Skipper's Gamble Pays Off Despite Defeat

HUNTING FOR POSITIVES AS FLAMSTEAD PUNISH HODDESDON IN THE HEAT

Hoddesdon 2nd XI were beaten by a strong Flamstead 1st XI side by 181 runs in Division 4B of the Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League on Saturday, in another defeat for Animal's side. Yet within a difficult afternoon played under relentless sunshine and temperatures soaring well into the mid-30s, there were still encouraging individual performances that deserved recognition, not least from Connor Hunt, whose self-belief and determination produced an impressive innings under pressure.

With the temperature climbing throughout the afternoon and barely a breath of wind crossing Lowfield, conditions were as demanding as many players could remember. The outfield baked under the sun, concentration became increasingly difficult, and every over required enormous physical and mental resilience. Unfortunately for Hoddesdon, a combination of quality batting from the visitors and an all-too-familiar inability to consistently control the ball meant the mountain eventually became too steep to climb.

Winning the toss, Flamstead elected to bat first and immediately demonstrated why they arrived sitting fifth in the Division 4B table. Their batting line-up has consistently posted competitive totals throughout the campaign, and once again they showed the patience to build partnerships before accelerating through the middle and latter stages of the innings. Although Hoddesdon claimed wickets at regular intervals, they were never quite able to seize complete control. The opening breakthrough came courtesy of Austin Bean, who trapped Sandaru Liyanage leg before wicket for 32 after a lively opening partnership had laid solid foundations. Sachith Dassanayake had already struck an entertaining 36 before also falling to Bean, leaving Flamstead 76 for 2.

Austin Claimed A Brilliant 3 For 64 From Ten Overs

Those early breakthroughs gave Hoddesdon genuine hope of restricting the visitors, particularly with Freddie Hawkins and Freddie Webb finding useful contributions with the ball. However, the innings was expertly rebuilt by Sanjeewa Wijetunga, whose composed 62 anchored Flamstead through the middle overs, before powerful contributions from Tuan Hadgie (43) and an unbeaten 55 from Udan Weli ensured the visitors finished with an imposing 332 all out from 47.2 overs.

Despite the eventual total, there were positives within Hoddesdon's bowling display. Freddie Hawkins continued his encouraging development with an excellent return of 4 for 52 from 7.2 overs, repeatedly finding breakthroughs whenever the visitors threatened to completely run away with the contest. Austin Bean also impressed again at a higher standard, claiming 3 for 64 from his ten overs, while Freddie Webb produced another disciplined spell to collect 3 for 52. Those wicket returns demonstrated that Hoddesdon possess bowlers capable of dismissing quality batsmen. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of those wickets was significantly undermined by the sheer volume of free runs donated elsewhere. Thirty-four extras, including twenty-eight wides, once again proved enormously costly.

It has become an uncomfortable theme for the Second XI this season and one that simply has to be addressed if results are to improve over the coming weeks. Every bowling attack occasionally loses its rhythm, particularly in oppressive heat, but gifting opponents the equivalent of more than five additional overs through wides alone places enormous pressure on every other aspect of the game. Against stronger batting sides, those gifts are ruthlessly punished. In total, Flamstead accumulated 34 extras, meaning more than ten per cent of their final total arrived without the batsmen needing to score from the bat. In a contest eventually lost by 181 runs, it would be simplistic to suggest extras alone decided the outcome, but they undeniably allowed pressure to evaporate at key moments and repeatedly interrupted promising spells from Hoddesdon's wicket-taking bowlers.

Captain Adrian Lee was honest in his assessment afterwards.

"Credit has to go to Flamstead because they batted really well and made us work hard in difficult conditions. Freddie Hawkins, Freddie Webb and Austin Bean all deserved their wickets because they kept asking questions, but we've got to stop making life harder for ourselves. It's becoming a pattern rather than an isolated game, and it's something we all need to own and improve because you cannot keep giving good sides that many free runs."

Freddie Webb Took Three Wickets On Saturday

Facing 333 for victory was always likely to require something extraordinary, yet Hoddesdon began brightly enough. Tyrone Mazarura fell early for four, but Connor Hunt's decision to promote himself up the order immediately became one of the day's biggest talking points.

Rather than waiting lower down the batting order, Hunt approached skipper Adrian Lee before the innings and asked for greater responsibility. It was a brave request from a young player, particularly against an attack containing several experienced bowlers, and it demonstrated exactly the sort of confidence and ambition coaches love to see. Crucially, he backed those words up with actions. Displaying excellent composure throughout his 59-ball stay at the crease, Hunt accumulated a superb 41 runs, striking seven crisp boundaries and refusing to be intimidated by Flamstead's disciplined attack. While wickets continued to tumble around him, Hunt remained positive, played with conviction and looked every inch a batsman capable of succeeding at this level. It was an innings that deserved far greater support from the opposite end. His dismissal for 41 eventually ended Hoddesdon's best partnership of the innings, but the knock represented a significant personal milestone and perhaps the clearest indication yet that he possesses both the confidence and technical ability to become a regular contributor within the Second XI.

Lee was full of praise for the young batsman afterwards.

"Connor deserves enormous credit. He came to me before the game and asked if he could move up because he wanted to take responsibility, and I absolutely love that attitude. It's easy to talk about backing yourself, but much harder to actually do it when you're walking out against the new ball chasing over 300. He played brilliantly, top scored for us, and hopefully that's the start of many more innings like that because he showed exactly the mindset we're looking for."

Connor Hunt Backed Himself And Came Up Trumps

Adrian Lee himself contributed 14 before falling to Manitha Liyanage, while Phil Stafford added 10. Ben de Fig battled hard for 27 before retiring hurt, leaving another gap in an already difficult chase. George Kimberley entertained with a quickfire 16 that included a maximum, but wickets continued falling at regular intervals as Flamstead's varied attack maintained control. Tuan Hadgie proved particularly effective, finishing with outstanding figures of 3 for 12 from seven economical overs, while Udan Weli collected 2 wickets and Ruchira Pupulewatte, Haresh De Silva, Manitha Liyanage and Inthikhab Mazeez each claimed one apiece. Hoddesdon were eventually dismissed for 151 in 39.5 overs, collecting valuable batting bonus points but ultimately suffering their sixth defeat from eight completed league fixtures.

The result leaves the Second XI rooted to the foot of Division 4B on 102 points following the latest league table update. While the standings make difficult reading, they perhaps don't fully reflect the effort being shown by a squad continuing to battle through a challenging campaign against predominantly First XI opposition.

The 2nd XI Currently Prop Up Division 4B Of The Herts Premier Cricket League

There remain positives to build upon.

Connor Hunt's innings was undoubtedly the headline performance with the bat, Freddie Hawkins continues to mature impressively with every outing, Freddie Webb and Austin Bean continue to collect wickets, and the squad's willingness to compete despite repeated setbacks has never been questioned. What now requires improvement is consistency. Reducing the extras column would immediately place less pressure on both batting and bowling units, while converting promising individual performances into collective displays remains the next major objective for Adrian Lee's side. There is a clear understanding that improvement must come quickly if Hoddesdon are to climb away from the foot of the table during the second half of the season.

On one sweltering afternoon, Flamstead demonstrated why they occupy the upper reaches of Division 4B. Hoddesdon, meanwhile, were left reflecting on another frustrating defeat, but also on the emergence of a young batsman whose confidence, courage and willingness to shoulder responsibility may yet become one of the season's most encouraging stories.
