Harry Mason produced a superb all-round performance to earn the coveted Greene King 'Level Head' Green Jacket this weekend, as Hoddesdon 1st XI stormed to a commanding 83-run away win over Reed in the Championship Division of the HPCL.
With temperatures high and pressure higher still, Mason stood tall with both bat and ball in a performance that oozed class, composure and cricketing intelligence. Coming in at a tricky stage of the innings, Harry guided Hoddesdon through the final stretch with a vital unbeaten 40 from just 51 deliveries. His innings, laced with seven boundaries, gave Hoddy’s total of 236/8 a competitive edge on a pitch offering assistance to both batters and bowlers but demanding real concentration.
Earlier in the innings, it was skipper Rob Walters who laid the foundations, crafting a patient and authoritative 97 from 129 balls, while James Mitchell added 36 in a crucial 77-run opening stand. Om Thakeria chipped in with a classy 32* at the death, but it was Mason’s clean hitting that gave the innings its final burst of energy.
Then came the real twist.
With the ball in hand, Mason’s spin was tight, clever and effective. He claimed two key wickets — including the dangerous Jack Tidey and Reed’s number 10 Matt Giblin — to puncture any late resistance. His final figures of 2.3 overs, 2 for 9 sealed the result and capped off a man-of-the-match showing.
Reed were bundled out for 153 in just 33.3 overs, despite a spirited 40 from Sean Tidey and 25 from Robert Lankester. Hoddesdon’s bowling unit shared the spoils, with Muhammad Hasan Ali (3-65) and Oliver Arkinstall (3-46) making significant inroads alongside Mason’s economical spell.
The result was all the sweeter for coming on the road.
Despite fierce competition across the club, including Rob Walters’ gritty 97 and Hasan Ali’s triple strike, it was Mason’s composed and multi-dimensional contribution that caught the eyes of the captain's and sealed the Greene King Green Jacket.
"Harry was absolutely class — calm under pressure with the bat and ruthless with the ball," said skipper Rob Walters. "Performances like that win you games... and jackets!"
He received the iconic jacket and a case of Level Head Session IPA back at the clubhouse — a deserved reward for a day in which he truly spun Hoddy to glory. The jacket was presented by legendary overseas player and Club Vice President Andy Cunningham.
Hoddesdon Cricket Club thanks Greene King for their ongoing support and invites all supporters to enjoy a pint of Level Head IPA—the perfect accompaniment to a winning weekend.
