Nick’s remarkable 50-year association with Hoddesdon Cricket Club began in 1972 when he and his older brother, Andrew, joined the club following their father, Reverend Percy Gandon’s declaration: “I am vicar of Hoddesdon, and you boys should play your cricket for Hoddesdon.” Over the years, Nick became a key figure at the club, serving as First XI captain, chairman for a decade, and most recently as club president.
A true club legend, Nick embodied the spirit of Hoddesdon Cricket Club, leaving behind an enduring legacy. His passion for the game extended far beyond Hoddesdon, as a driving force behind the Cricket Foundation at Lord’s, he played a pivotal role in creating and launching the Chance to Shine programme, which has transformed opportunities for young cricketers nationwide.
Beyond cricket, Nick was deeply committed to social causes. In 2013, he founded Aureus Social Ventures, an organisation dedicated to supporting charities including those helping London’s homeless. His influence also reached the heart of cricket’s most prestigious institution, where he had been a MCC member since 1992 and, in recent years, served on the MCC’s main committee.
Throughout his illness, Nick approached his battle with an astonishing amount of stoicism and positivity. Though he will be sorely missed, his legacy will endure.
The entire club extends its heartfelt condolences to Carole, Jo, and Amy during this difficult time.
