Webb Of Intrigue! Young Louis Ready To Spin A New Tale For Hoddy

The early-season promotion race in Division 12 East already has the feel of something special, and this Saturday afternoon another fascinating chapter will be written as Hoddesdon CC Saturday 3rd XI welcome Hitchin CC 5th XI to Hertingfordbury Cricket Ground.

With just a single point separating the top three sides in the table at the time of writing, this fixture has all the ingredients of a genuine early-season heavyweight clash. Hoddesdon sit proudly at the summit on 104 points after winning three of their opening four matches, while Hitchin arrive just one point behind in third place having also won three from four. Datchworth separate the two sides only on points, underlining just how tight and competitive the division has become already.

And while there is still a long way to go this season, there is no escaping the fact that Saturday’s encounter feels important. Momentum matters. Confidence matters. Statements matter.

The good news for Hoddesdon supporters is that, despite several players stepping up into higher-grade cricket this weekend, the squad still looks likely to possess plenty of quality, experience and depth. At the time of writing, the official team selection has not yet been confirmed, with availability still being checked on a couple of players, so any suggested XI remains speculative rather than official. However, it is expected that young Louis Webb will captain the side in the absence of Dan Hawkins, who moves up to the 2nd XI alongside Freddie Hawkins, Henry Taylor and Austin Bean. All four deserve enormous congratulations for their promotions. The strength of any successful cricket club is measured by its ability to develop players and move them upwards through the sides, and Hoddesdon continue to do exactly that.

Importantly for the 3rd XI, the absence of a 4th XI fixture this weekend means there is still a strong pool of players available to ensure the side is far from weakened.

Experienced all-rounder Paul Webb is expected to feature once again and remains one of the division’s most influential cricketers. Ross Maughan is likely to return, while wicketkeeper Ben Marques, Reece Jones, Scott Higgins, Nirosh Perera, Sampathreddy Palepu and Nikunj Pradhan are all expected to be involved in some capacity. Again, none of that is official at this stage, but it gives supporters a strong indication that Hoddesdon should still field a very capable side.

One particularly intriguing subplot surrounds the appointment of Louis Webb as captain.

Still a young player, Webb has quietly built an increasingly impressive reputation around the club in recent seasons and is viewed by many as one of Hoddesdon’s brightest developing cricketers. His all-round statistics back that up. Across his Hoddesdon career so far, Webb has scored 728 runs, including two half centuries, while also taking 65 wickets. Those numbers tell the story of a cricketer capable of influencing matches in multiple disciplines. His bowling has perhaps developed fastest. Webb’s best figures of 3 for 17 came during a friendly fixture in 2023, while he also claimed 3 for 21 against Harlow Town 3rd XI last summer. In 2025 he picked up 20 wickets at an economy rate just above five an over, proving both reliable and difficult to score from.

With the bat, his unbeaten 51 against Matching Green last season demonstrated his growing maturity and composure under pressure. Scores of 47 against Thorley, 40 against Harlow Town and 38 against Dunmow highlighted increasing consistency too. It is clear Hoddesdon see him as someone capable of becoming a major player for the club in the years ahead.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s fixture, Webb admitted he was excited by the opportunity to lead the side.

It’s obviously a massive honour to captain any Hoddesdon side,” he said.

I’ve grown up around the club and learnt a lot from senior players over the years, so to get the opportunity is something I’m really proud of. We know Hitchin are a good side and the table reflects that, but there’s confidence in the dressing room as well. We’ve started the season strongly and the lads are enjoying their cricket.

Webb also praised the strength in depth available to the club despite several players moving into higher elevens.

One of the best things about Hoddesdon at the moment is that there’s competition for places everywhere. Dan, Freddie, Henry and Austin all deserve their opportunities in the 2nd XI and everyone is really pleased for them. But we’ve also got experienced lads and quality players coming into this side too, so we still feel very confident.

