Hoddesdon 2nd XI on top again WGC

Saturday 9th May saw hoddesson 2s opened up their campaign against Welwyn garden city 3s. After a productive winter nets, good turnout to training and a strong side on paper the feeling of coincidence oozed through the side.

Having lost the toss we were bowling first. Oli Maughan and Shaun Brown taking the new ball. Without any fireworks in the first 10 things were kept reasonably tight despite the presence of a few too many wides. Issad Airken then took the ball for his debut and despite a nervous start soon found his line length. The introduction of Harry Mason and Adam Sturdy to the attack really started to slow the run rate date with both bowling a tight line and frustrating the batsman. The frustration told when they took a quick single to Tyler Burroughs which they soon regretting when the direct hit sent the packing. The first innings followed a similar pattern throughout and despite a couple of decent innings from Welwyn, Hoddesson were always in control. Welwyn posted a target of 195 off of their 50 overs with shaun brown nabbing 3 wickets, with Harry and sturdy picking up 2 a piece.

The mood at the internal was of the belief that with a strong looking batting line up this was a very gettable score.

Innings started stuttering with the wickets of Tom Fryers, Nick Gandon and Phil Stafford leaving hoddesdon in a potentially sticky situation. This brought Tyler Burrows and Shaun Brown to the crease at 50-3. The plan was to continue the scoreboard ticking and put the bad ball away without taking too many risks. The plan was working although the presence of many 2s and 3s being ran the fitness of both batsmen was tested. The opposition were being ground down and both batsmen passed 50. The wicket of Brown left Burrows at the crease to smash hoddeson to victory to all corners of the ground.

A great first win of the season with hopefully many more to come.
