Hoddesdon Win Takes Us 2nd!

On a warm summers day, following our lengthy journey we arrived in the beautiful Bedfordshire town of Ampthill and were greeted by a spectacular classical musical festival ... We were pleasantly surprised to see Ampthill's ground run a muck with colts and their parents enjoying the morning sunshine.

After a well intended warm up our skipper won the toss and elected to take the field with the hope of dismantling the home team's batting line up and getting back to our club for our own evenings festivities. However initially things did not go to plan as the wicket played better than it looked and the Ampthill batsmen took full advantage of any loose balls and the extremely short boundaries.

The Ampthill top 4 all cashed in to make 50's and we were staring down the barrel at a 300+ total... Lunch was taken and after a gorgeous lunch, pudding and tea lady we were given a second wind and with excellent bowling from Jamie Curtis and Rob Walters we decimated the opposition batting line up taking 4 wickets each. The target was 286 off of 58 overs..

Both Rob Walters and Jimmy Achillea took to the crease and with the wicket being good but enabling the new ball to swing and seam started with an intent on batting for a long period of time. Unfortunately Achillea fell in the teens which brought Broodryk to the crease, who in recent weeks has looked in great touch and brutal once established. Both Walters and Broodryk batted with intent and good running between the wickets to take us over 100. Walters then made the fateful mistake of taking a quick single to the overseas pro and was run out for a well made 65.

Clarke joined Broodryk at the crease and continued to score well off both opposition bowlers keeping the run rate in check until Clarke was dismissed on 20. Curtis came and went, which then brought an aged Brown to the crease. Brown and Broodryk took the fight to the opposition scoring boundaries at will and intelligently ticking over the scoreboard taking singles in the ring.

Broodryk became the only overseas player to get a league hundred in over 10 years for Hoddesdon 1st XI with a very fine 118* and won the game with ease in the end with 5 overs remaining.. There is more to come from our very talented Broodryk and we cant wait to see it!

We look forward to a trip to Botany Bay this Saturday and hope to continue our recent form and with a fair wind bring back another 30 points!
