Local Author and Cricket Enthusiast David Rimmer Publishes Unique Collection of Published Letters

Former journalist and lifelong cricket lover David Rimmer, a well-known figure among the Hertfordshire cricket community and friend of Hoddesdon Cricket Club, has released his second book, A Man of Letters – a fascinating and often witty collection of letters published in both regional and national newspapers and magazines over many years.

Published by the Haileybury Society, this 90-page paperback showcases David’s distinctive voice as he tackles subjects ranging from politics and current affairs to sport – with cricket, of course, taking a prominent role. At just £9.95, plus £5 postage (or free local collection), it offers readers a highly readable, thoughtful, and entertaining glimpse into the issues that have sparked David’s interest – and ire – over the years.

With 85 selected letters grouped into 10 themed chapters, often supported by contextual commentary, A Man of Letters offers far more than just a record of what made it into print. It is a reflection of one man’s enduring engagement with the world, his passion for fair play both on and off the field, and his belief in the power of a well-crafted letter to make a point – or at the very least, to make people think.

David, who has lived in Hertfordshire for many years and remains an active supporter of local cricket, explained the motivation behind the project:

“The book covers politics, current affairs and general news – with cricket being the most covered topic under the sport umbrella. I could have included even more letters on cricket, but 11 seemed enough to strike a balance. In total, I’ve had more than 200 letters published, but to include them all would have made for an overly long book. I think the selection of 85, split into 10 chapters, gives readers a solid taste of the themes that have come up time and again.

From spirited letters on electoral reform and media bias to sharp takes on the evolution of test cricket and the importance of club cricket to local communities, A Man of Letters reflects both the diversity of topics that catch David’s interest and the consistency of his values: fairness, reason, and a deep affection for the written word.

Importantly, the book is a personal project for David – one he has part-funded himself.

It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while,” he says. “Over the years I’ve received a lot of kind comments from friends and fellow readers who’ve seen my letters in the press. I felt the time was right to gather them into a single volume. I hope people enjoy reading them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.

Preface is by the parliamentary sketch writer Quentin Letts and dedicated to David’s mentor Jack Thomas, Former HM of Allenby, Editor of the Haileyburian, and Head of English.

A Champion of the Written Word

David’s background in journalism shines through in the sharpness and clarity of his writing. But more than that, A Man of Letters reflects a lifetime of quiet activism – the kind that happens not through protests or platforms, but through reasoned arguments, passionate opinions, and a few well-placed words in the Letters to the Editor section.

In today’s digital world, where much of our public discourse plays out in social media snippets and anonymous comment threads, David’s collection stands as a reminder of the value of considered, signed correspondence – and of the power of words written not for likes, but for legacy.

Whether you’re a cricket lover, a politics buff, a news junkie, or simply someone who enjoys thoughtful writing with a personal touch, A Man of Letters is a delight – and a bargain at under ten pounds.

Support Local Voices

David’s contribution to local journalism and community life has been quiet but meaningful. His voice – articulate, informed, and never afraid to challenge – has made its mark across the pages of the Hertfordshire Mercury, The Guardian, The Times, and many others. Now, for the first time, readers can explore his thoughts in one beautifully presented volume.

We hope friends of Hoddesdon Cricket Club, any of his fellow Haileyburians, and all those who value community spirit and independent publishing will support David by picking up a copy.

So if you’ve ever nodded along with a letter in the newspaper and thought, “Whoever wrote that hit the nail on the head” – chances are, it might have been David Rimmer. Now’s your chance to read more from A Man of Lettersand perhaps be inspired to write a few of your own.
