Forty Three Extras Consign Hoddesdon To Defeat

ALBANIANS TAKE THE SPOILS AS HODDESDON RUE MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

Old Albanian CC 1st XI 286/9 (50 overs) beat Hoddesdon CC 2nd XI 90 all out (30.1 overs) by 196 runs

Hoddesdon 2nd XI endured a difficult afternoon in the searing St Albans sunshine on Saturday as Old Albanian claimed a comprehensive 196-run victory at Woollam Playing Fields, but there were still encouraging individual performances and valuable lessons to take from a challenging Division 4B encounter.

Captain Adrian Lee won the toss and elected to bowl first on a scorching day where temperatures climbed into the high twenties. Against a side sitting third in the league table and pushing for promotion, Hoddesdon knew they faced a stern examination. While the final scoreline made for uncomfortable reading, there were positive moments throughout the day, particularly with the ball, where Bilal Ahmad and Martin Atkinson both produced excellent spells to finish with three wickets apiece. The pair's efforts helped ensure Old Albanian never completely ran away with the contest despite eventually posting a formidable 286 for 9 from their 50 overs.

Unfortunately for Hoddesdon, a combination of costly extras in the field and a batting collapse in reply left the visitors with too much to do. The defeat leaves Hoddesdon ninth in Division 4B on 89 points, still ahead of bottom-placed Stevenage and with plenty of cricket remaining in the season.

After choosing to field first, Hoddesdon made a bright start when Connor Hunt struck in the eighth over. Timothy Davies departed for just three after Phil Stafford, keeping wicket, safely completed the catch behind the stumps. Stafford would enjoy a busy afternoon with the gloves and his contribution behind the stumps was one of the brighter aspects of the day. The experienced wicketkeeper remained alert throughout a long innings in difficult conditions and took an important catch to reward Hunt's persistence.

The Experienced Phil Stafford Kept Wicket For Hoddesdon

Old Albanian recovered through Ben Scott and Evan Love, who gradually rebuilt the innings. Scott made 19 before becoming the first of Martin Atkinson's victims, caught well by Louis Webb, while Love added 13 before Atkinson struck again. The introduction of Atkinson proved a turning point in the middle overs. Bowling with excellent control and discipline, he produced Hoddesdon's most economical spell of the day and deservedly finished with outstanding figures of 3 for 33 from his ten overs. Atkinson removed Scott, Love and then Riley Pullan for 18 as he repeatedly broke promising partnerships and prevented the home side from accelerating too quickly.

His efforts were matched by Bilal Ahmad, who also claimed three wickets and showed his value as a genuine all-round cricketer. Ahmad accounted for James Barwick, trapped Umar Mahmood leg before wicket first ball, and then removed Mathys Du Plessis to finish with figures of 3 for 43 from eight overs. Those six wickets between Atkinson and Ahmad provided Hoddesdon with a strong platform and ensured Old Albanian were forced to work hard for their runs. Louis Webb also chipped in with two wickets, dismissing Ben Scott and later combining with Ben De Fig to remove dangerous middle-order batter Haseeb Fariad. Connor Hunt claimed the other wicket to fall as every frontline bowler played their part.

Bilal Ahmad Took 3 for 43

The major frustration for Hoddesdon came in the extras column.

Old Albanian's total included a huge 43 extras, made up of 27 wides, nine byes, four leg byes and three no balls. In a match ultimately decided by 196 runs, those gifted runs represented a substantial contribution to the home side's score and provided momentum at crucial stages of the innings. It was particularly disappointing given how effectively Hoddesdon bowled for long periods. The visitors claimed nine wickets and regularly put Old Albanian's batters under pressure, but the inability to consistently minimise extras allowed the scoreboard to keep ticking over.

The Extras Column Played A Significant Role In The 2nd XI Defeat

The key partnership came between Haseeb Fariad and Brendan Warren. Fariad compiled a patient 52 from 66 deliveries, striking six boundaries before eventually falling to the combination of Webb and De Fig. Warren, however, proved much harder to remove. The Old Albanian batter produced the innings of the match, finishing unbeaten on 99 from just 77 balls. His knock included 12 fours and two sixes and provided the late acceleration that transformed a competitive total into a commanding one. Warren was left agonisingly short of a century when the innings closed on 286 for 9, but his innings ultimately proved decisive.

