LOWFIELD AWAKENS AS HODDY RETURN HOME FOR DUNSTABLE CLASH

First team league cricket finally returns to Lowfield this Saturday as Hoddesdon CC 1st XI host Dunstable Town CC in the Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League Championship Division.

For Rob Walters and his side, it will be the first home league fixture of the 2026 campaign and the chance to build on last weekend’s hugely impressive opening-day victory away at Redbourn. There is already a feel-good atmosphere developing around the club after Hoddesdon’s outstanding 55-run triumph at Redbourn Common, a performance built on resilience, composure and genuine team spirit. Now attention turns to the challenge of backing that result up on home soil.

The game begins at midday on Saturday, with dry but cool conditions forecast at around 13 degrees centigrade—hardly Mediterranean cricket weather, but certainly ideal for a proper afternoon at Lowfield.

And there is another exciting addition waiting for supporters too.

For the very first time, Estrella Zero will officially be available on draught behind the Lowfield bar, giving members and supporters a fantastic alcohol-free option while still enjoying a pint in the sunshine. Combined with the return of league cricket to Lowfield, it promises to be another excellent Saturday afternoon at the club. As always, Lowfield365 members can enjoy up to 20% off rounds at the bar throughout the day, whether enjoying the cricket itself or simply taking advantage of one of the best social settings in local sport.

HODDY ARRIVE FULL OF CONFIDENCE

There is no question Hoddesdon head into the weekend with confidence flowing after last Saturday’s excellent performance away at Redbourn. At 10 for 2 early in the innings, the visitors looked in serious trouble. Yet Walters’ side showed exactly the kind of character required to compete at the top end of the Championship Division. A composed innings from the skipper himself steadied the ship before overseas man Himesh Ramanayake and young Andrew Lewis completely transformed the contest with a magnificent partnership. Ramanayake’s classy 60 continued his encouraging start to life at Hoddesdon, while Lewis announced himself in style with a mature unbeaten 59 under pressure. The lower order chipped in smartly, extras flowed from an increasingly ragged Redbourn attack, and suddenly Hoddesdon had battled their way to a highly competitive 232 for 8.

From there, the bowling unit took over.

Harry Mason produced a superb four-wicket spell, the seamers struck important early blows, and Redbourn were eventually dismissed for 177 as Hoddesdon secured maximum points to launch themselves straight to the top of the early league standings. While nobody inside the camp will get carried away after just one fixture, it was undeniably an ideal opening statement.

LOWFIELD RETURNS

Saturday also marks the long-awaited return of Championship cricket to Lowfield itself.

There is always something special about the first home fixture of the season for the 1st XI. After sharing the venue with Hoddesdon Town FC throughout the football campaign, the cricket club once again fully throws open its doors for the summer months. The outfield is looking superb, preparations around the ground have continued throughout the week, and there is genuine excitement about welcoming supporters back for league cricket. Lowfield has become one of the most enjoyable places to watch local cricket in Hertfordshire, whether sat pitchside in the sunshine or enjoying the atmosphere inside the clubhouse.

And with the forecast remaining dry, there should be another excellent crowd in attendance.

WALTERS LEADS A STRONG XI

Rob Walters once again captains a side that looks packed with balance and attacking quality.

The skipper features alongside Usmaan Shafi, whose aggressive intent at the top of the order can quickly put bowlers under pressure. Will Steward again takes the wicketkeeping gloves and remains a hugely important figure both behind the stumps and in the middle order.

The continued presence of Himesh Ramanayake is another enormous boost. The Sri Lankan overseas player has already shown glimpses of his class in the opening weeks of the season, contributing both with bat and ball, and supporters will be eager to see him make his first league appearance at Lowfield. Todd Sturdy adds further batting depth and intensity in the field, while youngsters Johnny Munday and Andrew Lewis continue to represent the club’s strong commitment to youth development. Lewis in particular will head into the game full of confidence after his match-saving innings last weekend.

Further down the order, Harry Mason, Muhammad Hasan Ali, Om Thakeria and Asif Mohammed give Hoddesdon an attack packed with variety, spin and control. On paper, it is a side capable of competing strongly against anybody in the division.

DUNSTABLE LOOK TO RESPOND

Visitors Dunstable Town arrive at Lowfield searching for their first win of the season after suffering a heavy 72-run defeat at home to Sawbridgeworth last Saturday. Dunstable were bowled out for 210 chasing 283 and will undoubtedly be desperate to respond quickly before the early-season table begins to take shape. Despite that defeat, Hoddesdon know there are still several dangerous players within the Dunstable ranks capable of influencing the game.

One man likely to attract particular attention is Nathaniel Cunnold, who claimed three wickets during last weekend’s defeat and looked one of the brighter performers in an otherwise difficult afternoon for Dunstable. If conditions assist seam movement early on, Cunnold could prove a genuine threat to Hoddesdon’s top order. Walters and company will therefore be wary of any complacency. Opening-day league results can often be misleading, and sides frequently improve dramatically from week one to week two as players settle into rhythm and conditions become more familiar.

THE KEY BATTLES

Saturday’s contest could ultimately come down to how well Hoddesdon handle Dunstable’s new-ball attack.

Last week’s early collapse at Redbourn showed that even strong batting line-ups can be exposed if they fail to settle quickly. Hoddesdon recovered magnificently on that occasion, but they will not want to continually place themselves under early pressure. If Walters and Shafi can provide a stronger platform this weekend, it would allow the middle order far greater freedom to attack later in the innings.

Equally fascinating will be the battle between Dunstable’s batters and Hoddesdon’s varied bowling unit. Harry Mason’s spell last weekend underlined once again how influential he can be in Championship cricket, while Ramanayake’s accuracy and Om Thakeria’s control provide Walters with several quality options.

Fielding could also prove crucial. Hoddesdon were excellent in the field at Redbourn, hunting in packs and maintaining intensity throughout the afternoon. Repeating those standards at Lowfield could be hugely important.

EARLY SEASON OPPORTUNITY

With several clubs already dropping points in the opening round, there is a real opportunity for sides to build early momentum. Hoddesdon currently sit top of the Championship Division standings alongside Sawbridgeworth and Welwyn Garden City, all on maximum points after one game. Of course, nobody wins titles in May. But equally, strong starts can lay important foundations for successful seasons. Victory on Saturday would immediately strengthen Hoddesdon’s position near the summit and continue the positive mood currently building around the club. More importantly, it would further reinforce belief within a side that already looks hungry, unified and capable of improving further.

SATURDAY AT LOWFIELD

So the stage is set.

League cricket is finally back at Lowfield. The sun may not be blazing, but the atmosphere should still be excellent, the bar will be fully open, Estrella Zero makes its draught debut, and Walters’ men will look to make it two wins from two against a dangerous Dunstable outfit determined to bounce back.

Whether you are there for the cricket, the social side, or simply to enjoy an afternoon at one of Hertfordshire’s best sporting venues, Saturday promises another excellent occasion at Lowfield.