Saturday’s visitors certainly cannot be underestimated. Hitchin arrive in excellent form having won three of their four league matches so far this season. Their victories over Letchworth Garden City, Enfield and Hatfield & Crusaders showed resilience and consistency, while their only defeat came in a narrow eight-run loss away at Potters Bar. Importantly, they have demonstrated an ability to win games in different ways. Against Letchworth Garden City they chased down 123 comfortably for the loss of only two wickets. Against Enfield they held their nerve during a chase of 127. Last weekend they edged out Hatfield & Crusaders in a high-scoring thriller by just two runs after posting 219 for 7. That final result in particular will certainly have caught Hoddesdon’s attention.

Several Hitchin players have already produced eye-catching individual performances this season and Hoddesdon’s bowlers will need to be sharp from the outset. Asad Ali currently leads the Hitchin batting charts with 174 runs at an average of 58.00, including an unbeaten 51. Kezia Hassall has also impressed enormously, scoring 125 runs at an outstanding strike rate above 93, including a superb 64 against Hatfield & Crusaders. Stuart Gadsden’s unbeaten 50 against Letchworth further underlines the batting depth within the Hitchin line-up.

With the ball, Adam Hassall leads the wicket-taking charts with six wickets at an economy rate below four an over. Henry Heath’s remarkable figures of 5 for 16 against Letchworth Garden City stand out as the division’s best bowling performance so far this season, while Mark Scanlan has also impressed with four wickets at a miserly average of just 3.75.

Webb knows exactly where the danger lies.

They’ve clearly got some players in good form,” he admitted.

You don’t get to third in the table by accident. Their batting looks strong and they’ve got bowlers who can really control games if you let them settle. But we back ourselves too. We’ve got plenty of experience, a lot of energy and some lads who can change games quickly.

One major talking point this weekend could be the weather. Forecasts suggest warm temperatures throughout Saturday but with rain potentially arriving later in the day, meaning captains may face some fascinating tactical decisions. A dry pitch at Hertingfordbury could reward aggressive batting and spin bowling early on, but any moisture arriving later in the afternoon could suddenly transform conditions entirely. For Hoddesdon, the likely inclusion of experienced seamers such as Scott Higgins alongside the options of Webb and Sampathreddy Palepu could prove particularly useful if the weather becomes unpredictable. Equally, Paul Webb’s all-round experience could become invaluable in managing the ebbs and flows of what promises to be a tense contest.

Then there is Nirosh Perera.

Fresh from captaining the 4th XI and winning the Greene King Level Head Green Jacket recently, Perera’s expected availability could prove a major boost. His calm temperament and versatility give Hoddesdon extra balance, while his leadership qualities are highly respected throughout the club. Meanwhile, Ben Marques’ work behind the stumps may also prove crucial. In tight league matches like this, sharp wicketkeeping and clean glovework can often make the difference between victory and defeat.

The atmosphere around the 3rd XI setup currently appears extremely positive. Promotion races often bring pressure, but there also seems to be genuine enjoyment and camaraderie within the group. That balance can be incredibly important across a long cricket season.

Webb himself was keen to stress exactly that.

We want to compete and win every game obviously, but we’ve also got a really good group of lads who enjoy playing together. There’s a good mix of youth and experience and everyone contributes. Hopefully we can put on another strong performance this weekend.

The wider significance of the fixture certainly adds extra intrigue. A victory for Hoddesdon would keep them top and potentially create a small early gap between themselves and one of their nearest challengers. A defeat, meanwhile, could see Hitchin leapfrog them and tighten the table even further. At this stage of the season no title races are won or lost, but matches between promotion contenders always carry extra psychological importance. For Hoddesdon supporters, there is also excitement in seeing another generation beginning to emerge. The sight of Louis Webb captaining the side while players such as Freddie Hawkins, Henry Taylor and Austin Bean continue progressing through the ranks is another reminder that the club’s future appears extremely healthy. Saturday therefore feels like another glimpse into where Hoddesdon Cricket Club is heading. A young captain. A side packed with opportunity. A top-of-the-table clash. Warm weather, possible rain, pressure cricket and two in-form teams desperate to make a statement.

Not bad for a Saturday afternoon in Hertingfordbury.
