Hoddesdon CC Saturday 3rd XI climbed to the summit of Division 12 East after edging out Preston CC 4th XI by four wickets in a gripping, sun-soaked contest at Hertingfordbury Cricket Club on Saturday afternoon.

Played in sweltering temperatures that nudged towards 30 degrees, the game delivered a remarkable collection of individual performances, dramatic momentum swings and moments that will live long in the memory for everybody present. Benjamin Strong produced one of the great 3rd XI bowling spells with a sensational seven-wicket haul, while Preston’s Srini Nanjundan responded with a hat-trick during a chaotic collapse in the Hoddesdon chase. Yet despite the drama, calm heads ultimately prevailed as Bilal Ahmad carried his bat superbly for an unbeaten 72 to guide Dan Hawkins’ side home and continue Hoddesdon’s outstanding start to the campaign.

The victory means the 3rd XI now sit top of Division 12 East with 74 points from their opening three matches, narrowly ahead of Datchworth and Hitchin. It is a deserved reward for a side that has started the season with excellent spirit, togetherness and consistency.

With the mercury rising rapidly before a ball had even been bowled, Preston captain John Garnham won the toss and elected to bat first on a dry Hertingfordbury surface that looked ideal for batting. Early on, the visitors appeared justified in that decision as Garnham and Craig Tennant settled quickly against the new ball.

Louis Webb and Freddie Hawkins opened the bowling for Hoddesdon and both worked hard in difficult conditions, but Tennant in particular looked keen to counterattack. The Preston opener struck five boundaries in an entertaining 25 from just 23 deliveries, helping the visitors race to 50 before the breakthrough finally arrived.

Captain Dan Hawkins brought himself into the attack and immediately made an impact, trapping Tennant lbw to stem the flow of runs and inject fresh energy into the fielding side. From there, Hoddesdon gradually tightened their grip on proceedings. Hawkins bowled with impressive control in the heat, returning figures of 1-25 from eight tidy overs, while Freddie Hawkins also delivered a disciplined eight-over spell that conceded only 27 runs.

Preston’s innings was anchored by captain Garnham, who battled hard for 59 from 112 balls. His innings was full of patience and determination, and at one stage it looked as though the visitors may push towards a much larger total. However, the game changed completely once Benjamin Strong entered the attack.

What followed was extraordinary.

Strong tore through the middle and lower order with a devastating spell of 7-22 from just 6.5 overs, completely transforming the match and leaving Preston shellshocked. Wickets began tumbling at regular intervals as Strong found rhythm, movement and relentless accuracy. Batsmen were pinned on the crease, edges flew into the cordon and pressure mounted with every dot ball. His spell included the wickets of Garnham, Matthew Burleigh, Greig Hearne, Mihir Shah, Srini Nanjundan, Gillan Ide and Hendrix Ide, with several catches smartly taken behind the wicket or in the ring as Hoddesdon backed up their bowler superbly in the field.

The dismissal of Garnham proved especially important. Having carried Preston through the middle overs with resilience and composure, the captain was eventually caught by Henry Taylor off Strong’s bowling for 59, ending a stand that had threatened to take the game away from Hoddesdon.

Strong’s figures were exceptional in any context, but even more impressive given the conditions and the pressure situation when he entered the attack. Remarkably, despite such a stunning performance, he narrowly missed out on the club’s coveted Green Jacket award, edged out only by another extraordinary display from overseas star Himesh Ramanayake for the 1st XI.

Henry Taylor also chipped in with an important wicket, Joe Robinson claimed a neat catch behind the stumps, and Martin Atkinson got deserved reward for an economical spell when he bowled Irfan Rabbani late in the innings.

Crucially, Hoddesdon’s discipline with the ball proved a major difference between the sides. While Preston eventually closed on 144 all out from 31.3 overs, Hoddesdon conceded only 18 extras throughout the innings. In contrast, Preston’s bowlers and fielders would later gift Hoddesdon a staggering 39 extras in reply — a statistic that ultimately proved hugely costly.

