HAWK-EYE ON THE PRIZE AS HODDESDON HEAD TO POTTERS BAR
Division 12 East leaders return to action after rain frustration with Hawkins back at the helm
There was a sense of frustration around Hertingfordbury last Saturday afternoon as the rain tumbled down and another promising fixture disappeared beneath the clouds. Hoddesdon CC Saturday 3rd XI had been preparing for a heavyweight clash with Hitchin CC 5th XI, a game that carried significant implications in the Division 12 East title race, only for the weather to have the final say. While nobody enjoys losing a Saturday to the elements, the enforced break may yet prove to be a blessing in disguise for Dan Hawkins and his table-topping side.
After several weeks of intense cricket, the opportunity to recharge batteries, rest tired limbs and reset mentally could arrive at exactly the right moment. The timing is particularly welcome given the challenge that awaits this weekend. Hoddesdon make the trip to Dame Alice Owen School to face Potters Bar CC 4th XI, knowing victory would strengthen their grip on top spot and maintain the momentum that has carried them to the summit of the division during an excellent opening half of the campaign. The title race remains incredibly tight. Hoddesdon currently sit top of Division 12 East with 114 points, but there is virtually no margin for error. Datchworth CC 3rd XI and Hitchin CC 5th XI are both breathing down their necks on 113 points, while Enfield CC 4th XI remain within touching distance on 105. One defeat or one poor performance can completely alter the complexion of the table, making every fixture increasingly important as the season develops.
That league table underlines just how impressive Hoddesdon's recent form has been. The last three completed league fixtures have yielded three victories. First came a comfortable six-wicket win away at Bayford & Hertford. Then came perhaps the most dramatic success of the season, a thrilling four-wicket victory over Preston where Hoddesdon held their nerve superbly. Their most recent completed fixture saw another four-wicket triumph away at Letchworth Garden City, a result that demonstrated once again the resilience running throughout this side. Those victories have not all followed the same script, which is perhaps the most encouraging aspect for Hawkins and his leadership group. Some weeks the bowlers have dominated proceedings. Other weeks the batting unit has shown composure under pressure to guide the side home. Different players have stepped forward at different times, creating a squad that looks increasingly balanced and difficult to stop.
Potters Bar arrive in a somewhat different position. They currently occupy seventh place with 82 points, but the league table can sometimes be misleading. This is a side capable of producing strong performances, particularly on their own ground, and Hoddesdon will know they cannot afford to underestimate them. Potters Bar's recent results illustrate their unpredictability. They defeated Hitchin by eight runs in an impressive display but have also suffered defeats against Enfield and Letchworth Garden City. Like Hoddesdon, their fixture last weekend was washed out, meaning both sides enter Saturday's contest after an unexpected week off. The weather forecast suggests a far more enjoyable afternoon awaits this time around. Temperatures are expected to climb into the low twenties, with sunshine forecast throughout much of the day. After a week of battling damp conditions and watching rain clouds dominate the horizon, players on both sides will be hoping for a firm pitch, a fast outfield and a proper game of cricket.
For Hoddesdon, the return of captain Dan Hawkins is a significant boost. The skipper remains one of the division's most effective captains and continues to lead from the front whenever he takes the field. Hawkins has already claimed seven wickets this season while maintaining a remarkable economy rate of just 2.30. In thirty overs of bowling he has conceded only 69 runs, repeatedly strangling opposition scoring rates and creating pressure that allows wickets to fall at the other end.
Looking ahead to Saturday, Hawkins is confident his side can continue their strong form.
"The rain was frustrating because everybody was looking forward to the Hitchin game, but sometimes a week off isn't the worst thing in the world. A few lads have had the chance to recover, spend some time away from cricket and come back fresh. We've trained well, spirits are good and we're excited to get back out there."
"The table is obviously very tight and we know every game matters. Potters Bar have some good players and they'll fancy their chances at home, so we need to be switched on from the start. If we do the basics well and play our cricket, we've shown already this season that we're capable of beating anybody in this division."
