Hoddesdon Cricket Club’s First XI travel to Wardown Park on Saturday for a demanding Championship Division fixture against third-placed Luton Town & Indians, buoyed by last weekend’s convincing seven-wicket victory over Preston and strengthened by the return of wicketkeeper Will Steward. Play begins at 11am, with Rob Walters’ side looking to build on one of their most complete performances of the summer and close the gap on the teams immediately above them.

The hosts enter the weekend in excellent form and occupy third place with 236 points, level with Shenley Village but ahead in the table. Hoddesdon sit sixth on 206 points, only seven behind fifth-placed Welwyn Garden City and 30 behind both Luton and Shenley, meaning a positive result at Wardown Park could have a significant effect on the shape of the upper half. Luton's most recent success was particularly emphatic, as they amassed 315 for six before dismissing Dunstable Town for 160 to complete a 155-run victory and collect the maximum 30 points. Hoddesdon’s own form has been a touch up and down, but last weekend’s performance against Preston offered a timely reminder of the quality within the side. Himesh Ramanayake claimed seven for 69 before Walters struck 111 and Usmaan Shafi added 75, allowing Hoddesdon to chase 269 for the loss of only three wickets with almost 12 overs remaining.

Victory On Saturday Could See Hoddesdon Climb The Table Once More

“We needed that performance, not only because of the points but because of how we won the game,” said Walters. “We bowled with discipline, created chances and then controlled the chase from the beginning. Luton will be a different challenge away from home, but we should travel there with confidence rather than simply hoping to compete.”

Saturday will be the first time the teams have met on the field this season, despite the reverse fixture originally being scheduled at Lowfield on June 6. Heavy rain on the Friday night continued into Saturday morning and left the ground unplayable, forcing the match to be cancelled before either side had the opportunity to test itself against the other. That abandonment means there is no recent head-to-head evidence from the current campaign to use as a guide. Hoddesdon therefore travel to Luton knowing that their preparation must be based on their own strengths, the hosts’ league position and the clear momentum Luton have developed during the second half of the summer. “They are third for a reason and their recent results show how dangerous they are,” Walters said. “We are not going to pretend we know everything about every individual when their statistics cover several different competitions. What we do know is that they are winning games, they have just scored more than 300 and they will expect to be strong at home.”

Hoddesdon’s own numbers offer plenty of encouragement, beginning with another prolific season from the captain. Walters has scored 809 runs from 14 innings at an average of 62.23, with four centuries, one half-century and a top score of 158. His strike rate of 90.59 demonstrates that those runs have not been accumulated cautiously or at the expense of the team’s scoring rate. Walters has repeatedly combined the patience required for timed cricket with the ability to accelerate when the match situation demands it, and four of Hoddesdon’s five highest individual scores this season belong to the captain. Those innings include his 158 against Sawbridgeworth, 124 in the remarkable defeat at Preston, 111 during last weekend’s successful chase and 102 against Dunstable earlier in the campaign. The range of situations in which those centuries were scored is significant, because Walters has delivered while setting totals, chasing substantial targets and rebuilding after early wickets.mHis partnership with Shafi against Preston was another example of his influence. Their opening stand of 127 established the platform for a comfortable chase and now ranks as Hoddesdon’s third-highest partnership of the season.

Rob Walters Has Led From The Front In All Disciplines This Season

“There has been a lot of responsibility on the top order, and I have been pleased with the way we have generally approached it,” Walters explained. “The important thing is that the runs contribute towards winning games. Individual numbers are satisfying, but the innings last Saturday meant more because we completed the job and took 30 points.”

Himesh’s season has been equally outstanding, and his figures underline why he has become such an essential part of the side. He has scored exactly 700 runs from 14 innings and has been dismissed only eight times, producing an exceptional average of 87.50. Although he is yet to convert one of those innings into a century, Himesh has passed 50 on nine occasions and recorded a highest score of 93 not out. His consistency through the middle order has frequently rescued or transformed innings, while a strike rate of 72.54 reflects his ability to build substantial partnerships and manage difficult passages.

The partnerships table demonstrates his influence particularly clearly. Himesh shared Hoddesdon’s highest stand of the season, a 169-run fourth-wicket partnership with Walters against Sawbridgeworth, and also added 131 with Shafi for the fourth wicket against Shenley Village. A further unbeaten stand of 112 with Steward against Welwyn Garden City sits fourth on the list. Those combinations show that Himesh has successfully batted alongside the side’s leading run-scorers, the attacking top order and the lower middle order, adapting his approach to suit the circumstances.

His contribution with the ball makes the overall campaign even more remarkable. Himesh leads the attack with 29 wickets at an average of 19.00, while his economy rate of 3.61 is the best among Hoddesdon’s regular bowlers. Last weekend’s seven for 69 is comfortably the leading bowling performance of the season and followed two separate four-for-30 returns against Sawbridgeworth. Across 152.3 overs, Himesh has delivered 24 maidens and conceded only 551 runs, carrying an enormous workload without sacrificing accuracy.

“Himesh has been outstanding all year and the numbers speak for themselves,” Walters said. “To score 700 runs and lead the wicket-taking list is a huge contribution. He has been consistent, he stays calm under pressure and last Saturday showed that he can take a game away from the opposition in one spell.”

