MITCHELL MASTERCLASS FIRES HODDESDON TO SUPERB LUTON VICTORY

Hoddesdon Cricket Club’s First XI produced one of their finest all-round performances of the season on Saturday, defeating high-flying Luton Town & Indians by seven wickets at Wardown Park to continue their climb up the Championship Division table. In searing summer conditions, a superbly disciplined bowling effort restricted the hosts to 211 before James Mitchell capped an extraordinary week with a magnificent unbeaten century to guide Hoddesdon home with plenty to spare.

The victory earned Rob Walters’ side the maximum 30 points and lifted Hoddesdon into fifth place, just five points behind Luton and eight behind third-placed Shenley Village. After the convincing success over Preston seven days earlier, back-to-back wins have given the First XI real momentum at an important stage of the campaign. Mitchell was deservedly named the club’s Greene King Green Jacket winner after carrying his bat for a brilliant 106 not out from 118 deliveries. His innings contained eight fours and five sixes and came only days after his astonishing 288-run performance for Middlesex Pathway XI, completing a week the young Hoddesdon batter will surely remember for a very long time.

Hoddesdon Collected All 30 Points

Head of Cricket Louis Purves was full of praise for both Mitchell and the wider team effort. “James has had an absolutely extraordinary week, and to back up what he did for Middlesex with a match-winning hundred for Hoddesdon says so much about his ability and temperament,” he said. “He never panicked, he trusted his game and he made sure he was there at the end, which is exactly what you want from a top-order batter.”

Bowlers Set the Tone in the Heat

Luton won the toss and elected to bat first, but Hoddesdon’s bowlers immediately settled into a disciplined rhythm despite the very hot conditions. The hosts were made to work for every run, and the visitors maintained control throughout a 60-over innings in which Luton were eventually dismissed for 211. The figures tell the story of an outstanding collective effort. Hoddesdon bowled 60 overs without conceding a single wide or no-ball, while 13 of those overs were maidens, a remarkable level of control in the heat and on an afternoon when concentration could easily have slipped.

Walters led from the front with the ball, returning excellent figures of three for 46 from 17 overs and sending down five maidens. His economy rate of just 2.71 ensured Luton were never able to build sustained momentum, and the captain repeatedly applied pressure as the hosts attempted to establish partnerships. Om Thakeria was equally effective, claiming three for 34 from nine overs. His wickets arrived at important moments and prevented Luton’s middle and lower order from launching the kind of late acceleration that can quickly change a timed-game total. James Curtis supplied another huge shift, bowling 20 overs for just 55 runs and picking up two wickets. Five maidens and an economy rate of 2.75 underline just how difficult he was to score from, while Himesh Ramanayake produced 11 overs for only 31 runs with three maidens despite finishing without a wicket.

Om Thakeria Claimed Three Wickets

Walters was understandably delighted with the discipline of his attack. “That was probably the thing I was most pleased with,” he said. “It was seriously hot out there, but the lads kept coming back, kept hitting their areas and never let the game drift. To bowl 60 overs without a wide or a no-ball is a fantastic effort and shows the level of concentration everyone had.”

Luton Made to Scrap for Every Run

Luton’s innings never really broke free from Hoddesdon’s grip. Openers Dhaval Naik and Abdul Wahid both made 22, putting together 50 for the first wicket, but their progress was deliberately slow as Walters, Curtis and Himesh refused to offer easy scoring opportunities. Wahid faced 46 deliveries for his 22, while Naik used 55 balls, and Hoddesdon’s patience eventually brought reward. Walters removed both openers, trapping Naik leg before and having Wahid caught by Himesh, before Curtis accounted for Umar Siddique Khan for nine. Mustafa Haroon top-scored for Luton with a patient 38 from 83 balls, striking five boundaries. His dismissal to Thakeria was an important breakthrough, and from there Hoddesdon continued to chip away at the middle order rather than allowing any one batter to dominate.

Sajjad Homyoon made nine before becoming Walters’ third wicket, while Manpreet Singh contributed 22 from 51 deliveries before Curtis struck again. Devender Singh briefly increased the tempo with 16 from 16 balls, but Hoddesdon’s fielding remained sharp and two run-outs added further reward to the excellent bowling. Devansh Kumar Sharma made 28 from 34 balls and Divyesh Patel added 14, but Thakeria cleaned up the lower order to ensure the hosts were all out for 211 from the final over of their allocation. Luton’s 24 extras consisted entirely of byes and leg byes, meaning Hoddesdon’s bowlers did not gift the home side a single run through wides or no-balls.

