CURTIS AND DEBUTANT TACKLEY STAR AS HODDESDON STAY TOP WITH EMPHATIC WIN AT HEMEL

Hoddesdon Cricket Club strengthened their grip on top spot in the Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League Championship Division on Saturday with a convincing seven-wicket victory over Hemel Hempstead Town CC at Heath Park.

On a warm afternoon in west Hertfordshire, Rob Walters' side produced another disciplined and professional display to collect 30 valuable points and extend their lead at the summit of the table. After winning the toss and electing to field first, Hoddesdon bowled Hemel out for just 115 before calmly chasing down the target inside 34 overs thanks to an unbeaten half-century from James Curtis and a measured partnership with overseas all-rounder Himesh Ramanayake. The result leaves Hoddesdon sitting proudly at the top of the Championship Division with 122 points, ten clear of nearest challengers North Mymms, and continues what has already been an impressive campaign for a side that continues to find different match-winners every week.

Early Breakthroughs Set The Tone

Captain Rob Walters had little hesitation in asking Hemel Hempstead to bat first after winning the toss, and his bowlers immediately justified the decision. Conditions at Heath Park were excellent for cricket, with sunshine breaking through during the morning and temperatures steadily climbing throughout the day. Despite the pleasant weather, Hoddesdon's attack found movement and discipline from the very first over.

The visitors quickly established control through a relentless display of accurate bowling. Hemel's openers found scoring difficult against a disciplined new-ball spell, and the pressure eventually told. Charlie Tackley, making his eagerly anticipated First XI debut, announced himself in style by removing Brett Penny for 8. The young seamer showed admirable composure and control, immediately looking comfortable at this level. At the other end, Walters himself was causing problems and soon accounted for Hemish Ilangaratne. With wickets falling and runs difficult to come by, Hemel found themselves under increasing pressure.

By 12:45pm the home side had crawled to just 60 for 5 from 28 overs, with Hoddesdon firmly in control of proceedings. Every bowler contributed to a suffocating display that gave Hemel virtually no opportunity to build momentum. Speaking afterwards, Walters praised the attitude shown by his side in the field.

"We spoke before the game about being ruthless and not allowing them any easy periods," said the captain.

"The lads executed the plans brilliantly. We bowled in the right areas all day and backed it up with excellent fielding. Once we got ahead in the game, nobody took their foot off the gas."

Debut Delight For Tackley

One of the major talking points of the afternoon was the performance of First XI debutant Charlie Tackley.

The young bowler showed no signs of nerves and delivered an excellent spell that earned him figures of 2 for 12 from five overs. His economy rate of 2.40 highlighted the control he maintained throughout his spell, while his two wickets helped ensure Hemel never escaped the pressure Hoddesdon were applying. Tackley's first wicket removed opener Brett Penny, while his second came when he dismissed Oliver West for 10. For a young player stepping into Championship Division cricket, it was exactly the sort of debut that players dream about.

Walters was full of praise for the youngster afterwards.

"Charlie was superb," he said.

"You wouldn't have known it was his debut. He looked completely at home out there. He bowled with confidence, hit his areas consistently and deserved every bit of success he got. We're all delighted for him."

Bowlers Share The Spoils

While Tackley's contribution was one of the highlights, the victory was built on a complete team bowling performance. Himesh Ramanayake once again demonstrated why he has become such an influential figure for Hoddesdon this season. The Sri Lankan all-rounder delivered another masterclass in control and patience, returning figures of 2 for 25 from an outstanding 16-over spell that included seven maidens. Harry Mason was equally impressive. Bowling with excellent rhythm and control, Mason collected 2 for 34 from his 16 overs while conceding barely more than two runs an over.

As Hemel attempted to rebuild through Freddie Lowe and Lucas Bertin, Hoddesdon simply refused to loosen their grip on the contest. Lowe top-scored with 24 while Bertin made 20, but neither innings was able to generate meaningful momentum. Every time a partnership threatened to develop, Hoddesdon found a breakthrough.

The star performer with the ball was ultimately James Curtis. Introduced later in the innings, Curtis ripped through the lower order with remarkable efficiency. His figures of 3 for 4 from just 3.3 overs underline the impact he made, removing Lucas Bertin, Tom Willetts and Carter Botha to finish the innings. Hemel were eventually dismissed for 115 in 48.3 overs, with Hoddesdon collecting all ten wickets and allowing very few scoring opportunities throughout the innings. The scoreboard told its own story. Hemel's batsmen managed only 84 runs between them, while 31 extras represented more than a quarter of the total.

By 2:30pm, the innings was over and Hoddesdon were firmly in the driving seat.

Calm Heads In The Chase

Despite the modest target, Walters knew there was still work to do.

The captain and Usman Shafi opened the innings positively and looked to settle any nerves early. Walters struck five boundaries in a fluent 25 from 34 balls and appeared in good touch before becoming the second wicket to fall at 32. Shafi had earlier departed for 3, leaving Hoddesdon 32 for 2 and briefly giving the home side a glimmer of hope. Any thoughts of a dramatic turnaround, however, were quickly extinguished. Jamie Curtis and Himesh Ramanayake produced a partnership of maturity and patience that completely removed any tension from the chase.

Curtis was magnificent.

Having already starred with the ball, he delivered a composed and authoritative unbeaten 62 from 86 deliveries. The innings contained two fours and four sixes, but perhaps more impressive than the boundaries was the manner in which he controlled the innings. He assessed conditions perfectly, rotated the strike intelligently and punished loose deliveries whenever they arrived. Alongside him, Ramanayake provided the ideal foil. His unbeaten 24 from 71 balls may not have been spectacular, but it was precisely what the situation required. The overseas player soaked up pressure, occupied the crease and ensured there would be no late drama. The pair guided Hoddesdon home without further loss. When the winning runs arrived at 5pm, Hoddesdon had reached 116 for 3 from 33.4 overs to complete another comprehensive victory.

Curtis Produces A Complete Performance

While several players could lay claim to man-of-the-match honours, James Curtis undoubtedly produced one of the most influential all-round displays of the season. His figures of 3 for 4 helped finish off Hemel's innings before his unbeaten 62 guided Hoddesdon safely home. The innings was particularly impressive given the situation. Although the target was relatively small, early wickets can often create uncertainty in low chases. Curtis ensured that never became an issue. His partnership with Ramanayake demonstrated excellent game awareness and maturity, steadily wearing down the opposition while keeping the scoreboard moving.

"Jamo was outstanding," said the skipper.

"He impacted the game in both innings. The wickets he took were important because they prevented Hemel from adding any late runs, and then with the bat he was calm, composed and completely in control. It was a really high-quality performance."

Hoddesdon Remain The Team To Catch

The victory maintains Hoddesdon's excellent position at the top of the Championship Division standings. With 122 points from their opening fixtures, they remain clear of North Mymms in second place and continue to build momentum as the season progresses. Perhaps most encouraging for the club is the variety of contributors. One week it is Walters scoring heavily. Another week it is Ramanayake producing match-winning performances. This weekend it was Curtis and debutant Tackley who grabbed the headlines. That depth is proving to be one of Hoddesdon's greatest strengths. The bowling unit continues to operate with impressive discipline, while the batting line-up possesses both experience and flexibility. Most importantly, the side continues to collect points consistently.
