Hoddesdon Cricket Club 2nd XI return to Lowfield this Saturday for what already feels like one of the defining afternoons of their season, as Preston CC, Herts 2nd XI arrive for a bottom-of-the-table Division 4B scrap that neither side can afford to lose. With just one point separating the two clubs, this is not a fixture that needs dressing up or overselling, because the league table tells the story clearly enough.

Hoddesdon sit ninth on 152 points after 13 matches, one place and one point above Preston, who arrive at Lowfield bottom on 151. Both sides have endured difficult campaigns, both arrive on a run of five straight defeats, and both know that the loser on Saturday will be left in an increasingly uncomfortable position with the season entering its final stretch. For Adrian Lee and his side, the task is simple enough to understand, even if it has been much harder to achieve in recent weeks. Hoddesdon need a win, they need it urgently, and they will hope that home advantage, a much-changed but spirited side, and the familiar surroundings of Lowfield can finally help them turn encouraging passages of cricket into the result they have been chasing for too long.

“We know exactly where we are and we know exactly what Saturday means,” said the captain. “This is two sides fighting for the same thing, it is at our place, and we have to be brave enough to go and grab the opportunity.”

The league table remains brutally honest reading, even after Hoddesdon climbed off the foot of the division last weekend. Old Albanian lead the way on 321 points, just ahead of Boxmoor on 320, with Luton Town & Indians on 312 and Lutonian on 302 making up a powerful top four. At the other end, Preston and Hoddesdon have become locked together, while Stevenage sit eighth on 219 and Northampton Exiles seventh on 235, showing just how big the gap to safety has now become. Hoddesdon’s record shows one win, eleven defeats and one cancelled match, with 45 batting bonus points and 67 bowling bonus points keeping them alive in the fight. Preston have two wins, ten defeats and one cancelled match, but their lower bonus-point return has allowed Hoddesdon to edge above them by the narrowest possible margin. That single point advantage is welcome, but everyone in green and gold knows it will mean very little unless it is built upon this weekend.

Ninth Plays Tenth This Saturday With Both Sides Desperate To Win

The two sides were due to meet earlier in the season, on Saturday 6 June, at Preston’s ground, but bad weather meant the match was cancelled before a ball could be bowled. That washout makes Saturday’s Lowfield fixture the first and only meeting between the clubs this season, adding even more weight to an already huge afternoon. There is no previous 2026 head-to-head form to fall back on, no first meeting to learn from, and no second chance later in the campaign.

Hoddesdon’s recent run has been painful, but it has not been without moments of fight. Last weekend at Boxmoor, Phil Stafford made an excellent 71 and Ross Angelini marked his return to 2nd XI cricket with a fluent unbeaten 30, but Boxmoor chased down 181 for the loss of just one wicket. Before that came the heavy defeat at Northampton Exiles, an eight-wicket home loss to Stevenage, the agonising two-wicket defeat away to North Enfield, and the bruising trip to Lutonian. Preston arrive in similarly desperate need of a lift, having also lost their last five. They were beaten by eight wickets at home to Northampton Exiles last Saturday after being bowled out for 141, and the week before they were dismissed for 92 as Stevenage won by seven wickets. Their previous results include a six-wicket defeat against North Enfield, a 131-run loss to Lutonian, and a difficult spell that has dragged them back into the bottom two alongside Hoddesdon.

Preston's Recent Form

Those recent defeats will not fool Hoddesdon into thinking Preston are short of danger, because their squad contains players capable of making the difference in a tight game. With the bat, Arundeep Natt is Preston’s leading run-scorer this season with 162 runs, while David Fleckney has 160 and Peter Williamson has 138. William Gallimore has already made 65 this season, Oliver Nethercot has a top score of 52 and a strike rate above 92, and Archie McIntosh’s unbeaten 61 against Northampton Exiles shows there are runs in the Preston order if Hoddesdon allow them to settle. Their biggest threat, however, appears to come with the ball, where Mark Waters has been the standout performer. Waters has taken 23 wickets this season, including two five-wicket hauls, with best figures of 5-21 and an outstanding economy rate of 2.37. Bhavin Patel has 14 wickets, Ariful Islam has 13, and Hoddesdon will also need to be wary of Joey Kelsall, Pushan Chakraborty, Ashley Catlin and Harry Fleckney if Preston’s attack finds rhythm on what could be a lively Lowfield surface.

The conditions may play a major part, with the forecast set to be dry and cool rather than fiercely hot. The Lowfield outfield has suffered heavily during the recent drought and is now very yellow, very dry and likely to be lightning quick on what is already a small ground with a fast pitch. The wicket itself is in excellent condition, and the club again thanks Adrian Lee and Barry Helliwell for the hard work they have put in to keep the square playing so well during a difficult summer. That fast outfield could reward positive batting, but it will also punish loose bowling and misfields, making discipline absolutely vital. Hoddesdon have collected bonus points regularly even in defeat, yet this is the sort of afternoon where bonus points alone will not feel enough. The 2nd XI need a complete performance, and the batting group in particular will want to make sure a decent platform becomes a genuinely competitive total.

Animal Has Worked Tirelessly During The Recent Drought

Selection has again thrown up plenty of talking points, with Paul Webb retaining his place after returning to the 2nd XI picture and Connor Hunt continuing near the top of the order. Dan Hawkins returns from holiday to help the cause, and Freddie Hawkins is also back, with both hopefully well tanned and ready to get straight back into the fight. Bilal Ahmad will keep wicket in the absence of Phil Stafford, while Mick Billson earns a deserved call-up after taking four wickets for the 3rd XI last Saturday. There is further strength and variety in the side, with Olly Maughan, Freddie Webb, Charlie Tackley and Austin Bean all named. Tackley features after a spell with the 1st XI and adds quality to the bowling options, while Bean returns as a young pace bowler who has already shown plenty of promise this season. Lee believes the side has enough ability to win the game, but he is under no illusion about the pressure surrounding it. “We have had some tough Saturdays and nobody is hiding from that, but the lads are still turning up and still fighting,” said Animal. “Paul keeps his place, Dan and Freddie coming back helps us, Mick deserves his chance after what he did for the 3s, and having Charlie and Austin in the side gives us good options with the ball.”

The skipper also stressed that confidence has to come from what Hoddesdon can control, rather than from staring too long at the table. “We need to do the basics better for longer,” Lee added. “At times this season we have batted well, at times we have bowled well, but we have not put enough full games together. Saturday has to be about staying calm, backing each other, and making sure Preston have to work incredibly hard for everything they get.”

For all the tension around the fixture, there is still an opportunity here for Hoddesdon to change the feel of their season. A victory would not solve everything, and the gap to safety would still require a serious late push, but it would put daylight between themselves and Preston while giving the dressing room something tangible to build from. A defeat, however, would hand the initiative back to the visitors and leave Hoddesdon staring at an even steeper climb. Saturday therefore has all the ingredients of a proper Lowfield battle: two sides under pressure, a fast outfield, a small ground, a dry forecast, and a league table that makes every run, wicket and bonus point feel significant. Hoddesdon will hope home advantage counts for something, but more than that, they will hope this is the weekend where grit, patience and belief finally turn into the win they so badly need.