Supporting Hawkins once again will be vice-captain Louis Webb, who had been preparing to step into the leadership role last weekend before the weather intervened. Webb has enjoyed an excellent campaign and remains one of the most influential all-rounders in the squad. His contribution against Preston was particularly memorable, sharing a magnificent 130-run partnership with Bilal Ahmad that transformed the game and ultimately secured victory for Hoddesdon. That stand remains the highest partnership recorded by the side this season and serves as a reminder of the quality Webb possesses when he settles at the crease.
"We've built some really good momentum this season and everyone wants to keep that going," said Webb. "The week off gave people a chance to freshen up, but now we're desperate to get back out there. Potters Bar have picked up some good results and they'll be tough opponents, but we've got a lot of confidence in the dressing room."
One of the most popular selections this weekend is undoubtedly Paul Webb. Over recent weeks Paul has been helping Nirosh Perera's 4th XI, where he has also enjoyed the opportunity to play alongside son Barney. Those appearances have provided some wonderful family memories and have been warmly received throughout the club. This weekend, however, sees him return to the 3rd XI setup, bringing with him a wealth of experience and an invaluable cricketing brain.
"Playing alongside Barney has been brilliant and something I'll continue to treasure," said Paul. "I've really enjoyed playing for the 4th XI, but it's good to be back with the 3rd XI as well. We've got a talented group and hopefully we can continue what has been a really positive season."

Another important return comes in the shape of Scott Higgins. The pace bowler has already demonstrated his ability to influence games and offers Hoddesdon genuine wicket-taking threat. His figures of 3 for 18 against Bayford & Hertford remain among the best bowling performances by any Hoddesdon player this season. With sunshine forecast and a dry surface expected at Potters Bar, Higgins could become a major factor both with the new ball and during the middle overs.

While Higgins brings pace, Benjamin Strong continues to lead the attack statistically. Although not available this weekend, his influence on the season remains enormous. Strong's remarkable 7 for 22 against Preston is still the standout bowling performance produced by any Hoddesdon player in 2026. Overall he has claimed eleven wickets at an average of just 7.82, helping to establish the bowling standards that the rest of the squad have followed. On that form, he will be missed this weekend.
Experience will also arrive in abundance through Ross Maughan and Mark Feely. Maughan remains one of the club's most respected cricketers and continues to provide a calming influence both on and off the field. Few players understand momentum swings and pressure situations quite like Ross, making his presence invaluable in tight matches.
"It's a good dressing room at the moment," said Maughan. "There's a nice blend of youth and experience, and people are enjoying their cricket. We know there is still a long way to go in the season but we're in a strong position. The challenge now is maintaining those standards week after week."
Feely, meanwhile, returns fresh from captaining the President's XI against the Hoddesdon 1st XI on Sunday. Although the President's XI eventually came up short, the game proved highly competitive and provided valuable cricket for everyone involved. Feely's leadership was widely praised and he now brings that experience back into the 3rd XI fold.
"President's Day was a fantastic occasion and the game was played in exactly the right spirit," said Feely. "Now the focus switches back to league cricket. We've got a very good side travelling to Potters Bar and hopefully we can produce another performance that keeps us right where we want to be."

Potters Bar possess their own dangers. Kenny Horsman is clearly their biggest batting threat after producing an excellent 84 against Preston. Neeraj Mithal has also demonstrated his ability with a score of 64 against Hitchin, while Ansh Mithal contributed 36 in the same innings. Together they helped guide Potters Bar to 172 for 7 in what remains their best batting performance of the campaign.
With the ball, Chan Basha Shaik leads their wicket charts with three wickets at an average of eleven. Alex Bhowmik has also claimed three wickets while maintaining an impressive economy rate of 2.30, while Tuhin Mitra has chipped in with three wickets of his own. They may not possess huge wicket tallies, but their ability to keep scoring under control means Hoddesdon's batters cannot afford any lapses in concentration.
The inclusion of Tyler Burroughs is another reason for optimism within the Hoddesdon camp. Burroughs remains one of the most naturally destructive players in the squad and, when he finds rhythm, can score quickly enough to completely alter the course of a match. Potters Bar will undoubtedly have done their homework, but containing Tyler once he gets going is often easier said than done. Joe Robinson will once again take the gloves and continue his important role behind the stumps, while Amer Khokhar, Reece Jones and Sampathreddy Palepu complete a well-balanced eleven that possesses strength throughout.
