Hoddesdon Cricket Club’s First XI return to Lowfield on Saturday for a hugely attractive Championship Division clash against Shenley Village, with Rob Walters’ side looking to continue a superb late-season surge and keep alive their outside hopes of forcing their way into the top two. It will also be an emotional afternoon for the long-serving captain, with Walters preparing for the penultimate match of his remarkable 15-year tenure at the helm and a celebration planned in the clubhouse afterwards involving friends, team-mates and one or two surprise guests.

Four consecutive league victories have transformed the complexion of Hoddesdon’s season. Having beaten Preston by seven wickets, Luton Town & Indians by the same margin, Hemel Hempstead by 50 runs and then Welwyn Garden City by just seven runs last weekend, Hoddesdon arrive at Saturday’s fixture in fourth place with 286 points and with genuine momentum behind them. Shenley, though, provide another considerable test. They sit immediately above Hoddesdon in third on 294 points, just eight clear, meaning victory at Lowfield would guarantee Walters’ men finish the weekend above their visitors and could potentially leave them breathing down the necks of second-placed Sawbridgeworth heading into the final round. North Mymms remain well clear at the summit on 368 points, while Sawbridgeworth occupy second with 322. Shenley follow on 294, Hoddesdon have 286 and Luton Town & Indians are fifth on 277, so while catching the top two remains a difficult assignment with time running out, Hoddesdon have given themselves every reason to keep looking upwards rather than over their shoulders.

The Table As It Stands

HODDESDON RIDING A FOUR-GAME WINNING RUN

The manner of Hoddesdon’s recent victories has perhaps been as encouraging as the results themselves, because they have been achieved in very different circumstances. Preston were comprehensively dispatched after Himesh Ramanayake produced the extraordinary figures of 7-69 and Walters made 111, while James Mitchell’s unbeaten 106 then inspired the seven-wicket victory at Luton. Against Hemel, Hoddesdon piled up 297-8 before defending it by 50 runs, Mitchell reaching another century with 101 and Usmaan Shafi making 67. Last weekend brought something completely different at Digswell Park, where Hoddesdon found themselves in serious trouble at 39-6 before Gagan Dissanayake produced a magnificent 91 and Todd Sturdy a vital 55 to drag the visitors to 195.

That total initially appeared modest, but Hoddesdon’s bowlers and fielders turned the match into a gripping contest. Welwyn were eventually bowled out for 188, with Himesh, Harry Mason and Om Thakeria taking two wickets apiece and Walters claiming another, while three run-outs underlined the pressure created by an energetic fielding performance.

Walters believes the variety of those victories says plenty about the character that has developed within the group.

“The pleasing thing is that the last four wins haven’t all looked the same,” said the skipper. “We’ve had games where the top order has dominated, games where the bowlers have taken control and then last week we were 39-6 and somehow found a way to win. That tells you there is a lot of belief in the side at the moment, because different people are putting their hands up when we need them.”

SHENLEY ARRIVE IN FORM

Shenley will hardly arrive short of confidence themselves. They have won three of their last four league matches, including consecutive emphatic victories over Redbourn and Dunstable, and their ability to produce substantial totals makes them one of the division’s most dangerous batting units. On 15 August they amassed a formidable 379-9 against Redbourn before winning by 135 runs. They followed that by making 249 against Dunstable last weekend and dismissing their opponents for 153, sealing another convincing 96-run success. Their only defeat in that recent four-match sequence came against runaway leaders North Mymms, when Shenley made a competitive 272-9 before the league leaders reached 273-5. Before that, Shenley had produced one of their finest chases of the season at Sawbridgeworth, reaching 313-9 to win by one wicket after the hosts had declared on 310-4.

Shenley Have Won 3 Of Their Last 4

The statistics show why Shenley have remained firmly in the upper reaches of the table throughout the campaign. Seamus Meaker leads their run-scoring with 557 at an average of 32.76, while Morgan Stanley has accumulated 456 and Ali Naqvi 455, giving the visitors a strong core of experienced, consistent performers. Further down the order there is considerable firepower. Will Thomson has 389 runs including an unbeaten 104, Kris Nissen has 329 at an average of 47 and an explosive strike rate above 113, while Graydon Orchard has 306 and a season-best 109. Nish Selvakumar is another who cannot be overlooked, having made 285 runs at 40.71 and recorded Shenley’s highest individual score of the campaign with an unbeaten 112. With seven players having passed 280 runs, the visitors are clearly not reliant upon a single batsman.

