Hoddesdon Cricket Club’s James Mitchell produced an astonishing display of batting class this week, scoring 288 runs across two innings as Middlesex Pathway Under-18s defeated Essex Cricket Board Under-18s by 22 runs in the ECB Under-18 County Championship Group 3.

Played at Harefield, Kelvedon Road, Coggeshall Hamlet, from Tuesday 4 August through to Thursday 6 August, the match developed into a compelling, high-scoring contest filled with momentum swings. At the centre of almost everything Middlesex achieved was Mitchell, whose magnificent first-innings 134 was followed by an unbeaten 154 in the second.

Middlesex won the toss and elected to bat, but their opening innings was far from straightforward despite the eventual total of 349. Mitchell provided the stability, occupying the crease for 244 minutes and facing 189 deliveries during a superb innings containing 21 fours and two sixes. His patience and concentration allowed Middlesex to rebuild whenever Essex threatened to take control. Anay Maheshwari made 27, captain Pansilu Wijesinghe added a brisk 26, Rahul Rajkumar contributed 47 and Jamie Feldman scored 26, but Mitchell was the constant presence who carried the innings deep into its final stages.

The Hoddesdon youngster eventually became the sixth wicket to fall with the score on 273, having compiled a brilliant 134. By then, he had provided Middlesex with the platform required to move beyond 300, before useful lower-order contributions lifted the final total to an imposing 349 from 75.4 overs.

Mitchell's 1st Innings Was Sensational

Mitchell’s influence did not end when he left the crease. He also held three catches during Essex’s first innings, helping to dismiss Reuben Thain, Harrison McDonald and Jack Parrish as the home side were bowled out for 264 in 55.1 overs. Essex had threatened to reduce the deficit through Daniel Gladwell’s attacking 53, Jack Parrish’s determined 43 and Jack Auld’s 40. Middlesex continued to apply pressure, however, and secured an 85-run first-innings advantage that gave them an important measure of control.

With that lead established, Middlesex began their second innings knowing that quick runs could provide enough time to force a result. Mitchell responded by producing an innings different in tempo but every bit as impressive, transforming from the patient foundation of the first innings into the driving force behind a declaration. He reached 50 from 79 deliveries before accelerating dramatically as the innings progressed. Mitchell completed his second century of the game from 120 balls and then launched an extraordinary late assault, finishing unbeaten on 154 from exactly 154 deliveries when Middlesex declared on 240 for five after 47 overs.

His second innings included 20 fours and five sixes and demonstrated the full range of his game. Mitchell combined sound judgement and disciplined defence with controlled aggression, punishing loose deliveries and managing the match situation with remarkable composure. His innings enabled Middlesex to set Essex a demanding target of 326 while preserving enough time to pursue the ten wickets required for victory. It was a performance of considerable maturity from a young batter who appeared completely comfortable carrying the responsibility of shaping the match.

James Scored 154 From 154 Balls In The Second Innings

Across the two innings, Mitchell faced 343 deliveries and scored 288 runs while being dismissed only once. His aggregate included 41 fours and seven sixes, while he spent a combined 410 minutes at the crease during one of the finest individual performances produced by a Hoddesdon cricketer on the county pathway stage.

Essex responded bravely in the final innings and refused to allow Middlesex an easy conclusion. Reuben Thain made 72, Jonny Rumsby scored 67 and Daniel Gladwell contributed a rapid 45 as the home side remained in contention deep into the closing stages. Middlesex’s bowlers continued to find breakthroughs at crucial moments, with Arun Sureshkumar and K Mehta claiming four wickets apiece. Sureshkumar returned figures of 4-100 from 22 overs, while Mehta took an excellent 4-37 from 6.3 overs as Essex were finally dismissed for 303. The last wicket confirmed a dramatic 22-run victory and completed an unforgettable match for Mitchell. Middlesex collected 24 points from the result, while Essex earned seven, but it was Mitchell’s twin centuries that unquestionably defined the contest.

Hoddesdon Head of Cricket Louis Purves said the entire club had followed Mitchell’s progress with enormous pride. He described the performance as a landmark achievement for one of Lowfield’s most talented young cricketers.

What stands out is not only the number of runs but the way he made them. He showed patience, concentration and resilience in the first innings, before adapting brilliantly when Middlesex needed to move the game forward and create the opportunity for a declaration."

For Hoddesdon, the match provided further evidence of the exciting young talent developing within the club. Mitchell has already impressed in senior cricket at Lowfield, but scoring centuries in both innings of an ECB Under-18 Championship fixture represents another hugely significant step in his progression. The statistics are remarkable, although the circumstances make the achievement even more impressive. Mitchell batted for extended periods, adapted to changing match situations, contributed three catches in the field and then watched his teammates complete the job during a tense final-innings finish.

Middlesex’s victory will be remembered for its narrow margin and the determination required to secure it, but at Hoddesdon it will be remembered above all as James Mitchell’s match. Two innings, 288 runs, three catches and one outstanding victory combined to create a performance worthy of enormous celebration throughout the club.
