Arkinstall Turns Up the Heat In Defeat

On a sweltering Saturday at Lowfield, with the mercury surging past 30°C and the air thick with heat and hope, Hoddesdon’s First XI fell to a frustrating 75-run defeat at the hands of Preston CC in the HPCL Championship Division.

While the scorecard will show a fairly routine win for the visitors, the match was anything but straightforward, and the afternoon produced individual brilliance, bruising spells of bowling, and a searing century stand that tipped the balance away from the home side. For Hoddesdon, the undoubted silver lining was the stunning performance from Aussie all-rounder Oliver Arkinstall, whose 6-wicket haul earned him the coveted Green Jacket in a losing cause.

Toss Loss and the Burn Begins
Hoddesdon skipper Rob Walters lost the toss and Preston, keen to bat in the energy-sapping conditions, unsurprisingly elected to take first use of a dry, hard Lowfield track. What followed was a long, testing stint in the field for the Green Caps, made even more grueling by a Preston side determined to grind out every run on offer.

With the ball offering little early assistance, Hoddesdon had to work hard for their breakthroughs. It was Muhammad Hasan Ali who drew first blood, removing Edward Wharton for 30, caught by Clayton Stone. He followed it up by dismissing Philip Simpson, with Will Steward the safe hands. Preston were two down but far from rattled.

What came next was a lesson in attritional batting. Eden Scott and Jack Stevens combined for a crucial middle-order partnership, putting on over 100 runs between them. While Scott accumulated steadily (47 from 88), it was Stevens who stole the limelight with a 102-ball 81, peppering the boundary ropes with 11 fours and a six. Despite a few chances, Hoddesdon couldn't break the stand until Om Thakeria struck, having Scott caught by Walters to end the 4th-wicket stand.

Thakeria then got Archie McIntosh soon after, clean bowling the danger man for a brisk 29. But even as wickets began to fall more regularly, Stevens remained the key. Eventually, Arkinstall, who had been toiling through long spells, found his rhythm and the rewards came in a heap.

Arkinstall’s Aussie Assault
With the Preston lower order keen to push the tempo, Arkinstall ripped through the tail in a mesmerising spell of control. He claimed six wickets for 77 runs in 18.2 overs, removing Wiggington, Stevens, Daniel Plumb, William McIntosh, Jacob Williamson, and finally wrapping up the innings by removing Luke Marsden. In the oppressive heat, his ability to maintain accuracy and intensity stood out. It was a performance worthy of much more — and it rightly earned him the Green Jacket, Hoddesdon's highest weekly honour.

Preston finished their innings on 266 all out in 59.2 overs — a total that was neither out of reach nor entirely comfortable given the conditions.

In Reply: Walters Wages a Lone War
With the sun blazing and the pitch still firm, Hoddesdon needed a solid start. Instead, it was early trouble. Jamie Curtis (9) was the first to go, falling to a caught and bowled by oppo captain Edward Wharton. James Mitchell followed soon after, run out by Luke Marsden, and Oliver Arkinstall, perhaps still recovering from his marathon spell, was caught soon after.,

At 90-3, the chase was already wobbling. But Walters was standing tall. Driving, cutting, and swatting boundaries with authority, the captain led from the front with a brilliantly paced 90 from 98 balls, including 11 fours and 3 sixes. His partnership with Clayton Stone (29 from 59) was the backbone of Hoddesdon’s innings, adding 62 runs and injecting much-needed belief into the chase. But once Stone fell, edged to wicket keeper Scott off Marsden, the innings unraveled alarmingly.

Walters departed one run later, bowled by the same bowler, and the middle and lower order collapsed like a deck of sun-scorched cards.

Marsden Mops Up
Marsden, turning in a game-changing spell, finished with 5-45 from 17 overs, taking out Walters, Stone, Steward, Mason and Jones, as well as the smart run out of Mitchell to add to his impressive CV. It was a display of disciplined pace and smart changes of length — made all the more devastating by the fact that he kept breaking partnerships just as they started to build.

None of the remaining batters managed to stick around. Steward briefly flared with a six in his 9-ball 9, Rob Jones made 17, and there was little resistance beyond that. The final four wickets added just 38 runs. Hoddesdon were bowled out for 191 in 45.5 overs, falling short by 75 runs.

Heat, Hurt, and Hard Lessons
In truth, this was a game of missed opportunities. Despite the furnace-like conditions, Hoddesdon never looked completely out of it — but also never strung enough phases of dominance together to seize control. Preston’s top and middle order wore the bowlers down, and their bowling attack, led by Marsden and Wharton, was relentless.

The defeat means Hoddesdon are in 6th place in the Championship table on 157 points, just one behind Redbourn CC in 5th. Preston, buoyed by the result, remain 8th with 129 points, breathing new life into their campaign.

For the Green Machine, the fixture was a bitter pill to swallow, particularly after last week’s scintillating away win at Shenley Village. However, there were positives. Arkinstall’s heroics with the ball are fast becoming a reliable weapon in Hoddesdon’s arsenal, Walters’ form with the bat continues to shine and there is still time to turn the tide.

From the Dressing Room
Speaking after the game, Arkinstall remained philosophical:

It’s obviously a bit gutting to put in a performance like that and still come out second-best, but that’s cricket. They batted deep, and we let them get 30–40 more than we should have. We’ll bounce back — I’ve no doubt.

Skipper Walters, visibly exhausted after his innings, was equally pragmatic:

We fought hard in that heat. It’s a shame we couldn’t string enough partnerships around my knock and Clay’s. The bowling effort was gutsy, and Olly was unreal again — but we’ve got to keep 11 blokes in the contest for longer. There’s work to do.

Work to do, indeed. But this squad has never been shy of a little graft.
