HEAT OF THE BATTLE
Hoddy Head Into Top-Of-The-Table Showdown
The mercury is set to soar, the outfield could resemble a frying pan by mid-afternoon, and two unbeaten sides will walk onto the field knowing that, even this early in the summer, Saturday’s clash at Sawbridgeworth already carries the feel of a significant occasion.
Hoddesdon CC 1st XI make the trip to Town Fields this weekend for a heavyweight Championship Division showdown against fellow pace-setters Sawbridgeworth, with both sides sitting proudly at the summit after taking maximum points from their opening two league fixtures. It is first versus second, top against second-top, two form sides and two ambitious clubs.
And if the forecast is to be believed, around 30 degrees of relentless heat to make things even more uncomfortable for whichever unfortunate team spends long periods in the field.
For Rob Walters and his Hoddesdon side, it represents another major examination of where this talented group truly sits in the early-season pecking order. So far, the signs have been extremely encouraging. Back-to-back victories over Redbourn and Dunstable have placed Hoddesdon firmly among the early front-runners, with Walters leading from the front both as captain and batsman. The skipper’s superb century in last weekend’s nerve-shredding one-wicket victory over Dunstable once again underlined his immense value to the side, even if — incredibly — it still was not enough to earn the club’s coveted Greene King Green Jacket award for Player of the Week across the senior sides.
That rather remarkable accolade went elsewhere within the club setup, which perhaps tells you plenty about the strength and performances currently flowing through Hoddesdon Cricket Club from top to bottom. Still, Walters’ form with the bat remains frighteningly good. And with temperatures expected to touch scorching levels this Saturday, Hoddesdon will hope their captain can once again make life deeply unpleasant for opposition bowlers.
The challenge awaiting them, however, is a serious one.
Sawbridgeworth have also opened the campaign in ruthless fashion, winning both of their opening matches and looking particularly dangerous on home soil. Last weekend’s five-wicket victory over Welwyn Garden City further strengthened the feeling that this may well be one of the strongest Sawbo sides in recent years. Leading the way for the hosts was danger man George Kenny, who ripped through Welwyn’s batting order with outstanding figures of 5 for 41 from his ten overs. Any batting unit that allows Kenny rhythm and momentum does so at its own peril.
Sawbridgeworth captain Matt Billings will undoubtedly once again throw the ball to his strike bowler and ask him to produce something special against Hoddesdon’s powerful line-up. And there is plenty of talent beyond Kenny too. Charlie Rudkin delivered an exceptionally economical spell of 10 overs, 5 maidens, 18 runs and a wicket last weekend, while Max Osborne’s tidy 1 for 24 from ten overs ensured Welwyn were never able to fully break free. Sawbridgeworth’s bowling attack looks disciplined, experienced and highly capable of exploiting any lapses in concentration — particularly if the pitch dries out under the blazing Hertfordshire sunshine.
The hosts also possess dangerous batting options.
Against Welwyn Garden City, Charlie Rudkin demonstrated admirable composure with an unbeaten 38, while Max Osborne accelerated brilliantly with 44 not out including three sixes as Sawbridgeworth chased successfully. Jack Plom contributed 35, while Rehman Ahmed earlier added 18 in a useful middle-order contribution. There is undoubtedly depth, experience and confidence running through ou hosts.
Yet perhaps the most recognisable name within local sporting circles is Sawbridgeworth wicketkeeper Charlie Mann.
Around non-league football, Mann has long been regarded as one of the area’s finest goalkeepers, starring for numerous clubs with consistently outstanding performances between the sticks. His reflexes, handling and calmness under pressure transfer effortlessly between football and cricket, making him a significant figure behind the stumps. He is also, unfortunately for Hoddesdon supporters hoping to dislike him this weekend, widely considered one of the nicest blokes in local sport. Still, all goodwill will temporarily disappear at midday on Saturday. As far as Hoddesdon are concerned, they will hope Mann is absolutely miserable by the time the evening rolls around.
Walters, meanwhile, has been handed the pleasant headache of difficult selection this week.
Strong availability throughout the club has created fierce competition for places, exactly the sort of situation captains and committees dream about during a long season. Training numbers have been excellent in recent weeks, with sessions packed full of players eager to impress and push for opportunities. Around the club there is a genuine buzz building — something that has been evident not just in results, but in standards, intensity and energy across all four senior sides. The 1st XI selected for Saturday reflects both the quality available and the balance Walters is striving to achieve.
The skipper himself leads the side, with Usmaan Shafi once again expected to provide aggression near the top of the order after his exciting 33 against Dunstable. Jamie Curtis brings invaluable experience with both bat and ball. The evergreen all-rounder remains one of the most dependable cricketers around and can always be trusted to contribute in big moments. Young James Mitchell Jr also earns his place in the XI and continues to generate huge excitement around the county. Widely regarded as one of Hertfordshire’s brightest young batting talents, Mitchell Jr possesses the sort of elegance and composure rarely seen in players of his age.
There will be many eyes on him this weekend.
Overseas star Himesh Ramanayake also features once again after another influential display last Saturday. His measured 58 against Dunstable proved crucial in stabilising Hoddesdon’s chase, while his bowling continues to offer control and wicket-taking threat. Todd Sturdy retains his place alongside wicketkeeper Will Steward, whose glovework has once again been sharp and reliable. Andrew Lewis, Harry Mason, Om Thakeria and Muhammad Hasan Ali complete a side packed with variety, youth and quality.
It is a team capable of posting large scores. It is also a team capable of taking wickets throughout an innings. And importantly, it is a team beginning to believe in itself. The current league table only heightens the sense of occasion. Hoddesdon and Sawbridgeworth both sit on 50 points after two games, clear at the top ahead of North Mymms. Hemel Hempstead Town, Welwyn Garden City and Preston already trail slightly, meaning Saturday offers a real opportunity for one side to land an early psychological blow in the promotion race. Nobody inside Hoddesdon will be getting carried away this early in the season, of course. There remains an enormous amount of cricket still to play. But winning away at a fellow unbeaten rival in extreme heat would send a serious message to the rest of the division. Walters knows exactly how difficult the task will be.
“Saturday will be a brilliant test for us,” said the Hoddesdon captain this week.
“Sawbridgeworth have started very well and you can see they’ve got quality throughout their side. George Kenny bowled exceptionally last weekend and we know they’ll be dangerous at home.”
“But the lads are in a really good place at the moment. Training has been excellent, competition for places is strong and everybody is pushing each other hard.”
“That’s exactly what you want as a captain.”
“The weather will make it tough for both teams and whoever handles those conditions best could have a big advantage. Hopefully we can keep building on what has been a really positive start.”
One suspects hydration levels may become almost as important as batting averages by Saturday afternoon. With temperatures expected to remain close to 30 degrees throughout much of the day, concentration, fitness and patience will all be tested severely. Long spells in the field could feel endless, bowlers will need rotating carefully, fielders will require constant energy and mentally, both teams will need to stay switched on. These are often the sort of matches where character matters just as much as talent. Fortunately for Hoddesdon, recent weeks have suggested they possess plenty of both. Saturday now offers the chance to prove it against one of the division’s other genuine early heavyweights.
