshkumar Patel and Leo Tyler. Patel battled for 17 from 35 deliveries before becoming Paul Webb's second wicket, while Tyler remained unbeaten throughout the innings for 27 from 50 balls. Their efforts briefly slowed Hoddesdon's charge, but the visitors never relinquished control.
Scott Higgins then delivered the decisive blows. Bowling with pace, discipline and aggression, Higgins ripped through the lower order to finish with superb figures of 3 for 15 from 6.3 overs. Amrish Dave fell for 11, Vaibhav Gohil managed only 4 and Shrut Patel was dismissed first ball as Higgins wrapped up the innings. His spell included a maiden and an economy rate of just 2.31, underlining just how dominant he was. Supporting performances came from throughout the attack. Daniel Hawkins returned figures of 1 for 14 from six overs, while Paul Webb's 1 for 36 included the key wicket of Yogeshkumar Patel. Amer Khokhar also contributed a tidy over.

Louis Webb and Scott Higgins Tore Through The Potters Bar Batting Line Up
The fielding matched the quality of the bowling. Robinson claimed an important catch behind the stumps, Tyler Burroughs held a sharp chance and Ross Maughan joined the catching list. Paul Webb's run out of Horsman proved one of the turning points of the afternoon. Potters Bar eventually folded for 90 in just 28.3 overs, handing Hoddesdon a comprehensive 53-run victory.
The result leaves the Saturday 3rd XI proudly occupying top spot in Division 12 East after six matches. Their total of 144 points places them one point ahead of Datchworth and Hitchin in what is developing into a fascinating three-way battle for promotion. With four victories from six matches and valuable bowling bonus points accumulated throughout the campaign, Hawkins' side continue to find different ways to win cricket matches.

Division 12 East Table
Afterwards, captain Dan Hawkins praised the collective effort.
"This was a really professional performance. We knew 143 wasn't an enormous total, so we spoke during the break about bowling disciplined lines and making Potters Bar earn every run. The lads did exactly that. Mark and Reece completely changed the game with the bat. At 37 for 4 we were under pressure, but they showed character and took the game back. Then Louis and Scott were exceptional with the ball. They set the tone from the first over and never let Potters Bar settle."
Vice-captain Louis Webb was equally delighted with the result.
"Everyone contributed. That's what pleased me most. The scorecard highlights a few performances, but every player played their part. Mark and Reece got us to a defendable total, Joe kept brilliantly, the catches were taken and the bowlers worked together as a unit. We're enjoying being top of the table, but we're not getting carried away. The league is incredibly tight and we know there is still a long way to go. What this group has shown is that when we work hard for each other, we're a difficult side to beat."
On a warm afternoon in Potters Bar, Hoddesdon once again demonstrated the qualities of promotion contenders. Feely and Jones provided the recovery act, Webb and Higgins delivered the knockout punches, and a united team performance ensured the green-and-whites returned home with another priceless victory and their place at the top of Division 12 East firmly intact.
A title tilt may yet be in the offing for Dan and his 3rd XI.