Purves felt that control had been crucial. “It is very easy in conditions like that to lose your shape, especially late in long spells, but the bowlers were superb,” he said. “Rob, Om and Curtis got the wickets, Himesh was incredibly economical, and the whole group stayed switched on in the field. Restricting a side like Luton to 211 after they chose to bat gave us a very clear opportunity.”

Early Setbacks in the Chase

Hoddesdon’s reply did not begin perfectly, with Usmaan Shafi dismissed for five at 15 for one. Walters then followed for 18, having struck a four and two sixes in his 25-ball stay, leaving the visitors 37 for two and giving Luton an early glimpse of a route back into the contest.

Mitchell, however, immediately settled into his work and refused to allow the scoreboard pressure to grow. Fresh from his remarkable midweek exploits for Middlesex Pathway XI, he looked composed from the outset and gradually took ownership of the chase. Curtis joined him and the pair constructed a hugely important third-wicket partnership worth 91 runs. Curtis played the perfect supporting role, making 49 from 85 balls with six fours and one six, while Mitchell rotated the strike and punished anything loose. Their partnership carried Hoddesdon from 37 for two to 128 for three and removed much of Luton’s early optimism. Curtis was eventually dismissed one short of a deserved half-century, caught off the bowling of Devansh Kumar Sharma, but by then the visitors were firmly in control.

Mitchell Finishes the Job

Himesh joined Mitchell with 84 runs still required and the pair calmly completed the chase without further alarm. Himesh finished unbeaten on 28 from 46 balls, striking three boundaries, while Mitchell continued to grow in authority as he closed in on three figures. The century arrived during an innings that blended patience with power. Mitchell faced 118 balls in total, striking eight fours and five sixes, and remained unbeaten as Hoddesdon reached 214 for three from 47.5 overs. His unbroken partnership with Himesh was worth 86 and ensured the visitors crossed the line with seven wickets intact and more than 12 overs unused. For a player who had spent much of the week at the crease, the concentration required to produce another long, decisive innings was especially impressive.

“James was outstanding,” Walters said. “He came in with us two down fairly early and just looked completely in control. Curtis batted really well with him, Himesh finished it off nicely, but Mitch was the constant throughout and fully deserved his hundred and the Green Jacket.”

Luton’s most successful bowler was Devansh Kumar Sharma, who took two for 74 from 17.5 overs. Divyesh Patel claimed the other wicket and bowled economically for one for 25 from eight overs, but Hoddesdon’s middle order never allowed the hosts to generate the cluster of wickets they needed.

Green Jacket for Mitchell

Mitchell’s unbeaten 106 made him an obvious contender for the Greene King Green Jacket, and he ultimately received the award after a performance which perfectly capped his outstanding week. His century also represented another significant step in a First XI season in which his confidence and influence have continued to grow. The award carries the backing of Greene King and Level Head IPA, whose support continues to add another enjoyable element to matchdays across the club. With Mitchell now producing major performances both for Hoddesdon and at Middlesex Pathway level, there is considerable excitement surrounding his development.

Purves added: “Everyone at the club is incredibly proud of James. We have watched him develop, we know how much work he puts into his cricket, and performances like this are a reward for that. He has a very bright future, but what matters to us is that he remains such a grounded lad who loves playing for Hoddesdon.”

Hoddesdon Climb to Fifth

The result has significantly improved Hoddesdon’s position in the Championship Division. Walters’ side now sit fifth with 236 points from 14 matches, having recorded six victories, five defeats and two losing draws alongside one cancelled fixture. Luton remain immediately above Hoddesdon in fourth place on 241 points, meaning the gap between the sides has been reduced to just five. Shenley Village are third with 244, only eight points ahead of Hoddesdon, while Welwyn Garden City have slipped to sixth on 221. At the top, North Mymms continue to lead with 352 points, followed by Sawbridgeworth on 291. Dunstable sit seventh on 207, with Redbourn, Hemel Hempstead Town and Preston completing the bottom three positions. The significance for Hoddesdon is the growing congestion around third, fourth and fifth. Two consecutive victories have brought Walters’ side right back into that group, and the manner of both successes provides plenty of encouragement heading into the closing weeks of the season.

“We have put together two very good wins now, and that gives everyone belief,” Walters said. “There is still a lot of cricket to play, so we are not getting carried away, but we have given ourselves an opportunity to finish the season strongly. We are playing some good cricket and enjoying it, and that is exactly where we want to be.”

With Mitchell celebrating a superb hundred, Walters and Thakeria sharing six wickets, Curtis contributing with both bat and ball and the entire attack showing outstanding discipline in punishing heat, Hoddesdon left Wardown Park with maximum points and another hugely positive performance behind them. The First XI now head into the next challenge sitting fifth in the table and firmly looking upwards.
