LAST-WICKET HEARTBREAK FOR HODDY 3S IN OPENING-DAY THRILLER

Hoddesdon CC Saturday 3rd XI’s 2026 league campaign began in agonising fashion on Saturday afternoon as Datchworth CC 3rd XI snatched a dramatic one-wicket victory in a tense Division 12 East encounter at the picturesque Hertingfordbury Cricket Club.

In a game that swung wildly throughout the afternoon, Dan Hawkins’ side came desperately close to pulling off a memorable defence of 146, only for the visitors to edge over the line with just one wicket remaining in the 38th over. Despite the disappointment of defeat, there was plenty of encouragement for Hoddesdon to take from an opening-day display packed with fight, resilience and commitment.

Having lost the toss, captain Hawkins was inserted into bat by the visitors on a surface offering assistance to seam bowlers early on. With conditions fresh and slightly overcast at St Mary’s Lane, Datchworth skipper Chris Sharp had little hesitation in asking Hoddesdon to set a target. Ross Maughan and Nikunj Pradhan walked out to open the batting for Hoddesdon knowing the first hour could prove crucial. Maughan looked in good touch from the outset, driving crisply through the off side and punishing anything overpitched. His 19 included four boundaries and briefly hinted at the foundations of a sizeable Hoddesdon total. Nikunj, meanwhile, battled hard for his 10 from 27 deliveries, absorbing pressure while wickets and movement remained very much in the game.

The opening partnership reached 33 before Jamie Clark struck the first blow for Datchworth, bowling Maughan after a lively opening spell. It would prove the beginning of a difficult middle period for the home side. Pradhan fell shortly afterwards for 10, again to Clark, before Hoddesdon suddenly found themselves wobbling badly at 43-4. Joe Robinson was trapped lbw by Michael Nash for 1, while Joe Clarke endured the frustration of a first-ball duck as Nash struck again immediately to leave the hosts reeling. When Reece Jones was bowled by Clark for 0 just three runs later, Datchworth sensed a major opportunity to seize control of the contest.

At 46-5, the innings stood delicately balanced and Hoddesdon desperately needed calm heads.

Captain Hawkins attempted to counter-attack, striking two boundaries during an energetic cameo of 10 from 14 balls, but Nash continued to prove awkward to negotiate and eventually removed the skipper to deepen the pressure at 50-6. For a period, it looked as though the innings might unravel entirely. Yet one of the most pleasing aspects of the afternoon for Hoddesdon was the refusal of the lower order to simply roll over.

Louis Webb dug in stubbornly despite scoring just a single run in a determined 21-ball stay at the crease. His resistance helped stabilise things alongside George Kimberley, who contributed an important 11, including two boundaries, before being caught behind off Matthew Lewis. Benjamin Strong then added another useful 10 before falling to Ben Akers, but by this stage Hoddesdon had at least dragged themselves into three figures.

The defining partnership of the innings came right at the end. Kyle Hay produced a superb unbeaten knock of 33 from 40 deliveries to give the innings real momentum late on. Calm, positive and intelligent in his shot selection, Hay struck three boundaries and farmed the strike expertly during the closing overs. Alongside him, Sampathreddy Palepu made a valuable 15 from 30 balls, frustrating the Datchworth bowlers and helping add crucial runs to the total. Together, the pair guided Hoddesdon from a vulnerable 105-9 to 146 all out in 34.4 overs — a recovery that felt highly significant given the earlier collapse. Extras also played a surprisingly major role, with Datchworth conceding 36 in total, including 20 wides.

For the visitors, Jamie Clark and Michael Nash both claimed three wickets, while Matthew Lewis and Ben Akers chipped in with two apiece. Although 146 perhaps looked below par at the halfway stage, the mood around the Hoddesdon camp remained upbeat. Hertingfordbury’s surface still offered assistance for disciplined bowling and Hawkins knew early breakthroughs could quickly turn the pressure back onto the visitors.

That belief proved justified almost immediately.

Louis Webb struck in the eighth ball of the innings, bowling Chris Sharp for 6, before Hawkins himself removed Jae Pearse for 8 with the score on 20. When Benjamin Strong dismissed Trent Miller for 5 and Webb trapped Martin Peacock shortly afterwards, Datchworth suddenly found themselves in major trouble at 28-4. The noise around the ground noticeably lifted. Fielders buzzed around the bat, encouragement flowed from every corner of the field and suddenly Hoddesdon looked capable of pulling off a remarkable defence. Hawkins continued to lead aggressively, rotating his bowlers cleverly and keeping pressure on the visitors throughout the middle overs. The skipper’s own spell was especially impressive. Hawkins returned figures of 2-13 from eight economical overs, while Webb was equally outstanding with 2-12 from his full allocation. Strong also bowled with excellent control to finish with 2-31, while Reece Jones and Kyle Hay each chipped in with a wicket.

The key moment in the Datchworth recovery came through Michael Nash.

With wickets tumbling around him, Nash remained calm and composed, gradually piecing together what ultimately became the match-winning innings. His unbeaten 41 proved invaluable in anchoring the chase during the tense latter stages. Matthew Lewis also played a vital hand with 38, helping repair the innings after the early collapse. Even so, Hoddesdon refused to let the contest drift away. Jamie Clark was caught behind by Kimberley off Jones for 17, while Alex Nee was run out brilliantly by Joe Robinson as the pressure intensified once more.

As wickets continued to fall, the game edged deeper into nail-biting territory. At several moments it genuinely felt as though Hoddesdon were about to complete an extraordinary comeback victory. Unfortunately for the hosts, Nash and Ben Akers held their nerve just long enough to guide Datchworth across the line on 147-9 in the 38th over, sealing victory by the narrowest possible margin. For Hoddesdon, the sight of the visitors celebrating was understandably frustrating after coming so close, but there was also clear evidence throughout the afternoon that Hawkins’ side possesses spirit and determination in abundance.

Speaking afterwards, captain Dan Hawkins admitted the result was painful but took plenty of positives from the performance.

“It’s obviously disappointing to lose that closely, especially after fighting our way back into the game with the ball,” Hawkins said.

“At 50-6 with the bat, a lot of teams could have folded completely, but Kyle and Sampathreddy gave us something to bowl at and showed real character.”

The skipper was also full of praise for the effort and attitude shown during the defence of the total.

“The energy in the field was excellent. Louis bowled brilliantly, Ben Strong was outstanding and everyone kept believing right until the end.”

“You never want to lose opening day, but there were a lot of positives there. A few small moments go differently and we probably win the game.”

Hawkins also reflected positively on the developing atmosphere around the 3rd XI group heading into the new season.

“There’s a really good spirit in this side. We’ve got experienced players, younger lads improving every week and everybody wants to contribute. If we keep that attitude, results will come.”

And while defeat leaves Hoddesdon sitting mid-table after the opening weekend, the performance itself suggested this group could become a difficult side to beat throughout the summer. The lower-order resistance, disciplined bowling and determined fielding all pointed toward a side willing to scrap for every run and wicket. Opening day may ultimately have ended in heartbreak, but there was enough encouragement on display at Hertingfordbury to suggest brighter afternoons lie ahead for Hawkins and his team as the 2026 Division 12 East campaign gathers pace.
