Having won its first six matches, Hoddesdon’s 1st team came unstuck away at Flitwick. Having batted decently on a sluggish wicket to score 238- 8 off 60 overs, Hoddesdon were let down by some less than distinguished bowling which allowed Flitwick to recover from 76-4 to overhaul Hoddesdon in the final over for the loss of only five wickets. Hoddesdon’s total was built around Rob Walters who batted with great discipline almost throughout to score 123 off 162 balls and Jayden Broodryk with 68 off 106 balls. However the middle order was unable to capitalise on a very solid start and while 238 was probably about par, a score of 270 seemed well in reach when Walters and Broodryk were batting together. Of the bowlers, Jamie Curtis, with 2-47 off 20 overs stood out but lacked the necessary support at the other end. On Saturday Hoddesdon play Shenley Village, who have enjoyed a good start to the season, and will hope to put a disappointing day in Bedfordshire behind them.
Elsewhere there was no shortage of drama. The 2nd team managed to tie a game which they were favourites to win when Letchworth, needing 11 off the final over, managed to scramble 10. Hoddesdon’s score of 207-7 owed much to Ashley Leat (41), George Blemkin (73) and Craig Handy (40), but at 156-1 a score way above 207 would have been expected. However, the total seemed more than adequate when Matt Stevenson and 16 year-old Matt Young reduced Letchworth to 24-4, whereupon the opposition rallied while losing wickets along the way. Matt Young finished with 6-30 off his 10 overs and won many plaudits.
Away at London Colney the 3rd team won by a single run when Alex Charles-Wall struck timber on the final ball when London Colney required 2 off the final ball. Rob Harcombe (68) and Rocco Cuffaro (42 not out) ensured a respectable 216-7 on a difficult wicket. It proved just enough!
The 4th team turned out to be reasonable comfortable winners against Reed and were grateful in particular to Terry Savanhu (3-6 off 6.3 overs) and Ollie Welsby (4-16 off 6) as Reed mustered only 104 in reply to Hoddesdon’s 161.