Shafi’s 75 against Preston moved him to 372 runs for the season and supplied exactly the kind of positive start Hoddesdon will hope to reproduce at Wardown Park. He owns the highest strike rate among the team’s top five run-scorers at 97.13, highlighting his ability to place pressure on bowlers from the opening overs. His campaign includes a century against Shenley, with a highest score of 113, alongside one additional half-century. An average of 26.57 does not fully reflect the impact of his best innings, particularly when his attacking approach has allowed Walters and Himesh to settle into longer stays at the crease. Jamie Curtis has scored 273 runs from nine innings at an average of 34.13, with a century and a half-century already to his name. His strike rate of 90.10 is almost identical to Walters’, and his 27 against Preston provided a valuable second-wicket partnership during the chase. Curtis also offers considerable value with the ball, having taken 13 wickets at an average of 29.00. His best return of five for 69 remains the side’s second-best performance of the season, and an economy rate of 4.57 gives Walters another bowler capable of controlling long spells.

James Mitchell travels to Luton on the back of an extraordinary midweek performance for the Middlesex Pathway XI. The Hoddesdon youngster amassed 288 runs during the two-day fixture, a monumental contribution which underlined his technique, concentration and rapidly growing reputation. Mitchell has already made an impressive impact in Hoddesdon’s First XI, scoring 240 runs from seven innings at an average of 40.00. His highest score of 57 came in difficult circumstances against Sawbridgeworth, while his unbeaten 43 helped complete the chase against Preston after Walters had taken the hosts to the brink of victory.

“Mitch’s week has been incredible and everyone at Hoddesdon is proud of him,” Walters said. “Scoring 288 at that level is a serious achievement, but what has impressed us most is how grounded he remains. He will arrive at Luton tired after a lot of cricket, but also full of confidence and eager to contribute.”

Andrew Lewis has accumulated 148 runs from nine innings and has been dismissed only five times, giving him an average of 29.60. His unbeaten 59 is one of the side’s important lower-middle-order contributions, and his experience remains particularly valuable when Hoddesdon lose wickets in clusters. Steward returns after missing the Preston victory while moving house and slots back into the side as wicketkeeper. He has made 139 runs this season, including an unbeaten 61, and his ability to bat in different positions provides Walters with flexibility when constructing the order. Rob Jones has played only five matches but has made an encouraging impact, scoring 95 runs from four innings at an average of 47.50. His highest score of 51 not out demonstrates the depth available to Hoddesdon, while Johnny Munday has contributed 120 runs and continues to offer energy and reliability in the field.

The presence of Gagan Dissanayake and Om Thakeria extends the batting beyond the recognised top order. Hoddesdon have required contributions from across the XI throughout the campaign, and the successful teams in timed cricket are often those capable of turning 220 into 260 or surviving the final overs to secure a result.

Harry Mason remains second on Hoddesdon’s wicket-taking list with 19 at an average of 23.84, despite his long-term injury having ruled him out during recent weeks. His absence has required others to accept greater responsibility, particularly Om, Curtis and Walters. Om has sent down 117.1 overs, taking 17 wickets with best figures of four for 63. His economy rate of 5.52 reflects the attacking role he has often been asked to perform, while the volume of overs delivered demonstrates the trust placed in him by the captain. Curtis’s 13 wickets have included the five-wicket haul against Redbourn, while Walters has contributed eight wickets from almost 99 overs. The captain’s economy rate of 4.57 and 14 maidens show that his bowling value extends well beyond the wickets column, particularly when Hoddesdon need to slow a scoring rate or maintain pressure before the second new spell begins. The selected attack contains no Charlie Tackley this weekend as he represents the 2nd xi, despite the young bowler having taken four wickets at an average of 28.00. Himesh, Om, Curtis and Walters are therefore likely to provide the bulk of the overs, with Dissanayake and other part-time options available should conditions require a change of method.

Steward’s return is significant not only for the batting but also for Hoddesdon’s work behind the stumps. He leads the side’s fielding statistics with ten wicketkeeping victims, comprising seven catches and three stumpings. Dissanayake has recorded seven total victims, including three catches as wicketkeeper and four catches in the field. With Steward taking the gloves at Luton, Gagan can return to the outfield, where his athleticism and safe hands remain important. Himesh has taken six catches, while Munday has five catches and one run-out. Curtis, Mitchell and Om have each contributed five total fielding wickets, with Mitchell’s figure including two run-outs and Curtis and Om each adding one. Those numbers show that Hoddesdon have not depended exclusively on conventional catches. Their ground fielding has produced several dismissals, and sharp work around the square could again become decisive on a large ground where batters may be tempted to challenge boundary riders and turn singles into twos.

Will Steward Returns To Keep Wicket This Saturday

Saturday’s contest represents an opportunity for Hoddesdon to demonstrate that the Preston victory was the beginning of renewed momentum rather than an isolated result. They are close enough to Welwyn Garden City to climb another place quickly, while victory over third-placed Luton would draw them significantly nearer to the leading cluster. Luton will begin as confident hosts after their commanding defeat of Dunstable. Hoddesdon, however, travel with one of the division’s leading all-round performer in Himesh, one of its most prolific century-makers in Walters and one of the league's most in-form young batters following Mitchell’s extraordinary midweek exploits.

“We know this will be one of the tougher away games, but it is also exactly the kind of fixture we should look forward to,” Walters concluded. “We have quality throughout the side, Will is back with the gloves and several players are coming into the game after strong performances. The aim is to play with the same discipline and clarity we showed against Preston, then see where that takes us.”