Speaking after the match, captain Adrian Lee praised the efforts of his wicket-taking bowlers but admitted the side had made life difficult for themselves.

"Martin and Bilal both bowled exceptionally well and fully deserved their three wickets each. Against one of the stronger batting sides in the division, to take nine wickets is encouraging and there were periods where we controlled the game really well. The obvious area we need to improve is the extras column. Forty-three extras is too many at any level of cricket and it's something we've spoken about. If we tighten that up, the scoreboard looks very different and we put ourselves in a much stronger position."

2nd XI Skipper Animal

With 287 needed for victory, Hoddesdon knew they required a strong start. Unfortunately, the reply never gained any momentum.

Bilal Ahmad was trapped lbw by Mathys Du Plessis with the score on five, before Oliver Maughan battled hard for his 13 from 44 balls. Tyrone Mazarura briefly provided some attacking intent, striking three boundaries in a rapid 14 from nine deliveries, but his dismissal left Hoddesdon 24 for 2.

What followed was a collapse that effectively ended the contest.

Phil Stafford and Freddie Hawkins attempted to rebuild, but Umar Mahmood's superb spell tore through the middle order. Stafford made 13, Hawkins added four, and when Louis Webb departed for a duck the visitors had slipped to 64 for 6. The innings never recovered. Ben De Fig battled for 7, Adrian Lee struck two boundaries in an enterprising 11 from 15 balls, and Martin Atkinson contributed a run, but wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals. Remarkably, no Hoddesdon batter managed to pass 14 runs. In fact, the visitors' highest contributor was the extras column, which yielded 23 runs. Only the extras exceeded Tyrone Mazarura's top score of 14, illustrating the scale of the batting difficulties on the day.

Tyrone Mazarura Top Scored With 14

While the batting card made difficult reading, there was no shortage of determination. Several players occupied the crease for significant periods, with Oliver Maughan facing 44 deliveries and Phil Stafford 38, but Old Albanian's bowlers consistently applied pressure and rarely offered scoring opportunities. Mahmood was the chief destroyer, producing extraordinary figures of 5 for 8 from ten overs, including five maidens. His spell removed Maughan, Stafford, Ben De Fig, Adrian Lee and Martin Atkinson and effectively put the result beyond doubt. Brendan Warren followed up his unbeaten 99 with 2 for 17, while Du Plessis and Pete Jordan each claimed a wicket. James Barwick wrapped up the innings when Freddie Webb was caught behind by Evan Love. Hoddesdon were eventually dismissed for 90 in the 31st over, with Connor Hunt unbeaten at the close.

The result means Old Albanian strengthen their position in third place on 153 points and remain firmly in the promotion conversation. Hoddesdon remain ninth with 89 points, two ahead of Stevenage and still within touching distance of Preston and Northampton Exiles above them.

Hoddesdon 2nd XI Find Themselves 9th In The Table

There is no disguising the disappointment of such a heavy defeat, but neither should it overshadow some genuinely positive individual performances. Martin Atkinson's 3 for 33 was arguably his finest spell of the season, combining accuracy, patience and wicket-taking threat. Bilal Ahmad matched him wicket for wicket and continues to provide valuable contributions in multiple disciplines. Phil Stafford worked tirelessly behind the stumps in oppressive conditions and completed an important catch, while Louis Webb and Connor Hunt also chipped in with wickets.

Captain Lee believes the challenge now is to learn quickly and move forward.

"Nobody enjoys losing by that margin, but we won't let one result define us. We've shown in recent weeks that we're capable of competing and winning games in this division. There are positives to take away, particularly with the ball. If we keep creating chances, keep taking wickets and cut out some of the extras, we'll give ourselves every chance. The focus now is on responding positively next weekend and showing the character that this group has."

On a sweltering afternoon against one of Division 4B's strongest sides, Hoddesdon discovered exactly how fine the margins can be in league cricket. The wickets of Atkinson and Ahmad demonstrated the quality within the side, but the costly extras and lack of substantial batting partnerships ultimately proved decisive. The challenge now is to regroup, sharpen the details and return stronger. With more than half the season still ahead, there remains plenty for Adrian Lee's men to play for.
