Hoddesdon CC 1st XI return to Lowfield this Saturday afternoon looking to respond immediately to last weekend’s dramatic defeat at Preston as Rob Walters’ side host fellow promotion contenders Luton Town & Indians CC in what already feels like a significant early-season clash in the HPCL Championship Division.
With Hoddesdon currently sitting top of the table on 87 points, just three ahead of Sawbridgeworth and ten clear of Saturday’s visitors in third, there is little doubt this fixture carries genuine importance despite the season still being in its early stages. And after the extraordinary drama served up at Preston last weekend, another entertaining afternoon could well be in store.
Although Hoddesdon suffered their first league defeat of the 2026 campaign away from home, there remains a hugely positive feeling around the club heading into this weekend’s contest. Walters’ side produced another exceptional batting performance at The Recreation Ground, piling up 319/5 thanks largely to yet another stunning century from their skipper, before ultimately falling just short in a remarkable chase led by Preston opener James Doherty. The defeat ended Hoddesdon’s unbeaten start to the season, but it did little to dent confidence inside the dressing room. Far from it.
The green machine still collected 12 valuable points from the game and remain top of the Championship Division standings after four matches. More importantly, the performance reinforced the immense strength and depth currently developing within Walters’ squad.
“We took plenty of positives from last weekend,” Walters admitted ahead of Saturday’s fixture.
“Obviously losing always hurts, especially when you score 319, but we still played some outstanding cricket against a very good side. There’s no panic whatsoever. The lads have started the season brilliantly and we’re all looking forward to getting back out at Lowfield this weekend.”
A huge reason behind Hoddesdon’s impressive start has been the astonishing form of their captain.
Walters currently sits comfortably at the top of the club’s batting charts with 488 runs from six innings at a remarkable average of 81.33. His tally already includes three centuries this season, with scores of 158, 124 and 102 underlining the extraordinary consistency he continues to produce year after year. At times, the Hoddesdon skipper almost appears to be batting on a different surface to everyone else. His magnificent 124 at Preston last Saturday followed a superb 158 against Sawbridgeworth and another century against Dunstable Town. Quite simply, he remains one of the most dominant batters in Hertfordshire cricket.
But Hoddesdon’s batting strength extends far beyond their captain.
Sri Lankan overseas player Himesh Ramanayake has settled into life at Lowfield superbly and already looks one of the division’s standout all-rounders. Ramanayake has scored 303 runs at an average of 60.60 so far this season, including five half-centuries in five innings, while also leading the Hoddesdon bowling charts with 10 wickets at an economy rate of just 4.40. His impact has been immediate and immense. Whether accelerating late in innings with the bat or delivering key breakthroughs with the ball, the overseas star has quickly become a hugely influential figure inside Walters’ side.
Harry Mason has also continued his excellent start to the campaign with nine wickets so far, while Om Thakeria’s impressive season has yielded seven scalps. Asif Mohammed has chipped in with five wickets of his own, and Muhammad Hasan Ali continues to offer important control through the middle overs. The balance throughout the Hoddesdon side has been one of the most encouraging aspects of the opening month of the season.
Saturday’s fixture, however, will also carry another hugely important storyline for the club.
Young all-rounder Charlie Tackley has been selected to make his Hoddesdon CC 1st XI debut. It is a richly deserved opportunity for one of the club’s most popular and hard-working young players and there is genuine excitement around Lowfield ahead of his inclusion. Tackley has steadily climbed through Hoddesdon’s senior ranks in recent seasons and has impressed consistently for the 2nd XI throughout 2026. Still at the beginning of his senior cricket journey, he has already developed a strong reputation around the club for his superb attitude, commitment and enthusiasm. The youngster is also this season’s Sunday Friendly captain and already has a century to his name with the bat during the current campaign. His progress has certainly not gone unnoticed.
Indeed, Walters’ message to the squad earlier this week perhaps summed up perfectly how highly Tackley is regarded within the dressing room.
“Huge congrats to Charlie Tackley,” wrote the skipper in the players’ WhatsApp group.
“Not one person in here will say you don’t deserve this opportunity. You run in every Tuesday and Thursday, working hard with a superb attitude. Do what you’ve been doing and enjoy it. Seeing your smile when you heard the news tonight reminded me what this is all about.”
It was a message that resonated strongly across the club and highlighted exactly the sort of culture currently developing inside Hoddesdon’s senior setup. This is no token selection or sentimental gesture. Tackley has earned this opportunity through performances, hard work and dedication.
Walters himself was clearly delighted to see another young player progress into the 1st XI environment.
“One of the best things about captaining Hoddesdon is seeing players come through the club and earn opportunities,” said the skipper.
“Charlie deserves this completely. He’s worked incredibly hard, improved massively and everyone is genuinely pleased for him. He’s got a brilliant attitude and we’ve got full confidence in him. Hopefully he really enjoys the occasion.”
Standing in Hoddesdon’s way this weekend is a dangerous Luton Town & Indians side who have also made a strong start to the Championship Division season. Luton currently sit third in the table on 77 points after winning three of their opening four matches. Their campaign began with a thrilling one-wicket victory away at Shenley Village before a further win against Redbourn followed. Last weekend they strengthened their promotion credentials further with a 30-run victory over Dunstable Town. Their sole defeat this season was at home to Morth Mymms.
While their batting numbers are perhaps less explosive than Hoddesdon’s, their bowling attack has emerged as one of the strongest in the division so far. Sajjad Homyoon has been particularly outstanding. The Luton player currently tops the club wicket charts with a remarkable 24 wickets at an average of just 11.67, including best figures of 5/32. His consistency and ability to strike regularly with the new ball make him a major threat heading into Saturday’s fixture. Alongside him, Al Mahmud Hasan and Devansh Kumar Sharma have both collected nine wickets apiece, while Haroon Afridi’s economy rate of just 3.00 demonstrates the discipline within the Luton attack.
Walters is fully aware of the challenge awaiting his side.
“They’re clearly a very good bowling unit,” he admitted.
“You don’t take those kinds of wickets early in the season unless you’re doing something right. We know they’ll test us. But we back ourselves too. We’ve shown already this season that we can score heavily against strong attacks.”
Luton’s batting lineup also contains players capable of causing problems if Hoddesdon allow them momentum.
Abdul Wahid’s unbeaten 111 against Redbourn remains their standout innings of the season so far, while Umar Siddique Khan struck an excellent 90 in their opening-day victory at Shenley Village. The visitors arrive at Lowfield full of confidence and knowing victory would significantly tighten the top end of the Championship Division table.
For Hoddesdon, meanwhile, this fixture offers the perfect opportunity to reinforce their title credentials once again. Despite last weekend’s defeat, there is still a growing sense that this side possesses something special. The batting lineup looks formidable, the bowling attack contains variety and depth, young players are pushing through the system and crucially, the dressing room appears united and full of belief.
Saturday’s fixture also marks Hoddesdon’s return to Lowfield following two hugely entertaining away matches and a strong crowd is expected once again. With the football season now finished, cricket has fully taken centre stage at the ground and supporters have already been treated to some outstanding entertainment during the opening weeks of summer. If recent matches are anything to go by, another dramatic afternoon may well lie ahead. Two strong sides, plenty of form players, a top-of-the-table battle beginning to take shape and the debut of a young homegrown cricketer who has earned his opportunity the right way.
There is plenty to look forward to at Lowfield this Saturday afternoon.
