TOP OF THE TABLE HODDY HIT THE ROAD AS HEMEL TEST AWAITS

After a frustrating washout last weekend denied Hoddesdon CC the opportunity to strengthen their position at the summit of the Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League Championship Division, Rob Walters' men return to action on Saturday with an intriguing trip to Heath Park to face Hemel Hempstead Town CC.

The scheduled clash against Luton Town & Indians at Lowfield never got beyond the weather forecast as persistent rain swept across Hertfordshire, leaving players, officials and supporters alike disappointed. While the abandonment halted Hoddesdon's momentum, it also preserved their position at the top of the table heading into another important weekend in what is shaping up to be a fascinating Championship Division campaign.

Saturday's fixture gets underway at 11am and, with the weather forecast looking considerably more favourable, there is every expectation that a full day's cricket will be possible. Temperatures are expected to hover around the 20-degree mark with sunny intervals throughout the day, creating ideal conditions for what promises to be a highly competitive encounter.

HODDY STILL SETTING THE PACE

Despite the washout against Luton Town & Indians, Hoddesdon remain leaders of the Championship Division with 92 points from their opening five matches.

Rob Walters' side have won three of their completed fixtures, suffered just one defeat and collected valuable bonus points throughout the opening weeks of the campaign. Sawbridgeworth sit just three points behind on 89, while Luton Town & Indians and North Mymms are both lurking on 82 points, meaning there is little margin for error at the top of the standings. The encouraging aspect for Hoddesdon supporters is that the side have already demonstrated their ability to win matches in a variety of circumstances. There have been dominant victories, tense finishes and high-scoring encounters, all of which should serve them well as the season progresses.

Hemel Hempstead currently occupy sixth place with 68 points. While that may appear some distance behind the league leaders, they have shown enough quality already this season to prove they are capable of troubling any side in the division. Their recent form has been mixed. A comprehensive 145-run victory over Shenley Village demonstrated their potential, while they also recorded an impressive win over Dunstable Town last time out. However, defeats against North Mymms and Redbourn have prevented them from making a stronger push towards the promotion places. As a result, Saturday's fixture feels important for both clubs. Hoddesdon will be eager to maintain their place at the summit, while Hemel know a victory over the league leaders could significantly enhance their own ambitions.

CHARLIE TACKLEY GETS HIS CHANCE

One of the most pleasing stories within the Hoddesdon camp this weekend is the inclusion of Charlie Tackley.

The popular Sunday XI captain was due to make his long-awaited First XI debut last weekend before the weather intervened. Thankfully for Charlie, the selectors have shown faith once again and he retains his place in the squad for the trip to Hemel. Tackley has earned his opportunity through a combination of consistency, enthusiasm and performances throughout the club. His unbeaten century for the Sunday side earlier in the season served as another reminder of his ability, while his leadership qualities have also impressed around Lowfield.

The remainder of the side possesses a familiar and powerful look.

Captain Rob Walters continues to lead from the front and remains one of the most prolific batsmen in the entire division. Alongside him are Usmaan Shafi, James Curtis, Andrew Lewis and overseas star Himesh Ramanayake, providing a batting unit capable of posting substantial totals. Will Steward continues behind the stumps, while Harry Mason and Om Thakeria offer significant bowling threats. Todd Sturdy and Olly Maughan add further balance, giving Walters a number of options with both bat and ball. On paper, it is a side packed with quality, experience and depth.

WALTERS LEADING THE RUN CHARTS

As has become customary in recent seasons, Rob Walters continues to dominate opposition bowling attacks. The Hoddesdon skipper arrives at Heath Park with 491 runs from just seven innings at a remarkable average of 81.83. His tally includes three centuries, highlighted by scores of 158 against Sawbridgeworth, 124 against Preston and 102 against Dunstable. Those numbers are exceptional by any standard and underline the importance of Walters to Hoddesdon's success.

However, he has not been carrying the batting alone.

Overseas all-rounder Himesh Ramanayake has made a tremendous impact since arriving at the club. The Sri Lankan currently has 314 runs at an average above 52 and has already produced five half-centuries. His highest score of 81 came during the memorable victory at Sawbridgeworth and his partnership with Walters in that match remains one of the standout batting displays of the season. James Curtis has also made headlines. Although opportunities have been limited, he has already recorded a century and boasts 135 runs from just three innings.

Andrew Lewis has continued his development impressively. The talented youngster has demonstrated maturity well beyond his years whenever called upon. When those contributions are added to the hard-hitting capabilities of Shafi, Sturdy and the rest of the middle order, it becomes clear why Hoddesdon have accumulated some imposing totals during the opening weeks of the campaign.

HIMESH HEADS A STRONG BOWLING ATTACK

While the batting has attracted plenty of attention, Hoddesdon's bowling attack has quietly gone about its business with equal effectiveness.

Ramanayake currently leads the wicket-taking charts with ten wickets at an average below 20. His best figures of 4 for 30 came against Sawbridgeworth and demonstrated exactly why he was recruited as the club's overseas player. Harry Mason sits close behind with nine wickets and continues to improve with every outing. His excellent figures of 4 for 28 against Redbourn remain one of the bowling performances of the season so far. Om Thakeria has collected seven wickets, including outstanding figures of 3 for 54 during the victory over Dunstable, while Asif Mohammed and Walters himself have chipped in with useful contributions. The depth available to Walters means opposition batsmen rarely receive any respite. Every bowling change seems capable of producing a breakthrough and that has been a key factor behind Hoddesdon's strong start.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM HEMEL

Hemel's statistics reveal a side that possesses several dangerous individuals.

Maxwell Clark leads their batting charts with 587 runs and has already posted a remarkable 146 not out this season. Oliver West has accumulated 493 runs at an astonishing average approaching 100 and has struck two centuries already. Finley Clark and Freddie Lowe have also both registered centuries, highlighting the depth within the hosts' batting order. Those numbers suggest Hoddesdon's bowlers will need to be at their best from the opening ball.

With the ball, Jacob Hodgins is clearly the main threat. He has taken 27 wickets already this season, including two five-wicket hauls and best figures of 6 for 13. Sham Akhtar has also been prolific with 23 wickets, while Darren James and Carter Botha have reached double figures for the campaign. If Hoddesdon are to return home with maximum points, negotiating those bowling threats successfully will be crucial.

A BATTLE OF STRENGTHS

What makes this fixture particularly fascinating is the contrast between the two sides.

Hemel possess some outstanding individual batting statistics and several bowlers who have accumulated wickets consistently throughout the season. Hoddesdon, meanwhile, arrive with the division's leading run-scorer, a prolific overseas all-rounder, a balanced bowling attack and the confidence that comes from sitting at the top of the table. The league standings suggest Hoddesdon are favourites, but Championship Division cricket rarely follows the script. A good start with either bat or ball could prove decisive, while bonus points may once again play an important role in determining the outcome.

THE FINAL WORD

After a week spent watching rain clouds instead of cricket balls, Hoddesdon will simply be delighted to get back onto the field. The squad travels to Heath Park knowing victory would strengthen their grip on top spot and maintain the momentum built during an impressive opening phase of the season. With Charlie Tackley poised to finally make his First XI debut, Rob Walters continuing to churn out runs and Himesh Ramanayake contributing in all departments, there are plenty of reasons for optimism.

Hemel Hempstead will undoubtedly provide a stern examination, but league leaders do not reach the summit by accident. Saturday offers another opportunity for Hoddesdon to demonstrate exactly why they currently sit above everyone else in the Championship Division.

Go well, lads.