Despite restricting Preston to a manageable total, Hoddesdon’s chase got off to an uncomfortable start.

Bilal Ahmad opened alongside Freddie Hawkins and immediately looked assured, but wickets soon began tumbling around him. Freddie made a positive six before falling to Gillan Ide, while Ross Maughan departed shortly afterwards without scoring.

Then came one of the most dramatic moments of the afternoon.

With Hoddesdon wobbling, Preston spinner Srini Nanjundan produced a sensational hat-trick that briefly threatened to turn the entire match on its head. Dan Hawkins was trapped lbw before Tyler Burroughs and Martin Atkinson followed in successive deliveries, leaving Hoddesdon reeling. When Benjamin Strong also fell soon after to give Nanjundan a fourth wicket, the hosts had collapsed from a position of control into serious trouble. It was an incredible piece of bowling and sat right up there with the similarly stunning performance displayed by Strong before hand.

At 15-6, the match looked to be slipping away. Yet amidst the chaos, Bilal Ahmad remained calm.

The Hoddesdon batter showed maturity, composure and excellent game awareness throughout a superb unbeaten innings of 72 from 92 balls. While wickets tumbled around him, Bilal refused to panic, instead gradually rebuilding the innings alongside Louis Webb in a magnificent match-winning partnership. Webb’s contribution should not be underestimated. The young opener played with real determination and discipline for his unbeaten 28 from 76 deliveries, perfectly complementing Bilal’s more fluent strokeplay. Together, the pair steadied nerves, absorbed pressure and slowly but surely dragged Hoddesdon back into control.

Bilal struck ten boundaries in his innings and looked particularly strong square of the wicket as the Preston attack tired in the oppressive heat. Importantly, he carried his bat through the entire innings, guiding the side home with maturity beyond his years. The pair were also aided by Preston’s lack of discipline in the field. Extras flowed throughout the chase, with wides, byes, no balls and leg byes steadily adding to Hoddesdon’s total. By the end of the innings, Preston’s extras tally of 39 had become their second-highest contribution behind Bilal’s unbeaten knock.

Still, Hoddesdon deserved enormous credit for regaining composure after the collapse. Lesser sides may have folded under the pressure of a hat-trick and a dramatic middle-order implosion, but Hawkins’ men stuck together impressively and showed the character that has underpinned their excellent start to the season.

Speaking after the victory, captain Dan Hawkins praised both the resilience of his side and the incredible individual performances that shaped the contest.

“It was a really tough game in horrible heat, but I thought the lads showed great character,” said Hawkins. “Ben Strong was absolutely unbelievable with the ball. Seven wickets in that heat is incredible and he completely changed the game for us. Huge credit also goes to Bilal and Louis. At one stage things were looking very difficult after the hat-trick, but they stayed calm and batted brilliantly. Bilal carrying his bat like that was a fantastic effort.”

Hawkins also reserved praise for the atmosphere around the side and the excellent start his team have made to the season.

“The spirit in this group is brilliant at the moment. Everybody is contributing and enjoying their cricket. To be top of the table after three games is a really pleasing position to be in, but we know there’s still a long way to go.”

The victory leaves Hoddesdon sitting proudly at the top of Division 12 East with 74 points, one point clear of Datchworth and Hitchin, both on 73. With confidence growing and contributions coming throughout the side, optimism around the 3rd XI camp continues to build.

On a scorching afternoon at Hertingfordbury, this was a match packed with drama, fight and outstanding individual displays. Benjamin Strong’s sensational seven-wicket haul will rightly dominate headlines, while Srini Nanjundan’s Preston hat-trick ensured the visitors played their part in an enthralling contest. Ultimately though, Bilal Ahmad’s cool-headed unbeaten 72 proved decisive as Hoddesdon battled through the chaos to secure another memorable win and continue their impressive rise to the top of the table.