Hoddesdon CC Saturday 3rd XI
As Saturday approaches, there is a feeling that this fixture could prove another significant marker in Hoddesdon's season. The rain may have temporarily halted their momentum, but it has done nothing to diminish their position at the top of the table. With experienced players returning, confidence high throughout the squad and warm sunshine forecast across Hertfordshire, the conditions appear perfect for another entertaining afternoon of cricket. Potters Bar will undoubtedly provide a stern examination on their own patch, but Hoddesdon arrive with good reason to believe. They sit top of the division for a reason, they have won their last three completed league fixtures for a reason, and they possess a squad packed with players capable of deciding matches. The challenge now is simple. Turn potential into points, maintain top spot, and take another step towards what is becoming an increasingly exciting promotion push.

Weather Forecast:
Warm and sunny conditions are expected throughout the afternoon, with temperatures reaching the low 20s. After a washout last weekend and a number of rain-affected fixtures across Hertfordshire in recent weeks, both sides will be delighted to see dry skies forecast. A hard surface and quick outfield could make this an excellent day for batting, although bowlers who hit good areas early may still find assistance from a fresh pitch.
Ones To Watch - Hoddesdon
Dan Hawkins
The captain returns after last week's washout and has been one of the division's most economical bowlers all season. Seven wickets at an economy rate of just 2.30 tell their own story. Hawkins rarely gives batters anything easy and will be looking to control the game from the outset.
Louis Webb
Vice-captain and one of Hoddesdon's most influential all-rounders. His partnership of 130 with Bilal Ahmad against Preston remains the club's highest stand of the season. A genuine match-winner with bat or ball.
Scott Higgins
The return of Higgins gives Hoddesdon additional pace and wicket-taking threat. On a dry surface his ability to extract bounce and movement could prove crucial.
Tyler Burroughs
Potentially the game's x-factor. When Tyler gets going he scores quickly and heavily. Potters Bar will be hoping he has one of his quieter afternoons.
Paul Webb
Back with the 3rd XI after supporting Nirosh Perera's 4th XI in recent weeks. His experience, calmness and cricket intelligence are assets that never appear on a scorecard but often influence the outcome of matches.
Ones To Watch - Potters Bar
Kenny Horsman
The hosts' standout batter this season. His excellent 84 against Preston remains their highest individual score of the campaign and demonstrates exactly what he can do if allowed to settle.
Neeraj Mithal
A score of 64 against Hitchin highlighted his ability to build substantial innings. Hoddesdon's bowlers will want to remove him early.
Chan Basha Shaik
Potters Bar's leading wicket-taker. His figures of 3 for 33 against Hitchin show he is capable of breaking partnerships and changing games.
Alex Bhowmik
Three wickets at an economy rate of just 2.30 make him arguably Potters Bar's most disciplined bowler.
The visitors have built much of their success around disciplined bowling and relentless pressure. Potters Bar's biggest batting threat is undoubtedly Horsman. If Hawkins, Higgins and company can remove him cheaply, Hoddesdon will fancy their chances of restricting the home side.
While it may only be mid-June, this fixture carries significant importance in the promotion race. Hoddesdon begin the weekend top of Division 12 East, but Datchworth and Hitchin sit just one point behind. Any slip-up could see Hawkins' men surrender top spot, while another victory would strengthen their position heading into a crucial run of fixtures. Potters Bar, meanwhile, know a win over the league leaders would significantly boost their own campaign and potentially throw the title race wide open.
The week off should leave Hoddesdon refreshed rather than rusty. The return of Hawkins, Paul Webb, Scott Higgins and Louis Webb gives the side excellent balance, while the visitors possess greater depth in both batting and bowling than their hosts. Potters Bar have enough quality to make life difficult, particularly at home, and players such as Horsman and Mithal are capable of producing match-winning performances. However, based on current form, league position and overall squad strength, Hoddesdon will travel to Dame Alice Owen School believing they have every chance of returning to Hertingfordbury with another valuable 30 points.
