Hoddesdon Cricket Club’s Greene King Level Head Green Jacket award has gone to Gagan Dissanayake this week after an excellent all-round contribution in the 1st XI’s draw away at Dunstable Town.

Gagan claimed three wickets and held two catches in a hard-fought Championship Division contest, making a decisive impact in the field as Hoddesdon battled to 11 points on the road. While the match itself finished drawn, his individual performance stood out across the club and earned him the weekly honour, which was presented back at Lowfield on Saturday evening by fellow Sri Lankan and Hoddesdon overseas star, Himesh Ramanayake.

This was a proper cricketer’s contribution. Gagan has already featured for both the 1st XI and 2nd XI since joining midway through the season, and Saturday felt like a significant step forward in his Hoddesdon journey.

The numbers tell a clear story. With Dunstable Town batting first, Gagan bowled 9.4 overs, including two maidens, and finished with figures of 3 for 47 as the home side were bowled out for 271 in 59.4 overs. He also took two catches in the field, completing a busy and influential afternoon during a game that demanded patience, energy and concentration throughout. In a timed cricket contest where momentum can shift gradually rather than dramatically, Gagan’s work helped Hoddesdon keep applying pressure. His wickets included the dangerous Jack Kilduff and Sam Cherry as well as tail ender Devan Thaker, while his catches also contributed to the dismissals of Owen Brown and Harry McBreaty.

Gagan Took Three Wickets

It was exactly the kind of performance that can sometimes get slightly lost in the broader scoreline. There was no explosive century, no dramatic final-over victory and no wild clubhouse chase to dominate the headlines. Instead, this was a rounded, disciplined and valuable display from a player who affected the game in several different ways.

That is why the Green Jacket exists. The award is about recognising the player who has made a standout contribution for Hoddesdon Cricket Club that weekend, whether that comes in victory, defeat or, as in this case, a draw.

Gagan’s start to life at Hoddesdon has already shown his versatility. He has been used across the 1st XI and 2nd XI, gradually building rhythm and familiarity. After a quiet beginning, his last two bowling displays suggest he is starting to find that rhythm at just the right time. The statistics show a player moving sharply in the right direction. Against North Enfield for the 2nd XI on 11 July, he delivered 10 overs, two maidens and conceded only 23 runs without taking a wicket. A week later, stepping into the 1st XI away at Dunstable, he turned that control into reward with 3 for 47 and two important catches.

That is the sort of progression coaches and captains love to see.

His batting opportunities have been limited so far, with only one recorded innings of eight for the 2nd XI, but Saturday’s Green Jacket was built around his bowling, fielding and growing confidence within the group. As he continues to settle, there is every chance Hoddesdon supporters will see more of his all-round game in the weeks ahead.

Himesh Ramanayake, who presented Gagan with the award in the clubhouse at Lowfield, was delighted to see him recognised.

“Gagan has fitted in really well,” said Himesh.

“It is not always easy coming into a new team halfway through a season, but he has worked hard, stayed positive and started to show everyone the quality he has. His bowling at Dunstable was excellent. He kept running in, kept asking questions and deserved his wickets. The two catches were important as well, so it was a complete performance in the field.”

Himesh also believes there is more to come from Gagan as he continues to settle into life at Hoddesdon.

“He is still getting into his rhythm, but you can already see his value,” he added.

“He gives captains options, he competes hard and he brings good energy to the team. I was very happy to present him with the Green Jacket because he fully deserved it.”

Club Chairman Ian Munday also praised Gagan’s performance and the way he has approached his first few weeks at Lowfield.

“It is always pleasing to see players make an impression, and Gagan certainly did that on Saturday,” said Munday.

“Three wickets and two catches in a 1st XI game is a serious contribution, especially away from home in a timed match where concentration and patience are so important. What I like is that he has been willing to play where needed, whether that is in the 1st XI or 2nd XI, and he is clearly working his way into the season. Performances like this are exactly why we are pleased to have him at Hoddesdon.”

Munday also highlighted the wider importance of celebrating individual performances even when the result is not a win.

“Of course, everyone wants victories, but cricket is full of days where you have to dig in, compete and take the positives,” he said.

“The Green Jacket gives us a chance to recognise those positives every week. Gagan gave us plenty to celebrate on Saturday, and I’m delighted for him.”

Gagan's three wickets helped prevent Dunstable from getting away completely, while his catching ensured Hoddesdon took chances when they came. For a side currently sitting sixth in the Championship Division table, every contribution matters. Hoddesdon have had a mixed run in the timed format after such an exciting early-season start, and building depth across the squad will be vital during the second half of the campaign.

Gagan’s Emergence Gives The Club Another Important Option

Back at Lowfield, the presentation was another reminder of the spirit behind the Greene King Level Head Green Jacket. Players gathered in the clubhouse after another long Saturday of cricket, with Himesh handing over the famous jacket to Gagan and congratulating him on a performance full of control, impact and promise.

The award has become a much-loved weekly tradition at Lowfield, giving the club a chance to celebrate outstanding individual performances from across the senior sides. Whether it is a match-winning hundred, a gritty captain’s knock, a five-wicket haul or a complete fielding display, the Green Jacket continues to shine a light on the players who make a difference.
