ANIMAL INSTINCT AS HODDY LOOK TO BITE BACK AGAINST BOXMOOR
Hoddesdon Cricket Club’s 2nd XI return to Lowfield this Saturday afternoon searching for a much-needed change in fortunes as they host high-flying Boxmoor CC in HPCL Division 4B action.
After a difficult opening month of the campaign, Adrian Lee’s side sit bottom of the table on 26 points, but there remains a strong sense within the camp that performances are beginning to show signs of improvement despite the results column remaining stubbornly frustrating. Last weekend’s defeat to Northampton Exiles at Lowfield marked a third successive league defeat for Hoddesdon, but the scoreline did not entirely reflect some encouraging individual performances with both Johnny Munday and Greg Marsh producing battling half centuries in oppressive conditions.
Freddie Webb also worked tirelessly with the ball to claim two wickets, while the side once again showed glimpses of resilience even as Northampton eventually chased down Hoddesdon’s 200 with relative comfort.
This weekend, however, presents another stern examination. Boxmoor arrive at Lowfield sitting third in Division 4B with 71 points and firmly among the early promotion contenders. Their form has been impressive, winning two of their opening three matches, including a crushing 153-run victory over Northampton Exiles just two weeks ago. That result alone will have caught the attention of everyone connected with Hoddesdon.
Boxmoor piled up a mammoth 376-3 in that contest, with Dave Henderson smashing 156 and Matt Smalley-Harris finishing unbeaten on 147 in one of the division’s most brutal batting displays seen so far this season. Those numbers underline precisely the kind of threat Hoddesdon will be facing this weekend.
Their batting statistics make for ominous reading too.
Henderson currently tops the performance charts with that devastating 156, while Smalley-Harris occupies second place with his unbeaten 147 from the same innings. Even further down the list sits Daniel Hobbs with 82 and Richard Crowther with 77, illustrating the sheer depth within the Boxmoor batting line-up. With the ball, Saa’ir Hamdani has already produced figures of 4-20 and 4-35 this season, while Richard Crowther’s 4-24 and Isma’il Ahmed’s 5-23 demonstrate Boxmoor’s ability to dismantle batting orders quickly.
Put simply, Hoddesdon will need to be sharp in every department. Yet despite the challenge ahead, there is still plenty of intrigue surrounding Saturday’s fixture, not least involving Hoddesdon skipper Adrian Lee. Lee endured a worrying week after a family trip to Norfolk ended with him being hospitalised due to a nasty infection, potentially caused by an insect or spider bite. Thankfully, the ever-popular captain is now recovering well and has still been named in the squad for Saturday’s game.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, Lee admitted it had been an unusual week.
“I’ve had better holidays, put it that way,” joked the Hoddesdon captain.
“One minute you’re trying to relax with the family and the next you’re sat in hospital wondering if your leg’s about to fall off. It’s been a bit grim, but thankfully the antibiotics have kicked in and I’m feeling much better now.”
Lee also thanked club members for their support throughout the week.
“The messages from everyone at Hoddy have been brilliant. That’s what this club is all about really. We might be struggling a bit on the pitch at the moment, but off it there’s no better bunch of people around.”
As for Saturday’s match, the captain knows the challenge awaiting his side but insists confidence remains within the dressing room.
“We know Boxmoor are a strong side and the league table doesn’t lie,” said Lee.
“But there’s still belief in our changing room. We’ve had periods in games where we’ve competed really well, we just haven’t put together a full 100 overs yet. If we can do that, we’ll surprise a few people.”
One player hoping to carry serious momentum into Saturday’s clash is Charlie Tackley.
The young all-rounder comes into the fixture fresh from a sensational performance in Hoddesdon’s Sunday Friendly XI match against Hertford last weekend. Despite the game ending in defeat, Tackley stole the show with a magnificent unbeaten century, blasting 100 not out featuring an astonishing 21 boundaries. It was an innings packed with confidence, timing and fearless strokeplay. Even more special was the fact he shared a superb 93-run partnership alongside his father Adam, creating one of those lovely cricketing moments that make club cricket so unique. As if the century was not enough, Tackley also claimed two wickets from his four overs, completing a genuinely outstanding all-round display.
Lee believes the youngster deserves enormous credit.
“Charlie was unbelievable on Sunday,” said the skipper.
“Anyone who scores a hundred with 21 fours deserves huge praise. He was striking the ball beautifully and looked so composed. You could see how much it meant batting with his dad too, which was brilliant to watch.”
Lee also hopes Tackley can transfer some of that form into Saturday’s contest.
“We’d absolutely love him to bring some of those runs into the league side. He’s a talented lad and hopefully Sunday gives him a massive confidence boost.”
Conditions at Lowfield are expected to once again favour batting. Temperatures are forecast to remain warm throughout Saturday afternoon, although some intermittent cloud cover may at least offer a little respite compared to last weekend’s relentless heat. Drinks breaks were well administered during the Northampton Exiles match and similar precautions are likely to be taken again if temperatures rise. For Hoddesdon, the key will likely be maintaining composure during crucial periods of the game. Too often this season, promising passages have quickly unravelled.
Against Northampton Exiles, Hoddesdon were well placed at stages thanks largely to Munday’s classy 59 and Marsh’s determined 53, but regular wickets elsewhere prevented them from posting a truly commanding total. Meanwhile, the bowling effort struggled to consistently apply pressure against a powerful Northampton batting line-up. Saturday provides another opportunity to correct those mistakes. There will also be hopes that Lowfield itself can play a role. Despite the difficult run of results, the atmosphere around the ground has remained positive, with strong support continuing for Lee’s side. And while the league table currently makes uncomfortable reading, there is still plenty of cricket left to play this summer.
Victories can rapidly change momentum in club cricket. Lee certainly refuses to panic.
“Nobody’s hiding from where we are in the table,” he admitted.
“But there’s still a long way to go this season. We’ve got lads who care massively about the club and about each other. We keep working hard, we stay together and hopefully things start turning.”
Saturday’s visitors will undoubtedly arrive as favourites, but Hoddesdon will hope the combination of home conditions, fighting spirit and perhaps a little bit of “Animal magic” can help produce a much-needed result. And if Charlie Tackley starts seeing the ball like beach balls again, Lowfield could yet witness something special.
