There was a little extra reason for everyone at Hoddesdon Cricket Club to celebrate Middlesex’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup triumph at Trent Bridge, with one of our own playing an important role behind the scenes.

Former Hoddesdon player and coach Rory Coutts, now Club Coach at Middlesex, was part of the coaching set-up that helped the county bring a 34-year wait for a List A trophy to an end with a 31-run victory over Leicestershire Foxes.

Middlesex prevailed in a tense, low-scoring final after posting 231 before bowling Leicestershire out for 200, completing a hugely significant victory for the club. It was their first success in a List A final since beating Derbyshire to win the Refuge Assurance Cup in 1992, making the achievement an especially memorable one for everybody involved at Middlesex.

Ryan Higgins was at the heart of the victory, producing a magnificent maiden List A century from 115 balls after Middlesex had found themselves in considerable trouble at 71 for five. He was superbly supported by Harry Duke, whose 55 helped the pair add a match-changing 135 for the sixth wicket and dragged their side towards a competitive total.
Leicestershire threatened to produce a comeback of their own through Nick Kelly, who struck an excellent 103 from 107 deliveries after the Foxes had themselves slipped to 79 for five. Middlesex held their nerve, however, with Tom Helm taking three wickets, Toby Roland-Jones returning figures of 3-27 and exciting 21-year-old seamer Naayva Sharma finishing with 3-37 to end the competition as its leading wicket-taker with 20.

Middlesex Ended A 34 Year Wait For Top Class Honours

For Hoddesdon supporters, though, there is another story within Middlesex’s success. Rory’s progression through the coaching structure at the county has been enormously impressive and is something that everybody associated with HCC can take genuine pride in.

Coutts initially joined Middlesex as one of the club’s Cricket Development Officers around a decade and a half ago and has steadily worked his way through the coaching ranks ever since. He became a hugely important figure within the Middlesex Youth and Academy programmes, helping oversee the development of talented young cricketers and providing the pathway that has enabled players to progress towards the professional game. That work remains clearly visible in the make-up of the Middlesex playing squad, with more than 70 per cent of the current professional group having developed through the club’s own system. Rory’s influence on that pathway, from Youth cricket through the Academy and ultimately into the senior ranks, has formed a significant part of his contribution to Middlesex over many years.

When appointed Middlesex Club Coach in 2022, Rory spoke warmly about both the opportunity and his long association with the county, saying: “I am grateful for the opportunity and excited to start in the role of Club Coach at Middlesex. This is a great Club and one that I have been lucky enough to be part of for the last 14 years.” He also paid tribute to those he had worked alongside throughout the Youth and Academy programme and spoke of his excitement about the challenges ahead.

Long before his coaching career was developing at county level, however, Coutts was producing some remarkable numbers in Hoddesdon colours. His record for the club underlines just what an outstanding cricketer he was during his time at Lowfield and why he remains so fondly remembered.

Across 108 recorded matches, Rory amassed an extraordinary 5,291 runs from 104 innings, being dismissed just 78 times and finishing with a phenomenal batting average of 67.83. His record included 20 centuries and 24 fifties, with a highest score of 175, while he struck 661 fours and 60 sixes along the way.

Some of the individual seasons are equally remarkable. In 2006 he scored 1,325 runs at an average of 63.10, registering five centuries and seven half-centuries, including that career-best 175 against Knebworth Park. Three years later he made 928 runs at 58.00, before following it with 897 at 74.75 in 2010.

Rory Posted Some Astounding Figures During His Time At Lowfield

Perhaps the most extraordinary campaign came in 2011, when Coutts accumulated 1,056 runs from just 16 innings at an average of 96.00. He scored six hundreds that summer, including an unbeaten 148 against Letchworth Garden City, while his other notable Hoddesdon innings included 146 not out against Knebworth Park, 145 against the same opposition and 133 against West Herts.

Those figures alone place Rory among the outstanding players to have represented Hoddesdon, but his contribution to the club extended beyond runs on a scoresheet. His cricketing knowledge and coaching ability were evident long before his career at Middlesex reached its current level, and seeing somebody with such strong connections to HCC enjoy success within the professional game is hugely rewarding for the club.

Hoddesdon CC Chairman Ian Munday commented "Seeing Rory achieve the success he so richly deserves, is brilliant. Many of us have fond memories of his time at Hoddesdon and he has always continued to support the club, even though his playing days are over. To say we are delighted for him and Middlesex is an understatment."

Middlesex’s One-Day Cup triumph represents another significant milestone in Rory’s journey from Lowfield to the county game. Everybody at Hoddesdon Cricket Club sends their warmest congratulations to Rory, the Middlesex players, coaches and staff on a fantastic achievement — and we are enormously proud to see a former Hoddesdon player and coach playing his part in bringing silverware back to Lord’s.