PATHAK LEADS A SERIOUS SHENLEY ATTACK

If Shenley’s batting depth is impressive, their bowling numbers are equally eye-catching. Droo Pathak has been the standout performer with 41 wickets from 225 overs at an average of 23.41, with two five-wicket hauls and best figures of 6-15. Pathak arrives at Lowfield in particularly good touch after taking 5-49 against Dunstable last weekend. He is comfortably Shenley’s leading wicket-taker and will be the obvious danger to a Hoddesdon batting line-up that will be determined not to repeat the top-order problems suffered at Welwyn. Ali Naqvi has taken 23 wickets, while Matt Stear has 20 at 27.70 and owns another of Shenley’s best individual returns with 6-28. Matthew Fretter has 13 wickets and notably recorded 4-25 against Hoddesdon earlier in the campaign, while Kris Nissen’s 11 wickets give the visitors yet another useful option.

“We know Shenley are a very good side and the table tells you that,” Walters added. “They bat a long way down and Pathak has had an outstanding year with the ball, so there are threats everywhere. But we’re playing well ourselves and I’d much rather go into a game like this with the confidence we’ve built over the last month.”

HODDESDON’S OWN NUMBERS TELL A STRONG STORY

Hoddesdon have plenty of statistical ammunition of their own, led by Walters, Ramanayake and Mitchell. Walters has enjoyed another outstanding campaign with the bat and went into last weekend with 828 runs, four centuries and a top score of 158, before adding six at Welwyn. Ramanayake has provided extraordinary consistency throughout the middle order. His figures before the Welwyn game stood at 738 runs from 16 innings, seven of them not outs, giving him an average of 82, and his nine half-centuries demonstrate just how regularly he has made significant contributions. Mitchell has rapidly become another major force in the order. Despite playing fewer First XI matches than many around him, he has accumulated 447 runs at 63.86, with two centuries in his last three innings for the side, including 106 not out at Luton and 101 against Hemel.

Rob Walters Will Lead His Side Out For The Penultimate Time

James Curtis has 375 runs with a century and two fifties, while the emergence of different contributors further down the order has proved crucial during the winning run. Last Saturday was the perfect example, with Dissanayake and Sturdy combining for the partnership that rescued Hoddesdon from 39-6 and ultimately provided enough runs for the bowlers to defend.

Himesh remains the outstanding figure with the ball as well. He had 31 league wickets before taking another two at Welwyn, while Om Thakeria moved beyond the 20-wicket mark with his own two-wicket contribution and the returning Harry Mason immediately demonstrated how important he can be by conceding only 21 from his ten overs and taking two wickets on his comeback from injury. That gives Hoddesdon a wonderfully varied attack for Saturday. Ramanayake’s control, Mason’s spin, Thakeria’s wicket-taking ability and the options offered by Curtis and Walters give the hosts several different routes through what is unquestionably a strong Shenley batting order.

AN EMOTIONAL LOWFIELD OCCASION

Away from the league table, there will inevitably be added significance surrounding Walters this weekend. After 15 seasons leading the First XI, Saturday represents his penultimate match as captain, and his final one at home, and there will be an opportunity afterwards for players, former players, supporters and friends to gather in the Lowfield clubhouse and celebrate an extraordinary period of service. There are also understood to be one or two surprise guests during the evening, although Walters will be determined to ensure sentiment does not distract from the cricket itself. With fourth playing third, a possible top-two finish still mathematically alive and four consecutive victories behind his side, there is still plenty of competitive business to attend to first.

“I’m obviously aware that there will be a few emotions around the day, and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who is coming down to support,” Walters said. “But I want the lads focused on the game because we’ve put ourselves in a really good position. We might need a lot to go our way to get into the top two, but while there is still a chance we will keep pushing, and regardless of where we finish I want us to end the season as strongly as we possibly can.”

A fifth straight victory would certainly achieve that and would move Hoddesdon above Shenley with one league game remaining. Whatever happens elsewhere, Lowfield should provide an ideal setting for one of the most compelling fixtures of the Championship Division weekend and another memorable chapter in the closing stages of Walters’ captaincy.
