Hoddesdon CC 2nd XI return to Lowfield this Saturday for one of the toughest fixtures of their Division 4B season, as league leaders Old Albanian CC 1st XI arrive in town with promotion ambitions still burning brightly. For Adrian “Animal” Lee’s side, the picture is very different but just as urgent, with Hoddesdon sitting ninth in the table and still scrapping for every possible point in their attempt to pull off a late escape.

The latest league table underlines just how steep the challenge has become, but it also shows that Hoddesdon’s fight is not yet over. Old Albanian sit top with 381 points from 15 matches, just one ahead of Boxmoor in second, while Hoddesdon are ninth on 194 points, 48 behind eighth-placed Stevenage and 24 clear of basement side Preston. That gap to safety means Hoddesdon almost certainly need wins, not just bonus points, across the closing stretch of the season. They have won twice, lost 12 times and had one match cancelled, but their 50 batting points and 74 bowling points show that they have regularly found ways to compete in sections of games even when the final result has gone against them.

The Table As It Stands

Last week’s 108-run defeat away at Luton Town & Indians was another setback, particularly after the morale-boosting win over Preston seven days earlier. Hoddesdon had gone into that Luton game with belief after finally getting over the line at Lowfield, but Luton’s powerful 290 for seven left them chasing too much despite Harry Mason’s half-century on his return from injury. The recent form line makes uncomfortable reading, with Hoddesdon’s last five showing four defeats and one win. They were beaten by Luton Town & Indians, beat Preston by seven wickets, lost by nine wickets at Boxmoor, were heavily beaten by Northampton Exiles, and also lost at home to Stevenage, so a big performance at Lowfield is desperately needed.

Old Albanian arrive in exactly the sort of form expected from a side sitting at the top of the division. Their last five show four wins and one defeat, with a 168-run win over Northampton Exiles, a 223-run demolition of Stevenage, a 154-run victory over North Enfield and a narrow one-wicket defeat to Lutonian all featuring in a powerful recent run.

The reverse fixture on 20 June was a bruising afternoon for Hoddesdon at The Woollam Playing Fields, where Old Albanian won by 196 runs. They piled up 286 for nine from their 50 overs before Hoddesdon were bowled out for just 90 in 30.1 overs, with Umar Mahmood’s 5 for 8 still standing out as one of Old Albanian’s best bowling displays of the campaign. That previous meeting also included Brendan Warren’s unbeaten 99, which remains one of Old Albanian’s standout batting performances this season. Hoddesdon will know that simply avoiding a repeat is not enough this time, because their league situation demands a competitive display, a meaningful points return and ideally a result that would shake the division.

The 2nd XI Were Soundly Beaten Back In June

Old Albanian’s danger men are not difficult to identify, but stopping them is another matter entirely. Johann De Jager has been the headline act with 607 runs, including two centuries and a stunning top score of 226, while James Barwick has made 401 runs, Ben Scott has 315 and Timothy Davies has contributed 280 in a batting unit packed with form and depth. De Jager’s recent run has been particularly eye-catching, with his 226 against Stevenage followed by 116 against Northampton Exiles. Those are the sorts of scores that can remove a game from reach in a single innings, so Hoddesdon’s bowlers will need discipline, patience and no freebies if he gets to the crease at Lowfield.

The Old Albanian bowling numbers are equally imposing, with James Barwick leading the way on 25 wickets and Umar Mahmood close behind with 23. Pete Jordan has 16, Likith Reddy has 15 and Rowan Black has 13, while Mathys Du Plessis has already produced a five-wicket haul this season and has shown he can be destructive when conditions suit him.

Mahmood’s figures are especially relevant after what he did to Hoddesdon earlier in the summer. He has sent down 116.4 overs, taken 23 wickets, bowled 32 maidens and gone at just 2.75 runs per over, which makes him the kind of bowler who can squeeze a batting line-up into mistakes even without dramatic spells.

Hoddesdon’s own season statistics tell a story of individuals fighting hard through difficult circumstances. Adrian Lee remains the leading run-scorer with 349, Daniel Hawkins owns the highest individual score with 71, and George Kimberley holds the best strike-rate mark at 121.74, while Freddie Webb is still the leading wicket-taker with 15 despite being unavailable this weekend. Greg Marsh’s 5 for 26 remains the best 2nd XI bowling performance of the season. This weekend, however, Hoddesdon will have to manage without the Webb family, with Paul and Freddie both away enjoying the sunshine rather than sweating through another relegation scrap at Lowfield.

The selected Hoddesdon XI is Daniel Hawkins, Connor Hunt, Phil Stafford, Adrian Lee, Freddie Hawkins, Ross Angelini, Ben de Fig, Louis Purves, Robert Aindow, Mick Billson and Charlie Tackley. Lee captains the side, Ben de Fig takes the gloves, and Head of Cricket Louis Purves makes a rare but very welcome appearance in a team that blends experience, grit and a few familiar Lowfield battlers.

Ross Angelini’s return gives Hoddesdon a calm and experienced presence in the middle order, while Phil Stafford also comes back into the side after missing the Preston win. Rob Aindow retains his place, Mick Billson adds another senior option, and Charlie Tackley’s bowling will again be important after his excellent four-wicket burst against Preston earlier this month.

Animal knows the size of the task, but he remains determined to keep the mood competitive rather than resigned. “We know where we are and we know who we are playing, but there is no point turning up if you do not believe you can compete,” said Lee. “Old Albanian are are in good nick but we have to make Lowfield a difficult place to come and we have to fight for every point.”

Lee also wants his players to embrace the challenge rather than fear it, particularly after a season in which confidence has taken plenty of hits. “The lads have had some tough Saturdays, but there is still character in this group and there are still cricketers here who care deeply,” he added. “We need partnerships, we need pressure with the ball, and we need to stay in the game for longer than we did in the reverse fixture.”

Lowfield Will Once Again Play Host To The 2nd XI

For Hoddesdon, the first hour with bat or ball could shape the whole afternoon. If they bowl first, early wickets against Old Albanian’s powerful top order would transform the mood instantly, while if they bat first, avoiding the sort of collapse that hurt them in the reverse fixture will be absolutely vital. Lowfield has already seen a few dramatic 2nd XI moments this season, including the long-awaited win over Preston, and Hoddesdon will hope home advantage can count again. There is no pretending that this is anything other than a hugely difficult assignment, but a side fighting for survival has to find belief from somewhere, and Saturday offers one last chance to bloody the nose of a title challenger.

The situation remains precarious, but it is not yet final. Until the table says survival is impossible, Hoddesdon will keep fighting, and if they can produce their most complete performance of the season against the league leaders, Saturday could still become the kind of afternoon that keeps hope alive for one more week.
